Good walk around review Peter, lots of thoughtful commentary! And nice to see a base model looked at. The Rav4 and Kia Sportage hybrids are really the prime choice hybrid SUVs based on price/features, nothing else comes close and I suspect my wife will be in one or the other in the next year or so. I bought a new Camry hybrid this year, it was a good deal if paying cash as Toyota never has good financing rates but the cash price of their vehicles is quite competitive. While I came close to getting a full EV, I realize now a benefit of the hybrid is how infrequent I need to think about refueling; I'm barely at the gas pump and I don't have to think about plugging in or range planning. At first I really felt I was compromising with a hybrid but now I feel it was the right choice for me.

Yeah, I think most people would be perfectly happy switching to a hybrid if they were honest about their needs (obviously id you need a V8 growl, these aren't for you!) I own a Kia Soul EV (full electric vehicle) and a Jeep Wrangler 4XE (Plug-in Hybrid) and I really like them both for my family's needs. The EV does everything we need in town, and around town, and my garage is our fuelling station. That's super convenient! Our PHEV gives me my daily commute on pure electric power in all but the absolute coldest weather, and gives me a powerful vehicle (375 hp, 470 lb-ft) for our family road trips where we tow a small trailer. That combination works great for us right now.

I own this exact model (different color :) It is a very good vehicle, in my opinion. Reliable and efficient. I've been driving it since May, 2023 (purchased it as a used car, with some 16K KM), and it has not given me any problem so far. A good example of Toyota Quality.

We're veering towards the straight hybrid like this in the UK at the moment ~ public charging costs are making BEV more expensive than 'wet fuel' to run now. Charge at home is OK, so PHEV would be OK, but the added cost of PHEV wipes out any savings (currently). Also diesel used to be popular here (and pushed by the government), but since the Russia/Ukraine conflict, diesel has become so much more expensive such that it only benefits those who drive very large mileages. I'm definitely headed towards the hybrid now.

Yeah, I had questions about hybrids when I first started learning about them, but having owned them, and run with them. They're really a logical step for most people. Better mileage, not that much more money anymore, and far less compromises than they used to have. The big thing is that they've also proven to be exceptionally reliable. That's a big thing for a lot of people!

@@PeterLoweOne Europe was reliant on Russian diesel, but are now trying to replace the source. There have already been shortages at the pumps, so petrol/gasoline with hybrid to improve the range is a good compromise. Here the prices are around £1:50/l for petrol, and £1:70/l for diesel ~ so the more expensive fuel costs significantly more: factor all that in when you/we calculate cost per mile on petrol (with HEV) against diesel, and the new petrol hybrids have easily found their place.

I’ve just purchased the base model in the UK and I’m more than happy with it. The car has only done 400 miles since I got it delivered 3 weeks ago, and not once has the MPG figure been below 60 mpg, 61 being the lowest 68 being the highest, but that might be down to my driving style

Oh forgot to add, ordered my car in February 22 and it was delivered to the dealer on New Year’s Eve. Even though it’s the base model Icon, and it was supposed to be the 2019 to 2021 / 2 version, it has the updated and large infotainment system, a cargo cover in the boot and front fog lamps, oh and a spare wheel ( not full size though ) It does have the headlights though from the 2021 model. The same model if ordered now would be £ 5000 more, but all you would get is the new headlights and updated fog lamps.

Hi Peter, would you chose the top trim 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or the 2023 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate hybrid top trim for longevity/reliability and we also have 3 teenage kids. The RAV4 hybrid is $5000 Canadian more expensive. We will be keeping the SUV long term. Loved your videos at the other dealer btw. TIA
