@@frankdotyjr Hello. I have only passed through Westport, don't know it too well. I was searching for the Rideau Trail in that area a long time ago without much success. I live in northeastern Ontario north of Lake Huron in an old uranium mining town turned into a retirement community. This area is all wilderness and low population density so it's an ideal place for my woodland interests.

Frank, I wish you all the best! No matter what happens don’t quit! I hope to follow you on this journey when I retire! I’m in New Jersey and can tell you the NJ section is very underrated. Its so beautiful! I recommend staying at the Mohican outdoor center, about 11 miles north of the Delaware water gap. Simple campground but with showers and hot food only like .2 miles off the trail. Also check out Crater lake (good stealth camp site).

Hi Frank, Go for it! My wife and I hiked the southern half from Springer to Maryland (ran out of time) in 21 at the ages of 63 (me) and 59 (my wife). We hope to finish it in the next few years time allowing. We will be following you. God bless you. Just a note on the last few days of the trail we made a list of what worked (for us) and what we will do different next time. We would be happy to email it to you if you like. Take care and happy hiking Ed (salty) and Pam (sweet) PS We ran into Rumbles and No Filter somewhere down south during our hike.

Hi Salty & Sweet!! 1st, Thank you for following my channel and journey!! I truly do appreciate it, and I'm humbled by the sheer number of people wanting to follow this journey. I though maybe 30 or 40 people would be interested, but going on 1100 subscribers now is nothing I had thought!! I'm sure you'll both complete your dream if you're still watching everybody out here. It's very contagious!!! I had to wait 18 years from my first thought of it after watching a documentary on the AT. OK...I'm very jealous of the fact that you got to meet Dave & Joe on the trail!!! They're just 2 amazing guys my age that I honestly look up to. I followed them last year on the PCT, and plan to do the PCT in 2025 because of all the vlogging and scenery they showed on their hike!! Truly a beautiful part of our country!! Anyways, this is running long so let me just say Thank You both again and I hope we get to chat along my journey!! Peace!! 😎👍✌

I've always wanted to hike the AT since I saw a Discovery show on it about 15 years ago. I now have the time, energy and encouragement from my wife to chase that dream. The PCT is still a dream as well!! Do you know the 2 guys currently on the PCT that go by the name of "Hiking with the Codgers"? Check out their page if you haven't yet. Your hiking credentials are rather impressive and your advise will be well heeded. It's the same advise I got from a few guys that I followed this year, who completed their thru hikes this year as well. I hope to hear from your during my hike and will always welcome advise and encouragement. Thank you James

I haven't ordered that subsciption yet, but will in January. It's great to see so many people our age going out in 2024!!! As for cold weather advise, my very 1st advise to anyone is "use multiple light layer" so you can adjust. I'm personally going to be using Merino Wool for base layer, mid layer, and socks. Layering is the cold secret...shhhh. don't tell anybody I told ya...lol!! Hope to catch up with you on the trail Mike!! 😎👍✌️

Hey James...Greetings to my awesome North neighbor!! I'm glad to hear you're getting back into the game! It took me 2 years of planning and gear research / collecting to get to where I am. I've gotten more responses from people of our age than from the "youngsters", but all ages are responding to my announcement. This dream of completing the AT almost didn't get out of the "dream" stage until my wife and I had a random conversation about what I wanted to do next since I'd already completed the high altitude climb of Mt Kilimanjaro. BUT, that's the story for an upcoming vlog so that others can believe in their dreams. I will encourage you to keep both eyes on your dream / plan for the AT. Thank you for subscribing and hopefully we'll be chatting, as part of my "AT Virtual Tramily" starting in Feb 2024!! 😎✌👍

Right off the bat I can see I’m going to follow your you tube posts with interest. I’m a 77 year old male who had been walking 4-6 miles a day six days a week for 30 years. the last three years I bumped it up to six miles a day carrying a 20-25 pound back pack. I always had normal EKG’s. My weight was around 140; HR in the low 40’s; BP around 110. I had no cardiac symptoms. When I was toying with a month long hike I went to a cardiologist practice actually because I was the only guy in my retiree lunch group who did not have a cardiologist I piqued their interest and a nuclear stress test was ordered (might have that name wrong). Long story short I had five arteries so blocked that they could not even place stents and I had a quintuple bypass in February. of this year. Recovery was swift. The insurance company authorized four weeks of in home occcupational therapy; physical therapy and visiting nurse visits each three times a week. the occupational therapist came once and said I didn’t need her. The physical therapist came four times and said I didn’t need her. The nurse hung in there for five visits. Then, I was authorized 8 weeks of cardiac rehab and they gave me the boot after four. In Post op cardiologist visits with two of the doctors in the practice they both said recovery was swift because I was in such good shape. I said ‘then what the hall am I doing here?’. they said ‘genetics’. So I guess I should have chosen my parents more carefully. lol. Anyway; the reason I’m writing all this is because I imagine your audience will be full of older people like me so I’m hoping some of them will get checked out even if they have no symptoms. I’m now back to walking 7 1/2 miles with my back pack six days a week. Good luck. PS. it was nice to hear your plans with no annoying music playing. Music playing on these videos while people are talking is a pet peeve of mine.

@exbankerbob1 I could NOT have said your message better than you already have. Heart and cholesterol issues ran heavy on my father's side of the family. He was a tall strong man that gave no symptoms of any issues....until the 1st heart attack in his early 50's. Personally I follow my mother's side of the family health tree which tenders toward long life, my great grandmother lived to 103, and I've been physically active all of my life. Hunting, fishing, camping, scouts, long distance swimming, and since Covid closed the public gyms, the wife and I have installed a Tonal gym system in the house. I did have an opportunity in 2015 to undergo a physical stress test much like you described. My long term personal physician/flight medical doctor asked me to take one just before my climb on Mt Kilimanjaro. I had little concerned about it and ended up passing it w/ flying colors and got to see my own heart pumping during the ultrasound test afterwards!!! As my audience on youtube, my analytics are showing that the vast majority of my current 220+ followers are 60+ years of age. I do have several younger people, but the majority are our age. I'm truly glad to hear your experience has gotten much better, and I have a lot of respect for anybody that pulls themselves back into the game after what you and my father have gone through. Last year, 13Sept2022, I did a section hike, from Sam's Gap to Big Bald. I took one of those cheap little HF rigs that I bought from Ali espress, made and took a neat light weight, Half Wave End Fed with me., but I never set it up to use it. Long story short, by the time I got to Big Bald, and back to where I planned to camp, I was too tired to worry about radio. I was thinking about going back up there, after the first of the year. If I can get synced with you, maybe I can bring a handheld, and you can get a QSO from the top of Big Bald. You should be able to hit the repeater on Mount Mitchel from up there. Now that would make for some very cool video! That way, you can make a contact or two, and not have to worry about the weight. And I get to do my Section Hike. Food for thought! @@frankdotyjr

On the other hand, I am usually experiencing pain of some sort almost exclusively joint issues due mostly to osteoarthritis. If I had just one piece of advice it would be go as light as possible. It will make a tremendous difference in pressure on joints. I am wondering if the Appalachian Mountain Club still has the NTO group. NTO is an acronym for Not too old, never tired out

Hello Frank! I am happy to hear that you are going to make your attempt on the AT next February. It has been a dream of mine for years to do the same thing, but for health issues, Peripheral Neuropathy of the lower legs and feet, it is not possible to complete the entire trail. I am somewhat local to you living in Endicott, NY. and about the same age as you, being 69. I hike portions of the FLT just to keep into hiking as it is my passion. My hope is that possibly in the future, section hiking the New York section of the AT. I follow many vloggers both NOBO and SOBO and let them be my legs. I hope the best for you, and I will definitely follow you on your training routines and your journey. The best of luck to you!

Hello!! Good to meet a "neighbor" from the home state. I'm quite familiar w/ Endicott because of the "air freight" business here in Rochester. I believe the company name down there was Escalator Handrail, and we shipped worldwide for them almost every night. I'm glad to hear that you don't let your physical issue completely stop your journey. Thank you for your support of my journey by following me!! It's truly appreciated, and like a few other guys I followed last year, Pat Townsend, BigWillyDog, and Vegas, you'll be a big part of my "VT". It's a term that Vegas coined while talking with me just after he completed his 2023 thru-hike this year. VT, or "Virtual Tramily" provide a huge amount of support mentally for a thru-hiker. Thank you for being part of my VT!! 👍✌😎

Hi Frank! Yes, will be glad to be part of your "VT!" One of our common friends/vlogger is Taylor from Nahamsha. She is one of the best and see she is out finishing her last 200 miles now. Will keep in touch and will post on your videos!

Also for overall gear reviews, especially not to overspend where you don't need to and keep that pack weight down, Eric Hansen, Justin Outdoors, and MyLifeOutdoors (favorite) are great resources who have used and reviewed a ton of equipment.

Hi Brooke! Great to hear your point of view! I'm a big fan of GGG and ChickenTamper Gear as up and coming gear suppliers at very reasonable prices. You'll get to see them "up front" on my gear list video when I complete it. Weight and cost are 2 things we want to keep down w/o sacrificing safety and reliability!

That is an extremely aggressive plan Frank. Have you done a lot of serious distance hiking climbing hills?

Hi Owen! I'm not sure what you mean by "extremely aggressive", but my first step into the distance/hiking/high altitude treking was the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2015. 19,341' without supplimental oxygen. 6 days up and 2 days down. I'm quite comfortable under that kind of stress and strain, so I guess you could call it extreme. Honestly my wife is asking if we can do the PCT next year. I hope you follow along and stay in touch during my trek next year!! Peace!! 😎👍✌️

@@owenbrown5807 OK...you might have me there! lolol I'll concede that 4.5 will be pushing it just a bit. The downhill rush descent was how I got injured on Kilimanjaro, but I've learned a new downhill walking technique, that I shared on another video, that really does work and will help on the AT. Thanks for subscribing Owen, and I hope we keep up these conversations on my journey! I'm hoping to have a solid base of people in my "Virtual Tramily" Peace 😎👍✌

Looking forward to following your 2024 NOBO thru-hike on the AT. Here are a couple of KZfaq channels of other "mature gentlemen" and their AT thru-hikes that might interest you: Englishman Just Walking (2023) and Old Man and the AT (2022) [channel recently renamed Old Man and the Sea].

My question is - why a February start? I'm aware of the up sides (no crowds, done before the bugs and humidity get really bad) but I would worry about snow that first month or so.

Hi Tory! Welcome to my channel and my journey. Your question is one I get most often and is easy for me to answer. I live in upstate New York and the guys in my family always planned the annual winter hunting trips to the Adirondack Mountains during the winters. That area of New York was always very frigid and I learned outdoor survival skills quickly from my father. On 1 one of those trips in 1969 I became separated from the other 3 people in the hunting party and ended up spending the night outdoors along in the mountains. The skills my father taught me came in very handy that night and I discovered that proper preparation was the key to that success. I found my way out of the woods the next morning at daylight and caught up to the family for a warm breakfast. So....southern winters are not really my big concern for next year. Is the AT in your near future?
I Told You I'd Be Back.....lolol !!
