Winter is quickly approaching, and the time has come to get the garden beds ready for the brutal winter winds, snow, and freezes. In this this short video I hope to show how all of my beds have been prepared for the winter. After the beds were cleaned off from the summer growth, a new layer of compost was added, and then the bed was mulched with about six inches of wheat straw. The heavy mulch protects the soil from winter erosion and leaching of nutrients, and helps to keep the Living Soil Web active throughout the garden rest period.
I have received a lot of comments and questions about why the Rhubarb plants are grown in the fire rings. There is a separate video on how and why I moved the Rhubarb plants into those fire rings, but the basic reason is because we have such heavy clay soil that the Rhubarb tended to stay too wet for long period of time and developed Crown Rot. By raising the Rhubarb one foot off of the ground by putting them into the fire rings I have been able to totally eliminate the loss of any plants to Crown Rot.
