A review of my 2021/2022 Marin San Quentin 2. I have been riding this bike for a few months now on a variety of terrain and want to share some of what the experience has been like.
.
I started riding in 2007 on a Giant STP that replaced my Huffy. I put down the bike in 2009, and bought a Giant Stance in 2017 which I rode for around 7 months before it too took a backseat to life. I sold the Stance in May to fund it's replacement, the Marin San Quentin 2.

Modified to suit my needs or replace what I've broken thanks mostly to @mtbdirect :
- Bontrager XR4, 27.5x2.6
- Shimano SLX rotors, 203/180mm
- Rockshox mudguard
- Spank Spike bars 800m/50mm
- ODI SDG grips
- Dyedbro Viking frame protection
- FUNN Zippa bash guard
- OneUp composite pedals
- Bontrager Arvada saddle
- DaBomb UFO rear hub
- Tannus insert in the rear
- Fidlock bottle and latch
.
All other specs you can find at @bicyclesonline.com.au

What is my favourite upgrade? My @caribee_australia hydropack 100%. Crash landed on it, didn't split, and can ride souch further with water on board 👌👌

46-year-old mom here who is just now getting into mountain biking thanks to my 12-year-old kid. This review, along with the other YT reviews of the SQ2, helped convince me that this bike was absolutely NOT what I needed for my 1st beginner bike but that I also absolutely MUST buy it! I rode my second trail yesterday, and your review is spot on. My front tire popped up on an incline because I'm not getting enough weight over the front, and I had to laugh because it was just like your video. And thanks to your video, I wasn't caught off guard by it and so was able to handle it well when it happened. Thank you! The stock tires are, indeed, heavy and slow. I'm looking forward to upgrading those when these wear out (I'm cheap). One thing I heard in all the reviews is that this bike is fun, and I definitely agree with that. Even though I'm still riding in slow chicken-mode, I'm having a blast on this thing whenever we head downhill! Thanks for inspiring this lil' ol' lady to buy this bike!!!

Back in the 90s we ran 100mm +/- stems and bar-ends to get our weight far over the front for steep climbs. Especially out of the saddle climbing. It won't work well with today's wide bars so narrow bars are a must. Narrower bars will help give back most, if not all of the upright riding position lost due to a longer stem. I've done this to my Marin Rift Zone. Now there's no problem climbing seated or standing. I love climbing. It's cool you do as well 😎

I got mine last week! Your insights matched up with my experience. The tires are slow! Hardtail Party knows his sh#t… I ordered a set of carbon bars with more rise, a bash guard, and a new kit… pads, helmet, etc. I plan on changing the tires to something faster rolling in the spring (and maybe another wheelset to go with them…) Overall I’m happy and I think it’s a great value! Oh and I still laugh whenever I ride it because of this video… teach me how to ride this thing! I’m old and can’t wheelie or manual to save my life! I gotta get that down before I crash the bigger rides here in California! 😂

Great Honest Review Ordered a Marin SQ3 2022 two days ago I was in between the Mmmbop frame build and Marin SQ3 and was able to get a good discount on the Sq3 . Started out on a 2012 Giant Talon 26er 9speed and had tons of fun without having a dropper and fancy components. I can imagine the SQ3 will be mega fun and a huge upgrade for me. I also agree that all this rear compliance talk gets to much that it makes an ordinary rider feel lost in choosing a bike as many won't even notice a change in material,groupset, frame compliance.
@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Can't beat a good deal ;) Yep I'm right with you there - compliance, 5mm stack difference, etc. I tell myself "What, you really think YOU are going to be held back by the bike and not the other way around?!?" I started on a 2008 Giant STP2 and it is definely a new time in bikes ;)

Nice review, I found the stack a bit low when I got mine (I'm 6ft and bought a L) but have changed to 50mm stem and 50mm riser bars with 800mm width and it made things much more comfortable. I like the way mine climbs but then again my previous MTB was a mid 2000's GT Avalanche. This feels a lot more capable out on the trails. I like to try an XL one day and see how that would compare.
@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
I’d like to try an XL too, my previous bike was also from a different generation and a bit small so I’m feeling you 😂 I didn’t spend enough time on the original bar to really know the difference, I’ll flick the spacers around some time to test it out but I really do notice that steeper climbs has the front wheel itching to get off the ground

@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
Glad it was useful :) I've never ridden Chesters, but I can see they are slightly convexed in their profile like the OneUps. Concaved pedals hurt when you wear the wrong shoes, which if you ever just go for a quick pedal down the street is a bit annoying like my old Giant pedals. I've not slipped a pedal to my shin with these yet, so I'm ultimately very happy with them. I would give the same opinion as I did with my bike - OneUp is good but so are many other pedals. I do like the convex shape more than I thought, dead flat is also ok. I'd recommend you buy what's in stock, in the colour you want (black PLS ;P), and any pedal that isn't reverse engineered like a Fooker.. cause F any company that straight up steals.

He hated the low stack - heard him mention that a lot but rest of the bike I don't think he's ever touched on. I can't wait for his review either! When I bent the standard handlebars I got larger risers to combat this. He had two Ragleys and lived them out of the box, also had two Marins on but needed to modify both to get comfortable. Are you sur eyou got the right size? Also a thing you did not mention is the chain stay remains the same size on all sizes, resulting in a different balance point,if t chain stay is too short the bike will loop out easier, but if you went for a too small bike, it too will contribute to it. But the slack head angle helps to geep weight to the front, with the front wheel being so far to the front, but mabye you need the next size up, that would make the front be even further away, and you would get more room, but thst might be too big, I have saddle quite far forward mine has tip aligned with the BB, but that will depend on the saddle you have, but I also UD emid foot position, so I sit further to the front, so thst kind of makes the bike smaller, I see you don't, but if you are used to old style fit then you might sit too far back, and in the climbs you stand and bike might be too small resulting it looping easier. I am not saying this is the case just some knfo on ehat it might be higher riser bar was a good idea, some don't need as high bar but if you need it use it. But keep in mind you might have the stem too high reducing the effective reach, so if you lower the stem you get more effective reack, and more room, but then ba ris lower, but you can get an even higher riser bar to get the same high, while having bit more weight to the front on the climbs.
@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
I fit a large but also an XL too, I'd love to try an XL as I think it might suit me. Yeah these have short stays but there are so many numbers there's no point parroting all of them 😂 my next bike I will size up and see if it fits me better. I'll drop the stem after a while to simulate a lower Bar height and see how that feels, it's all a learning process still for me as it's only my third proper bike 👌 but they've changed so much since when I started riding in 2007 that it's basically my first proper bike 🤣 Thanks for the info! I hope others watching the video can read it and get something out of it 👍👍

I hate stanz tubeless cuz of the amount of cleaning and sidewall junk it creates. I’m going to try that orange stuff hardtail party uses. I’ve pinched flat like one time in my life. I can take a shit and loose the added weight of tubes. Only thing I don’t like about tubes is they seem more bouncy feeling to me and tire is harder to keep true looks like bent rim sometime in the rear compared to tubeless who cares. Good job buddy

Yeah I’ve really enjoyed it on the XC loops we have and it’s felt great. As far as the riding I’ve done it’s probably been a 25-35-40 split between enduro, gravel fire roads (big climbs, big descents) and our local XC trails. I’m 6”, 130kg and fat as fuck 👌 Really steep climbs the front end tends to become light is the most noteable thing that is different to an xc bike. If you are doing any forestry type roads, such as long climbs then fast descents then it really shines due to the slack and long nature - probably where it feels most in it’s absolute element !!

Did you check out the Merida Big Trail?
@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it was on the list, along with about every bike in the category haha. There were 2 factors that kept me off one. 1. Lockdowns, we were pretty deep in them where I am in Australia so we couldn't travel around much i.e. couldn't go to Sydney where 99bikes is located (they stock Merida) 2. I didn't want 29er wheels. Now, this was the reason It didn't make the final cut of bikes, but it's dumb reasoning, and I know I made a bad call on this one. I don't regret the SQ but it was a silly, backwards idea to exclude the bike based on that alone!. You should consider one absolutely. The SQ isn't miles better than other bikes, these days I would just get what you can that's in stock and in the tight bike genre you want. :)

@@forzer456 I was close to choosing the SQ1 which is cheaper, I'd prefer a 9spd over 11spd too but I'm a very heavy guy so opted for the 12x148 rear end. Yeah the fork feels amazing - but be aware I'm comparing it to my last two forks that were a Marzocchi DJ4 and a Rockshox 30 - so this is the burliest and longest travel fork I've ridden. Part of me thought 'i had no issue with my Rockshox 30, I'm not good enough to benefit from an expensive fork anyway'. As far as 130mm travel, it's perfect. Bottomed it out only once harshly (the drop to flat in the video haha) but I never feel I need more. Steve from Hardtail Party has talked about 130mm being a real sweet spot for his favourite length fork - and has way more experience than I do. He just hasn't had the chance to do a SQ yet. What would make this bike nicer is 50mm travel in the rear end... No longer a hardtail ;) I'll be doing a video on that in a few months when the silly season passes!!

I'm 6ft and I went with a large. Its the first bike I've had that was correctly my size as I've undersized my last bikes. I'd love to try out an XL, I got used to this 'big long' bike in a few moments which made me wonder if I should have sized up given the lack of 'learning curve'. My next bike will be an XL so I can learn to find what reach I find suits me. It might be too big but I won't know till i try one.

I had to subscribe, I’m an idiot on a bike, and an older one at that... I’m looking for a hardtail to replace my Banshee Scirocco. Oh, never getting rid of it, just want something with the newer modern geometry to move my motor to. Can’t find a new fork for the Banshee, of corse it’s a straight 1 1/8. Actually I like the geo the way it is with the 24” x 2.8” rear tire. The only stopping me now is there’s no affordable IGH that accepts a rear thru axel. Anybody got any pull with Sturmey Archer ??

I still ride my Giant STP around and it’s a blast. It’s set up single speed on 26” and I’ve put faster times in on different sections of trail than the SQ as I’m having to push it hard to keep on top of cadence 😅

I’m considering either a San Quentin or A Scout. Fuck. I’ll have to go back to work. My dad did it at 70. And guess what. He was a teachers helper. I’d hear hear him muttering, “ those little bastards” And what do they need now ? Subs without credentials.....that would be so weird, it’s almost eerie...lucky to get a decent frame and fork for a grand.

I see you have a Sunrace cassette, they are really bad at retaining the chain in place when back pedalling, but a smaller chain ring will fix it, but I had issues with these cassettes, the cogs and teeth bend, thete are were sharp wear marks I had to sand down. Awful performance. Mabye the chain line is bad causing the chain to drop when back pedalling, a chain ring with a different offset will solve that as
@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's obviously out a long way with it on the big cog. I'd think it's down the the cassette that allows it to fall back, BUT this is my first 1x driveline so not sure if it's a normal. I'll be trying out a Deore cassette once this wears out and a new chain too once this wears down so will see how things go 👍

@@idiotonbike The Deore m6100 cassette outperforms it shifting wise too, much smoother shifting, but Shimano cassettes have always kept the chain on better than the sunrace, it was the case with xt m8000 vs sunrace 11-46t on 34t chain ring, but sunrace dropped, but 32t chain ring and it did not drop, then I kept 32t cus thst was the chain ring size that suited my riding, but I needed laughter climbing gear so k went for big cassette, 11-50t Sunrace, but it performed badly, with the same issues as begore, just a different and much better bike, but then I got a Deore M5100 11-51T which I tried for few rides, no bent cogs, teeth or sharp edges, but I only used it for a few rides, cus the Garbaruk 11-50t arrived. That cassette is more than half of the weight, no issues, but pricy, more than 3 times the cost but cheaper than prociest Shimano and Sram, and lighter too. So I am sstesfied. I have a Deore m6100 sgs Rd, Archer D1xTrail electronic shifting system, which fits me well, regular shifters don't, I've not tried Shimano 12 speed shifter yet but I know Sram, and 11 speed Shimano don't fit me, so I sold my Shimano shifters. I have issues with my thumb misaligninh during shifts which can be painful, also mechanical shifting is really fatiguing on long rides especially with clutch enabled on rear derailleur. So this system solves these issues, no i can shift painlessly, and never fatigue, as I only press who light buttons.

@idiotonbike
@idiotonbike 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never ridden one, but have heard they are a tad harsh, but so is this SQ 😂 About every bike is good, but if I was after a bike with that much travel I’d go to a Ragley Mmmbop as it similar in spec with a dropper post already installed at the same price. You can throw on a 200mm rotor up front while you swap for metal pads ;) @hardtailparty has reviewed the Mmmbop, go check that out before buying. I think he has reviewed the Meta too ~ ?

I have a Meta ht 2021 27.5. I had a 2020 san quentin 2 two bikes before (I went from full suss to hardtail SQ2, to full suss then to the Meta 😅). Very similar. Honestly I can't tell much difference. Chainstay is a little longer, more travel but still feels just as playful as the SQ2 did. Might be a tad more stable.

yes, the SQ is slow as f**kkkk jajaja there is no way to put "pedalling efficiency" and San Quentin 27.5 plus in one sentence, the bike doesnt help you to mantain speed, but downhill you will have tons of fun, also you can increase tire size to 2.8 (as maxxis rekon plus) and install a decent 4 piston brakes like shimano SLX with metal pads

Yeah I never rode those original tyres 😂😂 these Bontragers i thought were doing well until I rode my slicked out STP and realised it wasn’t 😅 I tried to ride it stock , bar tyres, and replace or upgrade as necessary but I did need to get onto the brakes to get a bit more from them.
