The biggest problem for the Prime vehicles is poor availability and huge dealership markups.

The biggest problem are the people have the money to pay for the premium. We don't sell it for a price where people don't buy.
@Hallowsaw
@Hallowsaw 11 ай бұрын
@@EveryPriceGougingStealershipits the banks, they are approving loans for long terms,6-10 years making it seem like people can afford the car. You should never go over 5 years, especially used because then your service costs start to double and after 10 years tripple. So imagine paying 400 a month on a 8 year old car that is now only worth 8k and the transmission or hybrid battery goes out, running 5-10k to replace. Its insane.

Don’t blame the dealer or the bank. If buyers are not willing to pay markup, then price comes down. The issue are the consumers willing to pay a extra $50 a month on that loan for 6+ years. Think in terms of car price, not monthly payment people.

Just got mine (in the same grey color) last week. So, for those who feel the cost is just too much (and to be clear, I had sticker shock initially), I went with a Prius Prime because I wanted fully EV and my husband did not. We also have an 18-year-old 2nd generation Prius with 277K miles on it that is still running fine and still getting 55mpg even when I run the AC. It's been hands down the most reliable car needing almost no maintenance. It has never left me stranded. With the very long warranties that both Toyota and the dealer offer on this vehicle, I have no doubt that I'll get another 18 if not 20 years out of the 2023 PP, even as my trusty 2005 starts to show signs of age. THATs where the true savings comes in, in addition to the efficiency. I do realize that the price tag may be out of reach for many but do consider the reliability and the longevity of the vehicle when considering.

@@unnamed774 They asked for $3K over the MSP and then I paid $1500 for the six-year maintenance plan. For the cost of the markup they include free carwash for life, extended the warranty on the ICE to 20 years (IF they do the work) and are on hand if I need tech help. Basically I know where I'm taking my car for service for the next 6 years at least and that it will probably cost me nothing to maintain it.

They need a sporty looking car like this and then also something a little taller in the back for more cargo like the Prius V and headroom. I’ve seen some good looking tall hatchbacks before so not like it’s impossible, maybe the mpg would suffer beyond being able to call it a Prius anymore? Idk

I can't get past the 19-inch wheels. They jack up the price, reduce the MPG, and provide a rougher ride due to having low-profile (and expensive) tires. Those Michelin Primacy's are $262 apiece at Tire Rack. The only other option for that specific size are Toyo Extenzas at $172 apiece.

This new Prius looks amazing, looks futuristic without going over the top. I had a Prius 5 years ago before I got a used FJ Cruiser, which on my daily commute I miss because it's simple to drive and gets over 50 mpg easily (compared to my 15 mpg FJ). Oh on your future reviews, can you happen to mention if your feet/shoes fit under the front seat whenever you're sitting in the back? It makes a big difference as far as comfort. Thanks!

They suck for highway commuting. Standard hybrid is better in that situation. Also also the difference in gas savings between 45mpg to 55mpg is actually significantly less than going from say 40-45mpg. Even though they are both 5mpg difference. There are deminishing returns the better mpg cars get. And if dealers are marking up the plug in 5k, you might as well get the regular. You are not saving 5k in fuel over the life of that vehicle unless you are doing significant city driving. On top of the already higher msrp of the phev

Great review. Realistic assessment of the Prius Prime and the real needs and expectations of the car-buying public. I'm thinking seriously about ordering one BUT I need to get past the idea of parting with my 17 year-old Porsche 911 (122,000 miles) and my 16 year-old V8 4Runner LTD (115,000 miles) -- two of the best vehicles I've ever owned. I'm a senior citizen now and I think I need just one car and the Prius Prime makes a great deal of sense.

My father-in-law bought their first Prius when they were both in their 80's. Pretty sure (at the time), they both would have thought a Porsche was something to hang your coat in. We soon followed suit. Just got our third Prius but first Prime. Our 2024 Prime is a lovely car. Over 6,000 Km (3,750m), now and only used about 1.3 tanks of fuel. Perfect sense Jim.

Speaking of the electric hummer, my boss bought one and it was about 6 months old when he decided to take a road trip. He regretted that. First he had range anxiety, then the Hummer broke down. Apparently the battery went on him and he had to get it towed to the dealership. They said it would cost 30k (Canadian) to replace the battery but luckily it was under warranty. He ended up buying a Land Rover Defender.

I watch the videos no matter what the vehicle is. Really enjoy the content. The one thing that always sticks out to me is does Ryan know how hard most of these cars and trucks are to actually find in stock or at a dealer even willing to order? I live in Dallas and the dealers are really only full of F-150 models, VW ID.4 models and Jeep Gladiators. Every other unit is really just not available. If you do find one, they are still marked up. I actually looked at a Toyota dealer and a Chevrolet dealer with $5-$6k in add-on stickers.

I am so glad I got a base model 2022 Prius Prime for $31,000 last year and was able to use the Oregon rebate program to reduce that price even further. When I drive between Beaverton & Tillamook my Prius Prime does just fine in Eco Mode with two people, but I will switch to Power Mode if I need to pass somebody. I feel that Toyota dropped the ball with the new Prius & Prius Prime between the lack of headroom and the gauge display that goes for flash over functionality. Over $35,000 is way too pricey for a commuter vehicle that is supposed to help people be less dependent on gasoline. Not only that, I'm not paying that much for a vehicle where I can't fit in the back seat comfortably. Furthermore, the 19 inch wheels lack sensibility since they reduce electric range and I'd rather have more sidewall for the various road types in Oregon. Overall, I rather enjoyed your review despite the vehicle having some flaws.

I wish Toyota offered more PHEVs. It's this and the RAV4. I do think Toyota's strategy of hybridizing more of their lineup is more meaninful for reducing emissions than other automakers that make a few BEVs, but are still largely selling ICE vehicles. PHEV is the logical next step. Most people could utilize the EV driving mode for the vast majority of their driving without any impact to their existing lifestyle or driving habits.

I have a 2021 Prius Prime and while the styling is good compared to previous it's not a 2023 Prius Prime. All that being said, I don't think I could go to back to an all ICE or all EV vehicle. Not having to fill your gas tank but once a month or less is soooooo nice. Yet, not having range anxiety either is perfect. It truly is THE best car. Not a giant battery that will take years to offset the carbon emissions created in the process of making the battery and not the enormous amount of greenhouse gases created by driving on gas all the time. When driving on battery 99% of the time AND paired with solar panels and you'll be zero carbon footprint in NO time at all compared to an all electric car with it's giant battery that requires a mountain of minerals to make.

I would LOVE to see the total elimination of stealerships. Why don’t vehicle manufacturers just decide to go direct to consumers, and just built service centers? Dealers are bad for business, most are overpriced, huge markups, many have been caught defrauding customers, and the list goes on. Vehicle manufactures should go direct to consumer and eliminate the middle man. That would make their vehicles more affordable and accessible to most middle class Americans…

I would probably prefer to go with the "regular" Prius with AWD over the Prime. I don't really know how much value that 40-ish miles of all-electric range is going to help anyone -- PHEV prices are usually rather insanely higher than "regular" hybrids, so you've got to drive a LOT of all-electric miles to save enough to cover the initial cost. Yeah, yeah, greenhouse gases and all that, but if you look just a little bit beyond the end of your nose, you might find that billions of people on this planet aren't going to "go electric" within decades, and "industry" is nearly LAUGHING at how the commercial world remains deeply entrenched in the fossil-fueled world. So, perhaps when you see truckloads of Tesla vehicles moving along freeways near you, powered by that so-called "Tesla Semi" truck, then that might show some commitment towards reducing our greenhouse gas emissions beyond just "selling more cars."

Car looks and performs great. Having a mode that uses the gasoline engine to charge the battery is the dumbest thing Toyota has ever done. News flash its more efficient to just use the ICE engine to drive the car than convert the mechanical energy to electricity to chemical energy and back to mechanical energy. I know the engineers couldn't possibly be this stupid, so it must have been the consumers that demanded this clown mode. 😂
@alsheremeta

What if you were on a long road trip, battery is depleted and you are approaching a mountainous stretch with high passes and you want the extra power for that. If you knew how many miles at highway speed you needed to charge the battery fully, you could plan ahead for the passes.

@@alsheremeta The engine by itself is more than sufficient to get you up any reasonable grade that passenger cars are expected to climb. Running the engine to charge the battery up is less efficient than just using the engine. It would make sense on a car with a very small range extender engine that couldn't push you up a hill by itself, but not on this car. You're just trading efficiency for entertainment.
