2023 marks an important year for the Honda CR-V. Not only is it the start of a new model generation, 6th to be exact, but it’s also the first hybrid CR-V. At least for us here in Canada. So to find out how good it is, I decided to compare it against the benchmark of hybrid compact crossover SUVs; the 2023 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid.
Unlike the gasoline-only version of the CR-V, the 2023 CR-V Hybrid uses a naturally aspirated 2.0L 4-cylinder engine which is aided by electric motors. This powertrain has a total output of 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque (152 kW & 334 Nm). On its own, the engine produces 145 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque (108 kW & 187 Nm). This hybrid powertrain can only tow 1,000 lbs, 500 lbs less than the gasoline-only version.
The 2023 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid uses a larger 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine with aid from electric motors. Its total output is 219 hp (163 kW) but Toyota doesn’t like to publish torque figures for the total output. What I can tell you is that the engine produces 176 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque (131 kW & 221 Nm) while the electric motors produce 149 lb-ft and 89 lb-ft of torque (202 Nm & 121 Nm). It has one motor next to the engine and one mounted in the back to power the rear wheels. Towing capacity is higher than the CR-V Hybrid at 1,750 lbs.

I have a RAV4 XSE hybrid that I purchased new last year. The CRV interior is what I wished my interior looked like. It’s so luxe while my RAV4 looks very plain/utilitarian. I do prefer the exterior body style of mine over the CRV though. Hopefully Toyota will work on classing up their interiors.

If one functions well, and it is easy and still comfort to operate and really reliable, then it doesn't matter if its interior design is a bit old looking. It is getting the buttons and screens to function the same. That is what happens to rav4. I am really satisfied with my rav4 hybrid limited, 2019 as compared to all my past owned honda cars. if wanting a total different experience and interior, then go try a full ev. Also rav4 outlook does stand out and that gives me a good feeling

No spare tire in the Honda CRV is a deal breaker for me. Hard to go anyplace with a flat and the RAV4 has one and will leave the Honda by the side of the road. In the end, it's what gets you to where you are going that matters and the Honda will leave you flat!

@solonfroilan897 Consider yourself lucky. Remember you used your spare tire when you had those flats. Know that there will be some people who may have flats in the middle of nowhere and need a spare and will not have one. They wouod he stranded. A spare tire is like car insurance. There are some drivers who have been driving for over 30 years and never made a claim, but they still pay insurance. All Toyota cars or suv come with a spare tire. Do you think they are doing something wrong?

@solonfroilan897 I simply mean Toyota is doing the right thing by providing a spare tire in all its vehicles. Honda is doing wrong by not providing a spare tire. It is like insurance. They need to make provision to fit a spare tire in every vehicle. There are some people who will be unfortunate to have a flat tire where they will be stranded for hours or even more than a day just because the car does not have a spare tire. The tire inflator does not fix all kinds of flat tire.

Has anyone else noticed that many car reviewers claim to be taller than they actually are? I think they do this to make the vehicles seem more spacious when they're filming in them. When this reviewer said "my 6'4" frame", I thought sure, tell me another one. But then standing beside the CR-V, he really is.

I like your approach to this. I've vetted both the CR-V and RAV4 Hybrids, and your analysis is spot on from what i"ve read, seen, and heard from other reviews. Not one review actually showed how you can adjust the trunk floor for a little more room. I'm definitely purchasing the Rav4 Woodland simply for my mild off roading lifestyle, price, and most importantly, gas mileage! I"ve had cars with all the bells and whistles, so that's not a priority for me. Thank you for time and sharing your experience.

The RAV4 uses port and direct fuel injection which allows fuel to wash over the back of the intake valves. This process keeps the valves clean and prevents them from getting carbon build up. The CRV only uses direct injection. Without the intake valves having fuel wash over them, carbon will build up over time. This can cause issues like poor fuel economy, misfires, and possibly turbo damage if not addressed. Yes, the CRV uses a small turbo engine. My choice was based on reliability, longevity, and low maintenance. The RAV4 all the way!

What you say about direct injection is true. But using an additive once a month, might take care of the issue. But as Scotty Kilmer will tell you, the Hybrid CR-V model uses a 2.0 liter Atkinson cycle engine & NOT the.1.5 Turbo from the non-hybrid models.

Unfortunately we do not get the hybrid version of the Nissan Rogue. I drove the turbo 3-cylinder version (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMt3jMh5yNCwmJ8.html) and I thought Nissan did a great job with it. For long road trips, I think that CR-V is just a bit quieter and a bit more comfortable. But if you find a better deal on a Rav4, you won't be disappointed with it. As for the last question, hybrids are fairly close to having the same fuel efficiency numbers as gasoline-only cars on highways. They really make the most sense on city streets. So for mostly road trips, it may not be worth the extra cost of a hybrid over a gas-only car. But again, if you can find a great deal on a hybrid vehicle in your area, take it.

One other difference that wasn't mentioned: Due to the location of the battery pack in each of the vehicles, the RAV4 has room under the rear storage area for a spare tire (it's only the small, temporary "space saver", but still a tire), the CR-V doesn't have room for any form of spare and has only the pretty much useless "tire repair kit". For me, in any car, that's pretty close to a show stopper.

Just a little research and you can see that the woodlands edition comes in an AT tire and stiffer stocks then normal hybrid which in turn lowers mpg by 2-3mpgs. On top of that they increase driving noise and stiffer ride quality from the tires and shocks. Also the woodlands comes with roof rack cross bars which also lowers mpg by 1 or so and increases wind noise. The fact the rav4 in this setup compared almost identical to Honda and was even quieter is amazing. Rav4 for the win

Good video. Great comparison.i loved the rav4 look but that was many years ago with current design. They've needed a redesign for quite awhile when Honda CRV looks modern and great and Sportage and Tuscon are ultra modern. Toyota rides on its reliability and better mileage. I'm leaning to Honda despite loving my 2010 Venza still going strong. I can't accept such a dated look to RAV4 which might not get a redesign until late 2024. That's ridiculous.

Toyota has always been that way. Outdated look and tech compared to other brands. Also very cheap material for lower trim. My first car is a Camry, even though I love the reliability I really hate looking like an old man driving a Camry in my teenage years. Honda has always been better for styling and look, as well as practicality uses of space. Growing up, I didn't care much about best reliability as I never intended to keep the same car for more than 5 years. As long as it's Japanese build, I'm all for style and comfort interior.

The CR-V doesn't have an EV switch because it only gets driven by the gasoline engine at "final gear" (virtual gear). Below that speed, it operates in series hybrid mode, that is, it's driven only by the electric motors and the gasoline engine operates as a generator-charger only.

Doesn't the new Accord Hybrid use the same powertrain as this? The Accord has an EV-only switch.
@gilbs72
@gilbs72 8 ай бұрын
The Honda two-motor hybrid system works similarly to a series-hybrid at lower speeds: the large motor provides traction while the gasoline engine charges the battery and during light acceleration may provide extra power to the motor--both achieved through the smaller motor-generator. The gasoline engine is not engaged to provide traction until it reaches highway speeds. This is the main difference between it and Toyota's planetary gear hybrid system which combines both motor and engine traction, whichever is the best combination. I'm not familiar with the Accord's EV switch. If I may guess, maybe it forces the motor to depend exclusively on the batteries (until it is almost drained). Seems to me having the EV mode button is an option but the way traction is produced is the same.

Yes, I have reviewed the Sportage Hybrid: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbKAn9uFzZ_VXWw.html I prefer the slightly quieter interior of the CR-V, as well as the more spacious interior, but the Sportage is very good in providing value for money. Plus like the Toyota, the Sportage hybrid is available with multiple trim levels unlike the CR-V (at least for us in Canada). If I had the budget, I'd probably still go for the CR-V but if dealers are still marking up the CR-V hybrid and if more Sportage Hybrids are available, I'd be perfectly happy with the Sportage.

@nsteblay
@nsteblay Жыл бұрын
Honda's i-MMD architecture is very different from Toyota's power split planetary gear CVT. The car is driven primarily by an electric motor with the gas motor used for charging. In parallel mode, a clutch system is used to engage the gas engine at two different ratios. Rather than use a torque converter or mechanical pulley or belt, the two-motor hybrid system relies on the interplay of the two motors for driving and generating power. This form of drive force transfer offers smooth and predictable acceleration matched with efficient low-rpm highway cruising when the gasoline engine is in operation.

Unfortunately very few manufacturers actually provide measurements of the cargo area. At least with the Liters or cu-ft method, you can go to another video that I made and get a rough idea of which vehicle has a bigger or smaller trunk area. As for off-road, most of the time I'm not allowed to go off-road unless it's an off-road focused vehicle like the Ford Bronco. I don't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers like other channels so it's easy for a manufacturer to stop providing me with cars and it won't affect them. So I need to be respectful of their vehicles and not return them with any damage.

The Honda uses direct only fuel injection. In time the inlet valves will carbon up. The RAV4 uses Toyotas eCVT which has been around for 23 years, is very reliable and has no clutches, valves or fluid, unlike the Honda whose design is new and untested. The RAV4 uses a separate electric motor for AWD. The Honda uses a transfer case, shaft and diff which is heavier and requires more maintenance. After 100,000 miles, I would expect the Toyota to be more reliable.

They are both too expensive compared to comparable gas options, for it to be financially advantageous. It takes too long for you to come out ahead. If one saves, say 3 liters per 100 km, and that is a big if, because we're still talking heavy suvs here and not little sedans like the Prius. Driving 20k km in a year, would save 600 liters of gas. If gas costs, say $1.67 per liter, that it cost $1,000 less in gas per year. But if the car costs 10 grand more, you'd have to drive it for 10 years to break even. And then there is the car loan to consider, which makes it worse. Sure, it drives nicer. Probably quicker to accelerate. That's great. But purely money wise, I don't think so. There are often people that like to cherry pick and select listings where on paper it looks like it would cost a mere 2 grand to get the hybrid option over the gas option. But in practice it does not work out that way. What's available is just far more expensive than 2 grand more. Also, compare across brands. When I say comparable, you have to consider the Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, and VW Taos/Tiguan (honestly I don't know specially about the VW), Hyundai Tuscon, Kia Sportage, Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander, and possibly more. Similar size, weight, seating space, cargo area. Looking across all those options, and it becomes clear that in practice, it will cost a heck of a lot more than 2 grand for you to drive a similar hybrid off the lot. That's just how it is. It's possible to cherry pick lists to make oneself feel good about spending the money, but you're basically being had, and turned a blind eye to protect that confirmation bias. That's how humans work, when one wants to love a choice. Cars are often an emotional decision, and not a logical one. And that's ok though. Just know that if one truly wants to make a claim how they saved money, they'll discover there wrong when battling out the numbers - which I have done many times. For example, Outlander PHEV doesn't save money at all. The car is just too expensive. I'm seeing how in Canada the RAV4 PHEV *USED* is pushed at nearly 60k (CAD). Oh, and then there are the waiting lists. Oh, and this year, while I hoped that the car market would improve, it seems it's not improving. I'm seeing car prices rise further, again ! *IS* it shortages, I wonder? Is the industry purposely aggravating things by maintaining what seems like slowness. So long as possible enter the waiting list, they still sell the same number of cars. It seems that lineup is benefiting the industry. Is that lineup artificial at this point, I wonder... all to drive up and maintain an inflated cost. It's all a game of money in the end.

In USA Honda CRV is cheaper then RAV4 hybrid

Are you sure? They both have the same price (give or take a few hundred dollars) at the top spec end. The Rav4 Hybrid is just over $1,000 USD less starting price than the CR-V Sport Hybrid.

@@MGReviewsBlog the dealerships here in america are marking up the 2023 rav4s 4-5k more than the CRV on average. the 2023 CRV not only looks much better, but handles better, has more space, and has better interior as far as quality.

@@MGReviewsBlog Sport Touring's at my local dealership are 40k, and the Sports are 35k. Problem is that it's almost impossible to get a Sport Touring they were all sold out and it was like 1-2 month wait. Almost all Rav 4 Hybrids are well over 40k.

@@jeschr3462crv has a horrible interior. Whole thing felt very cheap to me. I chose a 23 rav4 over 24 crv. Both hybrid. Night and day difference between the quality. Crv is very quiet tho, low cabin noise.

You forgot to mention that the Honda doesn't have a spare tire, but the Toyota does. That is the biggest deal breaker for me. The tire kit is a waste of time I'll take a temporary spare anytime.

There's no question Toyota hybrid is way up there in efficiency and reliability. But there are more about owning a car than just that for me. For that I think Toyota has a lot of work on other aspect of their cars. This gen of CR-V has a lot of improvements on exterior styling. But I believe that rear right design is pretty much taken from Volvo. I don't like the interior grill style dash. But again this gen dash is a good improvement over the last gen for sure. Hope the driving dynamics have improved as well as all the previous gen CR-V are simple not good to drive. Neither an SUV nor a car making them awkward and simply absent of any character in a vehicle

the CR-V Hybrid is way overpriced. Honda has been out of control with their pricing latley and they don't offer Canadians the same choices as Americans, thats insulting and greedy. If anything people can wait 1 more year for a brand new Rav4 that'll set the standard again. Toyota said the new 2025 Rav4 will have their new Solid State battery too.

Ooohhhh, solid state for the next generation Rav4? I thought those were still about 5-7 years out before hitting the market.
