The new Porsche 911 Dakar is an incredibly special, well-thought out vehicle. Imagine a sports car that is capable of simultaneously flying at 80 mph up a gravel road, surfing deep sand dunes at 60, hitting jumps without breaking, going up rocky trails, and running the nurburgring in 8 minutes on all-terrain tires, while giving up nothing in daily drivable comfort. I was so confident the Dakar was going to be my favorite modern 911 that I went all the way to the Sahara desert to drive it. I want one so badly - it is the best thing ever. But I'm also the wrong person to have one. In this video we will learn why.

I really, really like this format, but it works even better when there is a richer story to tell. Overall I think this was a successful proof of concept of merging a review with a unique experience. Definitely feels like a good evolution for your channel. I’d be really interested to see you do this with other cars with interesting backstories, and not necessarily new cars at a press launch. Obviously would take much more work and research, but I’m sure there are so many cool and interesting stories for you to tell (while also reviewing the car) with how many interesting people you know. Nice work.

LOVING the evolution in storytelling here. From someone who's been watching since the viewer-car one-take boom: I don't care about a lot of the cars being reviewed nowadays, but when there's a story/theme tied in or a studio segment, VO, and production quality of this magnitude, I'll come back and watch every last video, every single time.

Bro.. you have way more talent than we see in your normal vids (which are still awesome). You're a great writer, and others have said this format is wonderful. I realize that the time, effort and likely cost that may go into producing this format may not always (ever?) make sense commercially, but if you can.. throw in one or two every now and then. We'd all really appreciate it.

thank you. my third talent is being well aware of the fact that without budget to put this kind of work into a video, it's not worth making. This video took not only days and days to film, but days and days to edit. If it doesn't return literally 10X the money of a one take film, it's not worth doing at all. Sad, but true.

@@TheSmokingTire do stuff with hagerty, they have money look at their crazy video editing like in the tesla plaid lucid air drag race video. also maybe sell cars in exchange for a scuderia glikenhaus scg 008 with electric turbo transverse inline 3 powering electric drive for very smooth immedeate torque vectoring, no high torque downshifts have to be handled by engine or transmission so lighter shorter higher RPM engine . orbis claims their honda type r all wheel drive electric motor and brakes wheel structure, is same weight as stock rear honda wheels they replace, elaphe and koniegseegs motor. in non manual cliutch simulation drive mode, itll be smoothest correlation between driver input, sound, power output, aston v8 sounds pretty good for a turbo so it could be done 95 percent as good as naturally aspirated sound. i think gmat43 will be like this, if they change mind and do 3 seater, passenger seats could be closer to each other behind driver so it could be smaller than gma t50 and even 2 seaters like lotus elise, probably still couple hundred pounds lighter despite using mass production build quality and process unlike high budget t50. inline 3 turbo exhuast scvanging and sound better than inline4. theres a more interesting everymans everyday car and drivetrain concept but it wont let me say much ususally

I've watched the first 40 seconds of this and paused just to say... so far... f-ing awesome. This feels like a blend of Anthony Bourdain and old school Top Gear. I hope the rest of the video plays out like that. If so, this is going to be a winning combination!!! Now, just finished it and I stand by my initial reaction. Excellent video, Matt! Your narrative is exactly correct in it’s tone of amazement at what Porsche have managed to do with the 911, and tinged with just the right amount of disappointment that few of these will ever get put to the use for which they’re intended. I think its great that Porsche has the bandwidth to do this project. I just wish they could make enough regular 911’s that I could walk into a dealer, spec one with expectation that it would get delivered in a reasonable timeframe, and then put as many miles on it as possible. Hard not to be resentful of Porsche for enabling those people with so much money that they can skip all lines, get the shiny thing they want, just to park it or show it.

As a motocross/dirt bike rider that only gets out into the desert a few times a year... This car will rarely see any dirt, if any, with most of it's owners. What a shame and probably why my money is better spent on something I can enjoy more often.

This is a good video Matt. When it makes sense to do the extra production value on a release like this it’s totally worth it. Better use of the background music on this video than previously done. It plays backseat to the spoken word and sound of the car where you want it.

I went through the journey of “Matt’s Top Gear special”, The Classic Matt Intro. Then the thoughtful exposition from the safari enthusiast intersection with the new Dakar… Cue the Synths, and into a down to earth, personal reflection on the realities of a supercar priced 911, that just can’t see to be achievable to one with a modest reality, and commitment to others and responsibilities. I hope that Porsche makes this format in a more available package. Like the 911R, you may never get the real thing, but you get something close off an assembly line. Good closing, hope y’all keep modest and humble. Enjoy the privileges you earned. Well done on the special, to everyone involved. Really. I’ve been enjoying the channel lately. And now it's so amazing to see you return to that style and hit it out of the park!! This video reminded me of what a Carfection meets One Take video would be like and that's the highest praise I can imagine for automotive youtube! Granted this is one of the most special modern factory Porsche's, but I still believe this is one of the best Smoking Tire videos ever! (Up there with the 765LT, new Ford GT, and Tuned's Venom GT)

Safari v Dakar is interesting though because the Safari cars were made for the South African rally in '78, the only factory backed effort which was basically a lifted 911SC, not much more special to it. Dakar was the feat the 959 pulled (and the 953, the very first 4WD 911) which is a lot closer to a C4S 911 than there's ever been so I think the naming makes sense. A Safari car to me would've meant it'd have been a lot more crude and this is quite a macheen indeed. Props to Porsche for the most baller press launch I've seen in years, that looks STUNNING! We reached maximum habibi 😁loving the production quality lately
