Toyota has upped the maximum towing capacity to 12,000 pounds. The nicely equipped limited trim I was sent retains a towing capacity of over 11,000 lbs.
We test the Tundra over a 65ish mile towing course that includes 1,000 feet of elevation change and 7% grades. We also tried out Toyota's Trailer Backup Assist.
Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.
New videos every Friday at 6:30 A.M. MST and occasionally on Wednesdays.

@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures Жыл бұрын
This was a media loan that I only had for a week, and no this one didn't have airbags. Honestly squat doesn't matter too much unless it's extreme, a proper weight distribution hitch will take care of a lot of that. No you don't want your headlights pointing to the sky, and a stiffer suspension will be more stable when towing, but I wouldn't base a truck's capability off of how much it squats under load.

How much was the squat with the trailer hooked up? I don’t do much off roading, I’m leaning more towards the limited model with tow mirrors and load leveling rear suspension. Would love to find a video of daily driving with rear airbags vs coils.

Thanks for watching and commenting! Honestly I don't ever measure or care too much about the sag. It seemed like it almost leveled the truck (the rear sits a little higher than the front when unloaded). I did attend a Tundra event in Denver, and I drove a Capstone model with the air springs. The course they had was only a few miles but there wasn't a big difference between the coils and air springs. The air springs were a little smoother, but not much.

Coil springs when towing. I had it on my ram and it had lots of squat and sway.
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
It just depends on how the suspension is tuned. There are railcars that use coil springs, for these half ton trucks with payloads in the same range as many crossovers the focus is on a better ride when empty. Coil, leaf, torsion bar, doesn't really matter, each can be tuned however the manufacturer wants them to be.

Thanks for watching and commenting. You're the second person that has said the camera's lines are perfect. I assure you they are not. Maybe the model Toyota sent to me was flawed, but I connected and disconnected from the trailer multiple times with the Tundra. I've towed this trailer with dozens of other vehicles, this Tundra had the worst lines of any I've tested. Also , when your Tundra w/ trailer was moving you to left , could you have taken that "lane keep assist" off or is it always on. Also inquired about Rear Air Suspension on Tundra Limited w/ TRD pkg. & heard Toyota doesn't offer Rear Air Suspension w/ TRD pkg. becuase Billstein struts are too soft & made for off-road , not sure if you heard anything like that. It doesn't look like your rear suspension sagged much at all. Didvyou ever measure before & after trailer hookup. Thanks

This was just a media truck I had to review for a week. I believe the trailer is 21' long. Pretty sure you can turn it off. I should be getting a TRD Pro Tundra to test in a few weeks that I can try the lane keep assist with. I haven't heard on the air suspension, but shocks are easy to change. I don't measure or care about squat, use a weight distribution hitch, like an Equal-i-zer, to improve sway control and reduce squat if it's an issue. Just stay within the manufacturer ratings and you'll be fine.

Great question! No need to manually keep the transmission out of overdrive. It used to be important to stay out of overdrive when towing, but with new vehicles that isn't a concern. Automatic transmissions are much better than they used to be. Yes and no. I went to Moab with a Titan XD diesel towing a trailer. It sucks having to stop every 220ish miles for fuel. Going from 9mpg to 12 mpg while towing can make a huge difference, that's 33% more range per tank. I do love that Toyota focused on performance rather in the new Tundra and Sequoia hybrids (I have a Tundra TRD Pro this week), with fuel mileage improvements being a secondary concern. Also with the 32 gallon tank, range isn't much of an issue.

Why is it necessary to drive 70 while towing?
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
True, if everyone drove 55mph greenhouse gasses would be significantly reduced and so would fuel consumption. Air quality would increase and natural resources would be conserved. I pulled the trailer at 70mph because that was the speed limit. The faster you go the less stable the tow vehicle and trailer will be. When doing a towing test of a vehicle, going faster can help determine how stable the tow vehicle's platform is.
@wt9653

The camera is factory aligned. Your trailer and truck is not straight. It doesn't matter how much you deny it. The trailer is the one that is not straight. Go setup a Lazer levels on both sides the truck and you'll see.
@EngineAdventures

Well in this case it was factory misaligned then. It crossed over at the hitch ball, but then went way off to the other side by the end of the green line. I've towed this trailer with at least 10 vehicles, likely many more, and I've never had an offset camera work perfectly. However, this is one of the worst I've experienced. It's not a deal breaker for me, I still love the truck, just something Toyota could and should improve.

That’s not enough payload. If you had 4 people in that truck with that 4700lb trailer, you’d be completely maxed out. Not really a knock on that truck because all 1/2 ton trucks seem to be about the same, but you almost have to move up to a 3/4 ton truck if you want to tow anything over 5k.

No offense, but you don't know what your talking about. These trucks will tow up to 12,000 lbs when configured right. My limited is rated for 11,300lbs.Tfl put out a video of the capstone towing 10,000 up the ike gauntlet with one passenger and the truck performed so good that the two hosts were having trouble coming up with ways to pick on it. There are ways to account for tongue weight. The right hitch will work absolute wonders and the slightest adjustment of the actual load itself can also help. Their are instructional videos online that can help you understand these things better.
@davesmith2693
@davesmith2693 4 ай бұрын
@@T_81535 No offense taken. I understand payload completely fine. It’s part of my job with our fleet. Yes, you can use a weight distributing hitch and possibly shift your load around some, but the tongue weight of your trailer still comes right out of your payload. Most trailers are recommend to have a 10 to 15% tongue weight. A standard 10,000 pound flat deck or travel trailer will need approximately a 1,000 tongue weight in order to achieve proper balance. A 1,000 pound tongue weight with two 200 pound occupants is 1,400 pounds of payload, which exceeds the payload of a large percentage of 1/2 trucks (not just Toyota). The manufactures are limited the 8500 GVWR because of government regulations. We tried hard to make 1/2 ton trucks work because they’re cheaper, require less emission testing, and get better mileage. Unfortunately, the limited payload just made it not feasible. They cannot tow these numbers is most cases “legally”. We have to stay legal, private owners can do whatever they’d like. It doesn’t have anything to do with what the truck “can” do, it’s all about what they’re rated to carry on their frame.

@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct that Toyota recommends 87. However, most modern engines have engine mapping that will advance or retard timing for the most power without knock. The bigger issue is that I have no idea what fuel was in the truck when it was dropped off to me. When towing I typically will run premium fuel, and the benefits are higher with turbocharged engines vs naturally aspirated.

A good tune will give you benefits with any fuel, but especially with higher octanes. The Tundra's owner's manual says 87 or above recommended, which indicates Toyota has programming in place to run higher octanes. Again you are correct, to maximize gains a tune is most likely needed.

@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 5 ай бұрын
I always run 91 octane in high compression or turbo engines. Even if they can run on lower octane generally they get their best performance with 91+. I also tend to run higher octane while towing as the engine is getting pushed harder and is more prone to knock (which modern vehicles will detect and retard the timing to compensate, but that causes power reduction).

I deliberately don't use a weight distribution hitch for testing vehicles as I want to see how well the vehicle performs. I have access to an Equal-i-zer brand hitch, which is probably the best in the industry. It also provides significant sway control and would skew my test results on how the vehicle actually tows. In general you are correct though, and I recommend that just about everyone towing a camping trailer use a WD hitch!

When it comes to turbos, they're giving you everything they have at about 2500 RPMs. You said "I feel there's a lot more left" but they actually don't have anything left in reserve at that point, they're pushing out 90 to 95 percent of peak torque at 2500. N/A engines like the old 5.7 are where they have more and more to give as you wind them up. So basically at 3000+ in this truck, that's all you got. It will rev higher but it just sounds like its working harder its not actually doing anything more.
