This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Nissan Rogue compact SUV with an all-new 3-cylinder turbo engine. What’s new for this year? The Rogue gets a new engine, a 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder with 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. The CVT has also been updated, it’s more refined with 17% wider gear ratio coverage and 32% lower friction than the previous transmission, which helps with acceleration and fuel economy. Standard AWD in Canada and in the US both FWD and AWD options are available. The previous Rogue’s 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque is standard on the base trim in Canada and comes with a FWD and AWD option. In the US, this base engine is no longer available and all other trims in Canada come with the new engine. The Rogue now offers best in class fuel economy. The turbocharged 3-cyliner gets 8.4L/100km, 28 MPG in the city and 6.7L/100km, 35 MPG on the highway. The Rogue and Forester offer the most front row legroom in this class at 43.4” of space. The Rogue offers excellent second row legroom but it’s not best in class, competitors like the CRV, Tucson and Forester all offer more. There’s sufficient amount of space for our carry-on and a cooler, keeping up well with the competition for overall cargo capacity and space behind the second row. The Rogue has a unique feature, a Divide-N-Hide cargo system to give you multiple options to store your items; this is standard on the SL trim. This family-focused SUV has wider doors that open nearly 90 degrees to make it easier to get car seats in and out of the vehicle. It comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, available 9”, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, available wireless Apple Carplay, cloth seats with available leatherette and leather on higher trims. Other available features include a 12.3” digital driver display, wireless charger, heated rear seats, a Bose sound system, ProPilot Assist with Navi-link, a hands-free power tailgate and a panoramic sunroof.
In Canada, the Nissan Rogue base engine starts $29,148 CAD for FWD and $31,448 CAD for AWD. The Nissan Rogue turbocharged engine starts at $26,850 USD (FWD), $28,350 USD (AWD), SV AWD $35,748 CAD/$30,040 USD, SV Premium $37,748 CAD, SL AWD $40,148 CAD/$34,700 USD and Platinum AWD $42,398 CAD/$38,130 USD.

I just bought a 2023 platinum. I wasn’t even going to consider a Rogue and decided to pop in to see one as the dealer was on my route home. Nissan has substantially upped their game with this one. I was down to a Tiguan, CX-50 or this. Rav was out as I had a rental and it was probably the worst thing I’ve ever driven, CRV seems blah, Hyundai/Kia annoying interiors turned me off. That said , it’s hard to make a wrong choice in this segment but the Rogue feels like a luxury suv compared to the rest. The interior is top notch, and usable, it’s super quiet and comfy too. The CX-50 would run circles around it but that’s at the expense of comfort. The Tiguan was a nice all rounder but seemed forgettable.

Just got my 2022 2 weeks ago. No one can believe it's a Nissan. The numbers don't describe the feeling. I am a car guy and have been all my life. This is the perfect balance of power luxury and cost. Takes regular gas as well. Everyone who has been in it is impressed. I tried mazday, honda and even acura. I knew right away it was the one for me and I have never owned one before. So much room as well.

I also have this new 22 with the 1.5 turbo. I think it is noisier than it should be when the turbo kicks in (for passing or accelerating). I'm also hearing a strange "whirring" noise from the engine bay. Actually louder upon decelerating, most noticeable around 45-50 mph. I drive all the time in STANDARD, as I want good mileage, don't need my Rogue to be a damn sports car and hold revs. Will be taking this into the dealership about the whirring noise, anyone else have the 22 model with the new engine with any wierd whinning noise from the engine bay (been told may be the CVT chain belt or the Alternator Clutch overrunning making the whirring noise I hear) ?

Another best in class video production. Engineering technology has always fascinated me. The engine in this vehicle will be good for a wide range of applications if the design and manufacturing has been thoroughly tested. Their previous cvt's have cost them dearly and they cannot risk this engine going in the same direction. A credit to Nissan for changing their shortcomings and supporting customer complaints. I hope they do well.

This new 1.5 VC Turbo could perhaps be the perfect engine for the Nissan Sentra, and hopefully with a AWD option, surely challenging Civic and Corolla ! With high gas prices for the next while, it would likely be a smart move from NIssan ...

So I drove this car yesterday, and let me just tell you, they need to 100% double down on this engine. It's better than any of the offerings in the rav4(none hybrid) or CRV, obviously some of the larger upgraded engines pull harder but for the mix of power and fuel efficiency this engine is incredible. Their smaller cars are in need of access to this engine, I could 100% see the sentry using this exact same gine and being a legit SI killer if maybe even a wrx competitor. Now transmission is the real question, and from my understanding this has become a better upgraded CVT, now of course id want a stepped automatic or a manual in something like the sentra but I'd aslo rather get a sentra period with this engine even with the CVT rather than not getting 1 at all due to transmissions constraints. Still my point is the same, if this engine found its way into all thier smaller cars they would be an absolute force in the Japanese/Korean car market.

Thank you for your great review. I just traded my 2020 Nissan Rogue SV after taking a test drive on the new 2022 Nissan Rogue SL. I love the new 3 cylinder turbo which has more punch than does the 2020. I am impressed that Nissan updated the powertrain so soon after giving the Rogue a major refresh in 2021. The only thing that I am not a big fan of are the paddles which is supposed to add that "manual" feel but it just does not feel right on a CVT and if you are not careful with putting the Rogue in drive you could be accidentally put in this "manual" mode. This Rogue has more power and torque than does the 2020 iteration(the 2020 tends to whine more when you floor it). I also saved roughly $40.00 per month on insurance payments over the 2020 Rogue (thank you for all of the new safety features on the 2022).

I've had my 2022 Rogue for some 3 months and love it BUT it just developed a "whirring" sound under the hood, starting about 35 mph. Does it accelerating and decelerating, but somewhat different tones to each. It started after I had to punch in the turbo on the interstate to get out of someone's way. I'm wondering if it is the turbo fan I'm hearing. I'll be taking it into the dealer soon. Let me know if anyone else who has a 22 hears this same "whirring" sound.

I feel like turbos are thirsty if you use the power a lot. The 2.0 in my bronco sport is running around 9L/100 average which is below the stated on window sticker. And that’s mostly short drives. I recently made a 400km round trip and it was running between 8.2 and 8.6L/100. Driving my normal 10 above speed limit and using cruise. Put my foot in it to pass but otherwise kept it out of hard acceleration. I’m really impressed especially considering I came from a NA 3.5 in a Ford Flex which struggled to stay below 15L/100

I was looking at 2021 version and then noticed the 3 cylinder in 2022, 2023. Im floored that the 3 cylinder isn't new and has more power. Youve changed my mind today.... I had my eye on a 2018 RDX because I hate the infotainment system in the newer RDX's. Dont like the trak pad at all. I test drove my friends 2021 Rogue and loved it over the CRV and Rav 4. Quieter, better acceleration and not the loud noise. CRV was sluggish. I really want that tan interior with a blue exterior or possible white. (Im afraid red will get me tickets😂 Its a shame I have to drive almost an hour just to test drive this Rogue. None in my immediate area of North county San Diego. I really appreciate your opinions on all cars. It has helped me tremendously. (still a Porsche gal at heart, but one can always dream😊)

@@kennedy9072 Thank you very much, it's always nice to get positive feedback and hear from our viewers that they actually like what we do. There are positives to every vehicle we review and then of course some negatives as well, we like to point out both. Although some may not like the CVT in the Rogue, it's still a great SUV that offers a lot of practicality for families and the interior fit and finish for this class is very good. The turbocharged engine is new, some may not be comfortable buying it and if that's the case wait a year or buy something else.

Great review as always. I think I would spring for the regular 4 cylinder motor that's been proven. These newer motors are getting a little too tech laden just to see marginal improvements in fuel economy although I understand why manufacturers do it as they need to achieve a fleet wide target of less fuel/emissions. Even though turbo motors push out great power I think NA motors will actually become the desired motor because of their simplicity.

Great review Guys. The new Rogue is the baby brother to the new Pathfinder. Nissan should have made a Hybrid version, with more HP, more Torque and better MPGs (2023 Honda CRV, despite the nice Interior of the Rogue, could set this Rogue on its Heels). Honda's 1.5 T (4 cylinder) has shown to have oil dilution problems - their Hybrid CRvs use a 2.0 L , non Turbo combined with Electric motors. Smart.

It'll be nice for the consumer with more hybrid options on the market but I think for car manufacturers, they are better off putting r&d on electric cars than investing it on hybrids since there are policies around the world that will be banning cars with any emission (full internal combustion or hybrid) in 10-15 years. If a manufacturer already have the technology it'll make sense, but aside from the Japanese and Chinese market, it doesn't look like nissan have a strong hybrid portfolio to begin with

The base engine simply not up to the segment filled with Mazda's 2.5/2.5T, Honda 1.5T and even Toyota's legendary hybrid powertrain. Its also much more refined than Ford's inline-3 in both Bronco Sport and Escape. Let's hope the next QQ will be getting a potent turbo engine to replace its 2.0 when it arrives in Canada. BTW, its interior is much better executed than anything comes from Infiniti.

I have the 21 and no complaints about the power at all with the 4 banger getting 32 mpg! I have it in platinum and you definitely didn’t talk up that offering as not available by anyone else in this class! You can’t bring yourselves to appreciate this rogue like you do Honda and toyo, they clearly need to grease you more like they do. That interior is unlike any other offering in the class and you never said it, panoramic sunroof. Nissan smart to not hit the market with something as useless and polluting as a hybrid and EV, need to wait until there is a place to plug in and a plan for disposal, batteries decomposing in landfills is the worst thing for the drinking water table!

As always, a very nice, balanced review! I really like your uplifting tone while still being honest and neutral. By the way, Nissan already did put in the work: At least over here in Europe we have the global version X-Trail, which is pretty much the same car, in a Mild Hybrid config (so this very engine with a small electric motor assisting), and as a full Hybrid called E-Power, which also comes as an all wheel drive version named e-4orce. It's a beast with 214Hp and 525Nm of Torque between the front and rear motor. In that setting, (also with this motor but only as a generator) the car itself drives 100% electric, so you got all your EV goodies like E-Pedal, full EV mode, e-Force AWD and ride control, stuff like that, but there is no need to charge and it pulls 4000 pounds and still has a range of around 250mi in that setting. Pretty awesome. It also has a much nicer 12,3" infotainment screen and Matrix LED headlights. I'm pretty sure that stuff will come over to the Americas eventually.

I am really confused by the new Rogue. Last year, I test drove a 2021 Rogue, with the new body but old 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine and CVT transmission. It was very comfortable, but totally boring and lethargic to drive. And now I just rented a 2022 Rogue for a few days. Strangely, it also had the old 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine (I checked under the hood). I thought that all 2022 Nissan Rogues in the US now come with only the 3 cylinder engines. Even more strangely, it was the opposite of the 2021 I test drove. First, the driver’s seat was much more uncomfortable. What happened to the famous Nissan “gravity” seats? And it was also much more powerful and better-handling than I remember from when I test drove the 2021. The CVT in the 2022 I rented felt nothing at all like the CVT in the 2021 I test drove. And yet it clearly had the 2.5 liter engine. I checked under the hood because I was so surprised by how much more powerful it felt compared to the 2021 Rogue. I expected to find the 1.5 liter turbo 3 cylinder and was very surprised to find the old 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. How is this possible? Does Nissan sell the base Canadian version of the Rogue (with the 2.5 liter engine and upgraded CVT) in the US for rental fleets? That’s the only explanation I could come up with. (It also had AWD).

Great video as usual guys, but there is no way on God's green earth that I would spend that kind of money on a 3 cylinder non-hybrid turbo that's basically designed to wear out faster. milking over 200 horsepower out of a 3 cylinder engine? Good luck with that reliability especially long-term.

I have this new 22 with the 1.5 turbo.

Thanks for the great review. I just bought the Rouge because it is in stock in Southern CA. Honestly, I will go for CRV or hybrid RAV4 if I could. But both Honda and Toyota dealers are more greedy than Nissan by jacking up the price and their demand is so high that no cars in stock. We had a 2018 CRV, and we love it. I like my Nissan Rouge, too. Only big concern is the reliability of the new engine. But I took the risk already for the impressive mpg for non hybrid cars. Two cons for SV trim, 1) the cloth seat is very firm; 2) why no divider in the cargo area? there is a lot of waste room above the spare tire and the surface is not perfectly horizontally flat like CRV when folding down the back seat.

What do you mean by drone? Do you mean engine noise during heavy acceleration because every car makes noise during acceleration. People act as if it's not supposed to make any noise lol. If you floor it the engine revs up and then shifts like a regular auto so there isn't any droning. Droning means it stays at a constant rpm say 3k or 4k rpm at a steady pace and that'd what drone means. After you hit 2500 rpm the engines/trans starts to lock into a ratio where it raises the rpm and proceeds to shift.

The sad truth about any turbocharged engine is this: to produce power(torque/horsepower) fuel is a necessity. The harder your accelerate, the more fuel used, the worse your mpg is going to be. Having worked at a Nissan dealership and worked at a Toyota dealership and with a former Subaru technician is that compared to Nissan's reputation for CVT issues, Subaru has more problems, anf Toyota has problems with driveline components that are unheard of in a Nissan. That said, when I worked at Toyota, we stocked rear differentials and driveshafts for almost all their AWD SUVs and minivan, and could sell each and every one in stock within a month -- if not some of them repeatedly in a day; yet we stocked none at the Nissan dealership and I never even seen a sale of any of them in the couple years I worked there. I currently work as a Ford dealership and have seen as many driveline components go out the door in four years as I have while at Toyota in just one year. Additionally, a truck driver picking up used CVTs from us cited that while he picked up only 8 CVTs from us that week, he picked up in excess of 25 CVTs from the Subaru dealership down the street.

The reviews from Australia and the UK describe the Rogue hybrid (X-trail there) as a near perfect driving SUV power plant that just doesn’t quite get the fuel economy expected from a hybrid, but the drive experience is a dream.
