This is a couple car comparison of the 2022 Subaru Forester and the 2022 Nissan Rogue, both of these compact SUVs received updates for 2022.The Nissan Rogue has a new 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine matched to a CVT, 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada but all trims in the US have FWD and AWD options. The base engine only available in Canada, not the US is the 2.5L 4-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. There are both FWD and AWD options available. The Subaru Forester has just one engine option, a 2.5L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque with standard AWD. The Rogue is a little bit longer than the Forester, they offer the same front row legroom space but the Forester has almost an inch more second row legroom. Overall cargo capacity and space behind the second row goes to the Rogue. The Rogue also offers an available Divide-N-Hide cargo system to give you multiple options to store your items; this is standard on the SL trim. Both the Forester and Rogue have their own unique style with large doors making it easy to get car seats and kids in and out of the vehicle. Both offer a comfortable and spacious interior with similar standard features, however the Rogue gets a larger 8” touchscreen, available 9” and the Forester 6.5”, available 8” touchscreen. The Forester does not have a wireless charger, head-up display or wireless Apple Carplay, which is available on the Rogue. Both do not have ventilated front seats available on any trim. The Rogue gets best in class fuel economy with its new turbocharged engine getting 8.4L/100km, 28 MPG in the city and 6.7L/100km, 35 MPG on the highway. The Forester gets 9L/100 km, 26 MPG city and 7.2L/100km, 33 MPG highway. In Canada, the Rogue AWD with the non-turbo engine starts at $31,448 CAD. The base turbocharged model starts at $35,748 CAD/$28,350 USD and the top trim is $42,398 CAD/$38,130 USD. The Forester starts at $29,495 CAD/$25,195 USD and the top trim is $40,595 CAD/$35,295 USD.

I just upgraded from my 2020 Forester Touring to the 2022 Forester Touring. I love the new package, the new aggressive speed the engine and CVT gives you to the new 2 tone leather inside the car. The engine is also quieter than the 2020 model. I like the redesigned front end also. Can’t be happier!

Love your channel guys..... no BS, just good solid information on vehicles which is very much appreciated. I bought a 2008 Subaru Forester, brand new in the Fall of '07. It has been a delight to drive and is still very functional and reliable. I just turned 155,000 miles, put a new water pump and timing belt on it and am looking forward to putting well over 200,000 miles on it. I really do like the '22 Forester, Base Model too. It's very functional, sporty, pleasing to the eye and for a new practical vehicle, can't beat that starting price of just over $25,000. I'd love to pick one up but starting a new round of monthly car payments just isn't where I want to go right now with the economy in such shambles. Maybe once the economy improves I'll reconsider. Keep the videos coming guys.....they are very enjoyable to watch!

Im leaning toward the Rogue. I like the output rating of the 3 cyl turbo at 200hp vs the lower rated Forester, the better gas mileage and the dealer outlined a lifetime powertrain warranty. I also think the trim levels are nicely appointed. I have a 2010 Forester and definitely noticed the Rogue’s cabin visibility was obscured versus the Forester but see that as a get used to it issue.

We have just started the process to purchase a new Subaru Forester. We looked at other vehicles for about a nano second and came back to Subaru. This will replace our 11 year old Outback that we have put over 255,000. Km on. The Forester will join the ‘18 crosstrek that is also in our stable. @@marcusbrutus1999 With direct injection engines you need to drive them long enough for the engine to heat up to burn all the crap out of the oil. A cold car is not efficient. Our ‘18 crosstrek (direct injection) has 106,000 km on it and has been rock solid. Once a week a direct injection engine just needs a good highway drive to get up to temperature to burn the contamination out of the oil. It also needs to be changed regularly…not according to the service interval. I change e the oil every 6 k km. Sevice is the key to a long engine life. Sorry it didn’t work out for you…

I like the Subaru Forester very much and it is near the top of my list to buy. However, its lack of power is very underwhelming and could derail it as a choice. Since your reviews on the Nissan Rouge have come out, I am now seriously considering it as one of my top choices. I agree completely with Andrea about the horsepower and torque and the design is totally acceptable. In passing situations and entrance onto the expressway from off-ramps the power and torque are necessary. Unless Subaru comes out with a more powerful engine, like a turbo, a hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid, I'm afraid it will fall off my list of choices.

God forbid you buy the Rogue basing on this review (or anything else basing on the reviews from these guys). The Rogue safety rating is only 4* - that is very unusual, rare case. The Forester CVT is far more advanced than what Nissan has. The Forester is a roomier, more comfortable car. The driver position is more convenient. The visibility is better. The Forester is a far better off-roader. And finally - it has enough power and torque for safe driving. If the Wilderness trim within your budget - go for it. Another trim to look at is "Sport" (not Limited, not Touring). Just forget about Nissan.

@@cruiseadmiral for 2022, both Rogue and Forrester are top safety picks. Nissan has more powerful engine, and at the same time is more efficient. Forrester is slower. Their predicted reliability ratings are almost identical (one point difference on 100 point scale). Nissan car seats comfort (the original design made in cooperation with NASA) is second to none. Rogue offers more standard features. Neither Rogue nor Forrester are off-road cars.

@@spol1622 2022 Rogue "Early Release" has 4* out of 5. The "Later Release" in 2022 has 5*. As to 3-cylinder turbo engine, it immediately puts the Rogue out of my shopping list. The Forester is a more comfortable car overall, it rides better and has better off-road capabilities. However it does not matter, because for me as a buyer, there is no question what is better. Buying the Rogue with a 3-cylinder turbo and Nissan CVT is simply out of the question. Regards.

@Vinicius B. Good to hear back on this. I have not taken it back because I fear I will hear just what you said: "this noise is normal, nothing wrong with your Rogue". I would LOVE to drive another new Rogue to see if I hear this "normal" whirring noise, as I don't recall hearing it during my test drive. And does your turbo sound rachius (groany-noisy)? It's not a nice sound and I can drive the car very conservatively, so as to really never hear it. I tested a 22 Chevy Equinox 1.5 turbo before my Rogue purchase and I thought it was not only smoother when "kicked" but quiet too. (the rest of the car just wasn't up to par with the Rogue at all). Anyway, I'll pop it into Sport mode to see if I hear any difference and get back to ya. (for the most part now, I just turn up the radio to drown out the whine/whirring noise)

So yeah, the Rogue is a smarter choice with a higher resale value around here. In this pairing.

@@rickitynick4463 The Rogue is on the bottom rung as far as depreciation goes along with the VW Tiguan and Mitsubishi Outlander. The Forester, RAV4 and CRV are all better with the Mazda CX-5 in the middle. I'm not saying they're bad - have a family member who's owned a Rogue for 8 or 9 years and its been trouble free for her. I'm just saying all things being equal I'll choose car with better resale value. Maybe in your local market that isn't the Subaru but I'd wager nearly anywhere else it is. BTW, Consumer Reports ranks the Forester a notch better in reliability than the Rogue.

@@jeffmorse645 Well, true, older Nissans didn't appreciate very well, but the newer ones are a different story. The thing is, once you account for the cost of ownership, you'd BETTER get that money out of the Sub, because it cost you more to own over the life of the vehicle. So I guess my point is I'd rather have a more economical vehicle that is just as reliable, easier to live with, more fun to drive, and costs me less to own over the life of the car than hoping/counting on getting bit more $$$ when I sell it. EDIT: You weren't kidding about a 'notch' What is it? 82 vs 83? Yeah, so the Forester ranks a notch above the Rogue, Nissan in general ranks a notch above Subaru. Eh, let's call it a wash )

These opinions are very much stuck in a 80-90's mindset. Nissan has been putting turbos on cars and making them reliable for decades. I had a turbo 240z that had 200+ thousand miles and didn't burn a drop of oil. Most car manufacturers have figured things out for decades now. Not only that, Nissan has been developing this engine and the tech for it since pre-2014, when they put it's grandfather into a Le Mans Hybrid racecar. That 3cyl 1.5l turbo made 400hp and 285lb-ft. Smaller engines and reliability are not mutually exclusive.
