Honestly out of everything, my biggest annoyance is getting rid of all the buttons (climate control, heated seats etc). They are not “old-fashioned”, cars look better with them - especially in BMWs with the silver buttons that look really nice! Plus apart from the look, they are easier, better, and safer to use when driving, compared to having to use the screen.

Couldn't agree more. It's just trend for the sake of it (blame Tesla for starting it - out of saving money due to a simpler manufacturing process - but blame the other marques for following blindly even more so)

Jesus. All the complaining about lack of buttons. I had an ‘07 MDX, and a ‘14 Cayenne. Most buttons EVER. I’ve also owned a Model 3 and have a G80 coming. This is enough buttons. Everything is auto these days anyway!

@@fifteen8850Chris Harris and Sam (from Seen Through Glass) have both said it has grown on them. The only way it looks better is if there are even worse designs next to it. BMW XM and iX are both strong contenders. The Alfa and the Project 8 both look fantastic, so it really suffers in that company. I truly hate it and everything that BMW has become, but since I would be unlikely to buy one anyway, they clearly shouldn’t care what I think.

THIS^^^ It's extraordinarily frustrating that manufacturers have gone down this road, so transparently only because it's cheap. Any objective assessment of usability and indeed safety could not fail to find buttons/rotary knobs preferable, yet here we are driving along, distractedly fannying about with hideously over-complex, impossible to use without looking directly at them controls for things as basic as heating. I'm hanging on to my mercifully still-reliable and enjoyable 7 year old, 100,000 mile Golf estate largely because I cannot abide the Mk 8 Golf dash - the Mk 7 dash is both aesthetically and practically so vastly superior. But it's not only the Golf - it's seemingly everything these days. Clearly I'm just going to have to run my trusty non-touchscreen steed forever, possibly like Trigger runs his broom..!

It is vastly cheaper for the manufacturer to eliminate the buttons and just access the systems via the stupid ugly fingerprint coated screen. Not sure the manufacturers are passing on the cost savings to their customers though….

Best era for the modern car was somewhere between 2006 and 2015. Still comforatble, good looks, quality etc. Not too much emissions nonsense

@@stever2168 Whenever someone raises the topic of giant screens and buttonless interiors, I always pin the blame on Tesla (and by extension Elon Musk) for making this trend take off like his SpaceX rockets. Now every manufacturer is copying this design because they don't want to lose even more market share to Tesla. I'm just grateful Musk hasn't decided to remove the steering wheel and pedals yet, but given the Cybertruck already features a steer-by-wire system i.e. no rack and pinion, we're already halfway there. EDIT: Forgot to mention the recent Tesla Model 3 moves the gear selector into the touch screen.

Yeah, that is the thing that annoys me the most in this review since I think that the design is great, one of the best looking M3's ever together with E46 and F80! The car has serious presence and masculinity, especially in person, and that is my opinion as a designer. Since the taste is subjective category, he shouldn't spend so much time convincing us that the car is ugly, since it isn't to many other people out there. He just becomes annoying and unbearable to watch!

2:43 ‘BMW used to be about elegance’ Exactly this. There was a time when M Cars were understated, but still purposeful. Maybe this current design language is for the type of people who want everyone to know they aren’t driving a run of the mill Bimmer, but the G80 M3 and G87 M2 are just atrocious pieces of design

I dropped my car off for a service last Wednesday. In the car park was a lowered E30 323i. Despite being the best part of 40 years old it still looked good. Purposeful, lean. I doubt we'll be saying the same thing about this in another 40 years.

I wasn’t a fan of the E60 M5 or E63 M6 when they first launched, but I think those designs aged quite nicely (especially the M6). But these current BMW’s? Not so sure. Would happily buy a used F80 M3 and pocket the 75k I’d save

Perhaps I'm prejudiced as a former owner, but I think the E60 aged fantastically and ended up a very handsome car. I thought the F10 was a bit inoffensive in comparison so ended up going straight from E60 to G30.

Most “journalists” have been loaned these cars in order to promote a positive buzz for the latest model or whatever. They say whatever they want to impress the brand and therefore maintain a relationship and guarantee future models to “review”. Harry’s approach might sever the relationship but at least he’s honest, unlike most!

Great review as always Harry. I've had BMWs for 20 years and loved them but I really do think they have lost their way on design and styling. I wouldn't even remotely consider buying this. Like you I'd go for a Touring, but for me it would be the Alpina B3 all day long.

I couldn't agree more Harry with your description of the front look of the car. It's a complete 'Dog's arse!' The extra carbon ends on the front splitter will last until you try to park anywhere near a kerb. I'm sure BMW will have a nice stock of these at some exhorbitant price. Keep up the great videos.

E46 is still the best looking 3 series, ever. The best part for me was looking at my 328I rear door to the rear wheel, so elegant, and the zero overhang at the front.

I count myself as a bit of a BMW fanboy, I’ve owned 5 of them so far. I’m with you Harry I hate the looks. I’ve been trying to get used to the grill… 🤢 but alas I can’t. The M5 CS is clearly more of a looker and the Green and bronze on that is way nicer than horrid white which is just plain unclassy. But driving it looks fun. Thanks for a great review. Looking forward to the M5 Touring.

Such an elegant design- I have a Techno Violet one- Harry's favourite colour! Aesthetics are gowping, especially in white. This car has no spirutual connection to the E36 M3, except the 6 cylinder mill, which is great to see back under the bonnet. The arms race with Merc/Audi/etc has driven up weight, so that we have 1¾ tonne 'sports' cars which admittedly disguise their heft well most of the time. Yet those 16 bags of cement can't stay hidden all of the time...

I was so close to buying an F82 M4 CS and this video has made me revisit those photos. My god, looking back. Now that is one stunning looking car….particularly in San Marino Blue. Ummm, the one that got away. This new M3 CS is a real dogs dinner, for all the reasons Harry points out. I’d take his advice too and get a touring or regular M3.

I've got an F82 M4 CS in San Marino Blue. It's an absolute gorgeous animal of a car. Bought it after cancelling a G82 M4 xdrive. 460bhp 600nm of torque and 1550 kgs. Proper car. You won't be disappointed and you'll save 20-30k on a G80/82

My example cost a good chunk less than the CS and ultimately that the was the deciding factor. I do wonder “what if” though. All the best with it :-)

My favorite recent CS is still the 2020 M2 CS. The looks are aggressive yet clean. I really wish BMW would send more Alpina models to the states. An Alpina B3/Alpina B3 wagon.

As BMW continues align with the 'German rainbow' colour palette - consisting of white, silver, grey or black - which includes about 150 shades of grey - I expect that a charcoal grey would be available.

Overrated overpriced & down right a ugly mess with lines all over the place 🤮 What were bmw thinking especially as they have previously made many beautiful m cars in the past like for example the e46 m3 csl .

Totally agree with you, Harry, looks hideous and fussy (looks like front end was designed by a drunken commtitee)...ugly wheels & so many examples of fashion-over-function. 🤢 Dash & seats simply horrible to the eye...and HOW MUCH? If you spending that much you be better investing in Porsche which will not haemorrhage value like this dogs-breakfast of a design BMW will do. Brilliant vid and analysis as usual harry, 10/10! 👍🏻

Can you eke out better fuel economy by putting it in 2wd and all the other settings in comfort? Sure it's a drift mode by design, but I feel like that would be a use for it off the track.

I suspect it’ll sell out for two reasons 1. There are lots of people with more money than taste and 2. Resellers making a quick buck

The Chinese market represents circa 30% of BMWs sales. I bet it will sell like hot cakes within the Chinese market - as they prefer cars with a goofy, cartoonish front end - i.e. the goofier the better.

It looks pants but then every BMW these days looks shit. You can buy an LC500 for this money which is I think a much nicer car in my opinion, nicer outside and inside and you get a much nicer engine. For less money as well. They also really didn't do a very good job of hiding the exhaust back box which you can see very easily from the back.

I agree with you Harry.. I come from the old school with the feel of the car on the road and electric assisted steering is a huge no from me as well. This generation coming up won't know about hydraulic steering because it largely has been phased out. But feeling what the car is doing on the road through the steering wheel is everything. But these new vehicles don't let you drive anymore anyway, with so many vehicle assists.. We came up during a time where you really had to know how to drive. As for the design of the car. They left the barn a while ago. Too toy like to me know.. the 00s and 10s were the best designs they had.

I'm glad Harry is honest about the chipmunk's looks. Even after the design grows on you, the chipmunk face still looks odd and one wonders why they couldn't just do a simple throwback to the e39 and e38.

I hate the beaver front, but I gotta say, the looks on these cars is definitely color dependent.. I saw a dark blue one today with a suspension drop and these wheels in dark gray, the car looked amazing. Lighter colors make it look terrible.
