This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV 3-row plug-in hybrid SUV. The Sorento PHEV has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. AWD is standard and it runs on regular gas. This PHEV gets 51 km/32 miles of EV range and 740 km/460 miles of range fully fueled. It has excellent fuel economy earning a combined city/highway rating of 2.9Le/100km, 79 MPGe. With the battery depleted it gets 6.4L/100km, 35 MPG city and 7.0L/100km, 33 MPG highway. The Sorento has a rugged looking exterior with a satin chrome grille and trim, LED headlights and taillights as well as LED fog lights, 19” wheels and a temporary spare tire. A panoramic sunroof is standard on the top two trims in Canada but comes standard on the SX trim in the US. A smart power liftgate is standard on all trims. The Sorento PHEV offers 6.8 inches of ground clearance and the towing capacity is 2,000 pounds. It comes with plenty of standard safety features including, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane follow assist, forward collision avoidance, front and rear parking sensors and 6 airbags. One thing you might notice in this PHEV compared to the gas model is the new shifter. The traditional shifter is gone and Kia moves to a dial shifter. The Telluride still has a traditional shifter, but I wonder if Kia will be moving all of their vehicles to this new shifter design. There are three trims to choose from in Canada and two in the US. You don’t really get a base model trim in the US, which is why the price point is quite high and more than the RAV4 Prime, Santa Fe PHEV and Outlander PHEV in the US. In Canada, the price is quite competitive. The base EX trim in Canada comes with plenty of standard features like an 8” touchscreen, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charger, smart power lift-gate, front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. It is priced at $44,995 CAD so you qualify for the $2,500 Federal rebate in Canada. Why $2,500 and not $5,000? It has to do with the battery size, if a vehicle has a 15 kWh battery or bigger, it’s get the $5,000 rebate, if smaller it’s $2,500. The RAV4 Prime has a 18.1 kWh battery and the new Outlander PHEV coming out next year has a 20 kWh. Both get the $5,000 rebate. The EX+ trim gets extra features like a 10.25” touchscreen, panoramic sunroof and heated second row seats. The top trim has the head-up display, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, a 12.3” digital driver display and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist detection. In the US, the SX trim for $44,990 comes with all the standard features we get in Canada, but also adds a panoramic sunroof, driver seat memory and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist detection.

I test-drove and LOVED this car, seemed perfect for a growing family. However, the dealer marking it up $10,000 USD once the negotiating began quickly ended the negotiating!

This is same reason I'm just looking at Hyundai and Kia. The highest dealer markup I've seen is $15K over MSRP. Total rip off.

@@joonp2408 As far as I know it's not. The current auto marketplace with the chip shortage and everything is having dealerships trying to make the most money per vehicle. Pure rip off. I have one dealership near me that will not sell cars above the MSRP. My issue they don't have the car I'm interested in buying. I'm waiting it out for as long as I can. It's crazy out there. We just acquired the 2022 Santa Fe Hybrid PHEV. A huge 5 seat cabin. We got lucky and it came in Luxury trim. With a 41 KM daily commute the 50 KM range is perfect. We received $4,000 in government rebates in BC. This works for Us on every level.

Great review! Really agree with Zack's comparison of PHEV range in relation to smartphones! Your new purchase is suddenly out of date the following year! One other question - whatever happened to "Night Life"?

So just picked up one of these in at after a lengthy evaluation of tha Rav4 Prime and the Kia Sorento SX Presitege PHEV. I life in California and the search for either vehicle was exhausting. Once I found and drove an available PHEV Sorento at a somewhat nearby dealer, I bought it instantly. Again, I had mostly had my eye on the Rav4 and was ready to pull the trigger if I had found one - glad now that I did not. The Sorento is nice and the drive is even nicer. Its much more car than the Rav4 Prime many ways. However, as a betting man, Id rather have Toyota's emblem on the car. This is my first Kia or Hyundai so ill be hoping for a reliable, well built vehicle that brings years of usefullness and as a car enthusiast, joy.

I loved the Austin Powers reference at the end lol I hadn't really considered a PHEV before, but since they have been around for a while now I may look at one for my next vehicle. The Tucson seems to be a reasonable value based on the numbers.

I feel like many comments misplace the marketplace for the Sorento. Those that want a second row need only look to the sister company and Santa Fe. Meawnhile I"m not trying to make a tweener vehicle like this fit three adults or even teens across. No, I'd want 4 adults and plenty of stuff in comfort (why hello captains chairs!). If I'm hauling an extra kid around I'm dropping a booster in the 3rd row and leaving the other seat down. Still enough cargo space. But any thought this, even with a second row, is a quality 5 adult/teen seater as a regular configuration is pushing expectation. The Toyota Highlander would be my choice today, but we've a Telly in the family too and they fill that bill as well, albeit with higher fuel burn. My point then is some are criticizing the car for being in the niche it was intended for, and/or not being it's sister. Hyundai/Kia has every one of those needs covered.

The Sante Fe PHEV is only sold in eleven "green" states in 2022. Don't know if that will change in 23.

Here in Korea, all trims of the Sorento have 5, 6 or 7 passenger options and that's the way it should be. Like you said, better for more kinds of families.

Sorento's interior appointment is easily chosen over the RAV4 Prime, except for the PHEV range. Since Sorento has always been the "tweeter" size of SUV, which smartly positioned between RAV4 and Highlander but with 7-seating, it has always been a smart choice for those who don't need 3rd row all the time.

Great review! While I’d still take the RAV4 Prime, it’s ridiculous for a 1-2year wait to get one! Toyota better speed up their production as Hyundai & Kia will beat them at this PHEV game! Not to mention, they have more PHEVs and EVs coming out than Toyota therefore more choices and options! Between Sorento, Santa Fe and aTucson PHEVs, I’m leaning more towards the Tucson PHEV due to slightly lower pricing and features!

@@andreaspencer9813 that’s a great choice IMO (by your mom). Did Hyundai say how long is the wait to get the Tucson PHEV? We might be in the market for a PHEV late next year as I’m still not sold on the EVs due to their expensive prices and limited range/range anxieties they create…

@@ztekz There's very good value in the Tucson PHEV. She feels the same way as you, not ready to go fully electric. The wait time is about 8 to 12 weeks.

@@ztekz Don't know your location but I am from the same city as the Motormouth couple (Vancouver Canada). At least here Toyota/Honda factory order should be 3 months according to local Toyota/Honda dealerships in Vancouver. I know some Toyota hybrid models take about 6 months (Like the Rav4 hybrid) but gas models should still be 3 months for Honda/Toyota factory orders if you order it through a local dealership in Vancouver. I still think the Hyundai/KIA vehicles are improving and they're getting better, but just making sure everyone's still informed of the real facts that Toyota and Honda factory orders don't actually take a year or two years of wait if you order it in the west coast of Canada where we're far out west from Ontario (Thats where many of the Toyota/Honda cars are being manufactured for us in Canada).

A good review as usual. I agree that a bench seat in the second row makes more sense, and a part of me wishes the battery size was a little bit larger but I think overall the car is still a great value, especially compared to other options. Curious about the supposed range on the new Outlander PHEV. 80 km would be impressive, but I can't get past the exterior looks or the CVT transmission.

There is no CVT. It is an electric motor attached to the engine that powers the wheels. My father in law has an Outlander PHEV.

@@kevinW826 I was referring to the upcoming 2023 Outlander PHEV. The standard model already uses a Jatco CVT, and there are rumors the PHEV might or might not do the same. I hope it doesn't, but that is only one half of my issue with the car, the other being it's not pleasing to look at.

Excellent review, folks. Here's a perspective from a current top trim 2018 Sorento owner in the US. Our current Sorento is our second. We also owned a 2012 comparable model. Obviously, we like the brand and the vehicle. It's my wife's daily driver and our family's long range "tripper." Each of our Sorentos has been completely trouble-free. Sadly, I have to say we won't be trading our current vehicle for any of the current Sorento models despite the more advanced tech and the more appealing looks. Here are the problems. We're a small family -- two adults, a 17 y/o daughter and a large dog. So one might assume that the third row seating in the Sorento is unimportant for us. That, however, isn't the case. Like most Sorento owners we rarely use the third row but when we need to carry six or seven passengers on a local jaunt it's a major plus compared to using two vehicles. And that need comes along frequently enough to make the 3rd row very convenient. Unfortunately, the only way to have seating for more than 4 humans or in our case 3 humans and "Fido" without deploying the 3rd row of seats is to opt for the very lowest trim of the Sorento with the non-turbo 4 cylinder gasoline engine. Neither gasoline models with the excellent 2.5L turbo engine nor either of the hybrid models has an available 2nd row bench seat. Since "Fido" doesn't fit in a captain chair, our only options would be to (a) deploy the third row on a permanent basis for the dog and lose almost all cargo space or (b) keep "Fido" in the more generous cargo space behind the second row where he shares the space with luggage, gear, or (more often) groceries. None of those options, especially the last, is acceptable. The bottom line is that the absence of a second row bench in either the gasoline turbo or hybrid models isn't just a problem for large families. Even our small family finds the new models of the Sorento far less appealing than our current vehicle. Unless and until KIA makes a second row bench seat available in their mid and upper trim Sorento models, it won't be on our shopping list.

@@madisonian50 Obviously that's KIA's perspective. But it's not ours. We love the size of the Sorento (189" long and 74.8" wide). That's about 7" shorter and 3.5" less in width than the Telluride. Likewise, the 2.5L turbo 4 in the Sorento provides similar performance and better fuel economy than the Telluride's V6 engine. The Telluride is a great vehicle but the Sorento is the perfect "Goldilocks" size for us. Further, the Sorento offers the options of a hybrid and PHEV that the Telluride lacks. If we were interested in trading our 2018 Sorento we'd probably give up the third row and opt for the Sorento's sibling, the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Great review as always. IMO not having the bench seat in the 2nd row isn't a big deal since the person sitting in the middle would be uncomfortable either way. If i was given the option to sit in the middle of a bench sit vs in the 3rd row by myself, i'd rather sit in the back. I can't remember the last time I or someone else sat in the middle of a bench seat.

Kia made a smart design decision. Rather than padding the stat sheets with a useless middle seat they made the 2 second row seats more comfortable and added 2 'ok' 3rd row seats in the same footprint as a Santa Fe

No, they made mistake. A bench seat folds down better without the gap in the middle. So, it’s makes for a more usable and flat load floor for cargo with the seats folded down. Plus, the middle position is the best/safest position for a single baby seat. A wide and soft fold down center armrest is more comfortable than the hard, thin armrests on captains chairs.

Too bad about the captain’ chairs. I’d rather have an option like the MDX where you can sit three in the mid row… and remove the centre if you want to have two captain chairs. I like the overall size of a mid size SUV, but so many of them have the captain chairs thing for the mid row… which is a hard pass for me as I’ll never use the third row seats for an extra passenger. :) Did this vehicle have mid row passenger climate controls? I’ll keep asking this :)

We drive a Sorento PHEV since September 2021. Awesome car! Here in Germany you get the third row only as an option and always bench seats in second row. This is far better in my opinion. Plus you get a Head Up Display (in the top-trim level "Platinum"), Memory Seats etc. MSRP is 64.000€ though (minus 6.000€ "tax-rebate", kind of). We payed 48.000€ for a 6 month old car with 3.900km direct from the dealer. Otherwise we would have had to wait for one year, to get a new Sorento... In Europe you pay much more for any car, than in Canada or the USA. To answer your question: You have controllable vents in the second row, but AC-temperature is controlled by the driver/passenger seat only. (2 zone AC) If you order a third row, you will get separate climate controls there. At least in Germany.

I would probably compare the Tuscan/Sportage PHEV against the Rav4 Prime. I wonder what the wait time is for the Korean PHEVs? Keep up the good work on these reviews!

Mercedes blutech hybrid would have been good tech here in US but never caught on. EVs are not the mainstream answer for long-term solutions. And I’ve had 2 Teslas. So I def too think affordable hybrids and PHEVs are a great solution to fill guzzler gap to more efficient driving for the masses. We have a $25K Maverick hybrid @ 47mpg avg. Much more financial sense than a $60K +++ EV

I’m really not a fan of the captain seats in the back row. Kia basically gave you a four seater car. Unless you have small children to stuff back there the third row is useless. Other than that I think this suv looks great though 👍

Hello, and thank you for the very well done review. A few hopefully easy questions 1) Can it manage 75mph on EV mode, and if sowhat kind of range do you expect at that power setting? 2) What did you experience re: cabin heat? Does is have anything like ceramic heating? 3) Any thoughts on what kind of MPG it might deliver on an extended trip (say 500 miles) at 75mph? Thanks!

@@davidzavala337 : Thanks. Sadly, the answers aren't good: 1) it can, sometimes, in no wind and on the flat. But it's a bit underpowered at doesn't use it EV capability all that well. 2) No aux heat. It runs the ice to satisfy all cabin heat requirements (really lame) 3) C&D's report shows it did not do well. 26mpge. It gets worse. The cruise doesn't offer a "standard" setting at all. They sure look good, and in warm weather are probably pretty decent, particularly around town. I'm waiting to see what 2023 brings for this and the new CR-V. At this moment if I had to buy it would be a highlander hybrid.

@@ronripley9197 rav4 prime is an over priced POS, you fanboys need to accept that fact. Hyundai and Kia have come further in 30 years than the japanese did. I can see them beating the japanese brands in 10-15 years. Will then end them probably not in the near future, the American, Chinese brands will fold first.

I find it so frustrating that Kia and other manufacturers assume folks want captains chairs in the second row, especially for a vehicle this size. As you point out, as the third row is cramped and suitable for kids only, so you cut the carrying capacity to four adults/older kids. That’s a big reason I chose the Santa Fe over the Sorrento, also the Santa Fe has a far better interior in my opinion. I get captains chairs for larger SUVs, but Kia have made a big mistake here, at least give us a choice of a bench seat for the 2nd row. BTW, 14:50, you reference the Tiguan in the retained value section…….

it is certainly odd no second row bench seat??that is puzzling...Kia and Hyundai really are keeping other manufacturers on their toes with the new vehicles and hybrids.Well said that we are all winners for that..cannot wait to see what is coming down the road next.

9:02 the last time I’ve checked, all trims under $55k qualify for the $5000. Trims over $55k will not qualify, like the Tesla Model Long Range AWD, for example. Unless there had been changes to the iZEV program?

I prefer firm seats since they hold up better under use. The latest premium models come with 14-way adjustment (driver) including lumbar support. I prefer the dial over the old-fashion shifter with the bag. I really like the light upholstery and color matched seat belts. A huge departure from basic depressing sea of black interiors. Although not kid friendly, in the lighter colors. I love the captain's chairs, and prefer them over the stodgy bench. Need a household outlet though. Not the 12v. One more thing, the seats = 4+2, not 6.

Regarding the person with the three kids, would you do a review of the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV for that audience? Not necessarily the top trim but a Limited has great features. Also, the Chrysler qualifies for the top ($7500) US tax credit.

Cars company should make the hybrid with a longer range on the electric mode, something like 70 or 80 miles. That will make the transition to electric easier and also more environment friendly.

Hey Guys, you point out the poor space behind the third row. But what if you don't need a third row and rarely a second row?. The Sorento has one of the largest amount of storage with the second and third rows folded at 75 cubic feet. More than Tucson with 66 and Santa Fe with 72 and Rav4 Prime with 65.

Outlander base trim does not start under 45K, so it might be only $2500 federal rebate not $5000 even though the battery is above 15 AH

You didn’t mention that unfortunately there’s no way to force this car to stay in electric-only until the battery runs out. That’s a huge shortcomings that I hope they change with the 2023 model which should be announced in the next couple months

I owned a RAV4 Prime and I recently test drove the Sorrento PHEV. The Sorrento has more overall room, a better interior, and much better tech. The standard options in the Sorrento are better, including the base radio. The base radio and infotainment in the RAV4 Prime is absolutely terrible…The RAV4 has more pep and overall HP, but the Sorrento is no slouch, AND, when the gas engine kicks in, it’s much quieter and smoother…Don’t exactly know the EV range of the Sorrento. I would get anywhere from mid 30s when I needed to crank the heat or A/C, to low 50s in ideal conditions (65-70 degrees out, no A/C or heat running) in the Prime. The base Prime gets cloth seats that I actually really liked, but the base Sorrento gets imitation leather that I liked better, but that’s a personal preference. For the price, I’d get the Sorrento over the Prime any day of the week. Only possible drawback are the captain’s chairs if you need to seat 3 in the back and don’t want to use the 3rd row…otherwise, a great car. The space behind the 3rd row is not a draw back. That’s what you get in this size vehicle…with the 3rd row down, you get a ton of room. If you really need a 3rd row a lot, you aren’t buying a Sorrento of any flavor. You’re getting a Telluride or a Carnival…of course you give up the PHEV part. If you really want a PHEV and the room, your best choice is the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, period.

I'm wondering if I could tow a 2,450-pound popup tent camper with 265 tongue weight (single axle with trailer brakes). I see lots of different numbers on tow capacity for the Sorento plug-in hybrid. Have heard it matters a lot if you use the OEM class II tow hitch from the factory attached at multiple points to the unibody frame vs a hitch just bolted to the bumper. I don't tow far, no more than about 100 miles each way max, but sometimes it is mountainous driving. I'm retired and patient. But I've heard that Turbo engines and automatic transmissions like 6-speed and up make a huge real difference in tow capacity. Also that payload matters a lot. That often you can exceed payload before you will exceed tow weight.

Residuals are set by the banks. Residual value for Sorento and Highlander is basically the same in the low to middle sixty percent range on a 12/36 according to Edmund's. There is lease cash on the Kia and some wiggle room off MSRP. Of course U.S. federal tax credit on the plug-in that is not available on the Toyota hybrids. Looks like Sorento is a battery deal not including longer warranty.

Just a tiny correction: Banks USE residual values if/when they get into leasing, and resale values on financing. I've never known a bank to SET either. Most use Nada for resale and ALG for lease information (if they are big enough to get into leasing. Frankly, I've only seen that in credit unions, but I'm assuming you were using a generic "bank" statement). Regardless banks don't set such rates. In fact, they'd likely get in trouble (at least here in the US) if they did. US lending institutions are tightly governed and monitored. A loan/lease etc. should be not only be driven by an independent value assessment, but it's frowned upon to be hopping around from source to source. Auditors don't like it and a US financial institution would get in hot water pretty quickly. Interest/money factor? That they can do pretty much whatever they want, but they then have to do it consistently across the customer base. Mind you I'm in the US, perhaps you're not.

The biggest bang for the buck is self charging hybrid. Much cheaper to buy and no need to constantly plug and unplug which is very annoying. Then there is the cost of a home charger.

But you get almost no real benefit, Toyota Hybrid does nothing after 80km/hr. PHEV can get 90% of people to and from work on 0 gas. With the ever growing charging stations, you can charge it anywhere and take advantage of having an electric car for your everyday use but have the freedom of gas when you have longer than normal trips.

I thought the second seat does come with an option of bench seat? Kia website claims its 7 seater. I wish I can attach the screenshot from the website but this below is from website. 7-PASSENGER SEATING CONFIGURATION Comfort for every row.
