Bike Bros

Күн бұрын

This was originally filmed in 2021. Since then, prices have increased but the bikes have remained the same. Marin does this with many models: carrying them over for 2 years.
See details of each model at:
www.bikebros.c...
www.bikebros.c...
We look at and talk about the differences between these two 27.5" wheel hardtail mountain bikes. These two bikes share the same frame but have different Shimano Deore drivetrains (11 speed and 12 speed), different dropper posts, different Shimano disc brake models, different tires (vee tire or maxxis), and different Rock Shox suspension forks (Recon and Revelation).
So who does each model suit? Why spend the extra money or why choose to save a few dollars.
This is a comparison and review from Bike Bros., a Cochrane, Alberta, Canada bicycle shop.

I have the 2020 sq2 and personally I loved all the colours of the sanquentins in 2020 a lot more than 2021, and it’s had quite a change in spec. Mine had sram nx whereas the 2021 has shimano deore, and the 2020 comes with tektro brakes which are awful. I’ve put a brand X dropper on mine and I’m saving up for some shimano slx 4 piston brakes

How different does the XL size feel compared to the large? I'm wondering cause I feel I'm in between the two sizes being around 6 feet tall, and I'm getting a mix of recommendations from different shops. I don't want to feel that the bike is too small or too big for me, but I do tend to lean towards a more nimble bike. Normally I'd try them both in the shop, but with the shortages, that's nearly impossible to accomplish nowadays. What would you say separates them in terms of ride feel to the best of your knowledge?

I think they're both great options and you're sort of trading lighter weight (Fathom) for a bit more toughness on the Marin. This year, with the shortage of bikes, if you're lucky enough to find either then you're pretty lucky and I'd be surprised if you had a moment where both were available at the same time from your local store.

@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 3 жыл бұрын
The ones we checked seemed to be taped and ready for Tubeless. That said, we are seeing some inconsistencies with specifications as the factory will change details depending on outsourced parts availability. Typically Tubeless compatible tape has a shiny smooth appearance, non Tubeless has some texture and a satin finish.

@@BikeBrosBikeShop thank you for replying :) I have a last question hopefully you can answer, putting back the rear wheel is a pain in the *ss (axle not screwing to the other side) the trick seems to be derailleur hanger, It has some play, should i tighten it until no play or loosen it until axle can screw all the way to the other side?
@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 3 жыл бұрын
@@danyAlva11 Hi, we've seen this sort of issue on bikes from a few brands. Loosening the hanger could allow it to align with the thread's better to get the axle in easier. Just make sure you tighten the hanger after. I'd make sure there is some grease on the thread too. If this is the case, test if the axle is hard to remove with the hanger tightened - if it is, loosen the hanger before loosening. I'm guessing this could be extra thick paint somewhere that mis-aligns the threads at the last part of tightening.

San Quentin 1 is a great bike for what it costs... it just isn't as refined or as tough as the SQ2, just like the SQ3 is even more refined and more capable. SQ1 still has the same great handling characteristics, just won't hold up quite as well under harsher use.

I'd go with the SQ 3 or RZ 3 if you can afford it. Quality of suspension and drivetrain is worth it and especially suspension as it is so expensive to buy after market. Whether you go SQ or RZ is very personal. I love having a hardtail as a second bike for when the mood hits but prefer a full suspension bike as my main bike for comfort and being able to do some drops more easily. If find my wrists and lower back get sore more quickly on a hardtail.

Great video, I have recently booked a sq-3. Here on KZfaq, your video is probably the most detailed video regarding the San Quentins. One thing that I don’t understand is that the specs specifically mention “suspension lockout” in specs of the San Quentin 1 on the official website, but San Quentin 3 specs don’t have “suspension lockout” mentioned anywhere on the official website. Does this mean that only the San Quentin 1 has a lockout feature or do all the San Quentins have a lockout feature? PS: I am new to mountain biking, in case you are wondering Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards,
@BikeBrosBikeShop

I think it is mentioned on the SQ1 because at that price it is considered a feature. As the prices increase, a fork lockout is basically expected so they don't bother mentioning

It's a travesty that they put wired bead tires on San Quentin 2. I mean, if you are paying 1.5k on a bike, tubeless tires are a must! Even a cheap Kenda tire will be better tubeless!

I wouldn't call it a travesty. At this level of bike we find very few customers are concerned about Tubeless tires.
