The year has been off to a very rocky start but full of growth and new insights and transformation (and a whole new studio setup) so it's turned from a tough time to a very exciting one.
In this update I talk about the changes in content coming for the channel as well as the increased emphasis on Patreon. I also reflect on the various reflections and insights of the year so far.

🐟 03. WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, & TRUTH: PHILOSOPHY DEFINED: Philosophy is the love of WISDOM, normally encapsulated within a formal academic discipline. Wisdom is the soundness of an action or a decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, insight, and good judgement. Wisdom may also be described as the body of knowledge and principles that develops within a specified society or period. For example, “The wisdom of the Tibetan lamas.” Etymologically, the word originates from the Greek “philosophia” (meaning “love of wisdom”) and is the systematized study of general and fundamental questions, such as those about existence, reason, knowledge, values/ethics, mind, and language. Some sources claim the term was coined by Pythagoras (c. 570 - c. 495 BC). Philosophical methods include questioning, critical discussion, rational argument, and systematic presentation. Philosophers generally divide their field into the two kingdoms, the Eastern branch, which covers the entire Asian continent, and the Western branch of philosophy, which mainly includes European, though in recent centuries, embraces American and Australian-born philosophers also. GENUINE WISDOM: Unfortunately, in most cases in which this term is used, particularly outside of ancient Indian philosophical traditions, it tacitly or implicitly refers to ideas and ideologies that are quite far-removed from genuine wisdom. For instance, the typical academic philosopher, especially in the Western tradition, is not a lover of actual wisdom, but a believer in, or at least a practitioner of, adharma, which is the ANTITHESIS of genuine wisdom. Many Western academic (so-called) “philosophers” are notorious for using laborious sophistry, abstruse semantics, gobbledygook, and/or pseudo-intellectual word-play, in an attempt to justify their blatantly-immoral ideologies and practices, and in many cases, fooling the ignorant layman into accepting the most horrendous crimes as not only normal and natural, but holy and righteous! In “The Republic” the ancient Greek philosopher Aristocles (commonly known as Plato) quotes his mentor Socrates as asserting that the “best” philosophers are, in actual fact, naught but useless, utter rogues, in stark contrast to “true” philosophers, who are lovers of wisdom and truth. An ideal philosopher, on the other hand, is one who is sufficiently intelligent to understand that morality is, of necessity, based on the law of non-violence (“ahiṃsā”, in Sanskrit), and sufficiently wise to live his or her life in such a harmless manner. See Chapter 12 regarding morality. THE REPOSITORY OF WISDOM: One of the greatest misunderstandings of modern times is the belief that philosophers (and psychologists, especially) are, effectively, the substitutes for the priesthood of old. It is perhaps understandable that this misconception has arisen in the popular mind, because the typical priest/monk/rabbi/mullah seems to be an unschooled buffoon, compared with those highly-educated gentlemen who have attained collegiate doctorates in philosophy, psychology, psychiatry, et cetera. However, as mentioned in more than a few places in this book, it is imperative to understand that only a miniscule percentage of all those who claim to be spiritual teachers are ACTUAL “brāhmaṇa” (as defined in Chapter 20). Therefore, the wisest philosophers of the present age are still those exceptionally rare members of the Holy Priesthood! Anyone who doubts this averment need do nothing more than read the remaining chapters of this Holy Scripture in order to learn this blatantly-obvious fact. POPULAR PHILOSOPHERS: At the very moment these words of mine are being typed on my laptop computer, there are probably hundreds of essay papers, as well as books and articles, being composed by professional philosophers and Theologians, both within and without academia. None of these papers, and almost none of the papers written in the past, will have any noticeable impact on human society, at least not in the realm of morals and ethics, which is obviously the most vital component of civilization. And, as mentioned in a previous paragraph, since such “lovers-of-wisdom” are almost exclusively adharmic (irreligious and corrupt) it is indeed FORTUITOUS that this is the case! The only (so-called) philosophers who seem to have any perceptible influence in the public arena are “pop” or “armchair” philosophers, such as Mrs. Alisa “Alice” O’Connor (known more popularly by her pen name, Ayn Rand), and the British author, Mr. Clive Staples “C.S.” Lewis, almost definitely due to the fact that they have published well-liked books and/or they have managed to promulgate their ideas via the mass media, especially on the World Wide Web. ACADEMIC PHILOSOPHERS: To proffer merely one example of literally tens of thousands, of the assertion made in the previous paragraph, the 1905 essay paper by the famed British mathematician, philosopher and logician, Bertrand Russell, entitled “On Denoting” was described by one of his most notable contemporaneous colleagues, Frank P. Ramsey, as “that paradigm of philosophy”. Notwithstanding the fact that less than one percent of the populace would be able to even comprehend the essay, it is littered with spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntactic errors, and contains at least a couple of flawed propositions. Even if the average person was able to grasp the principles presented in that paper, it would not make any tangible impact on the human condition. Currently, this planet of ours is doomed to devastation, due to moral decay and environmental degradation, and such overintellectualizing essay papers can do nothing to help improve our deeply harrowing, frightful, and lamentable predicament, especially those papers that deal with exceedingly-trivial subject matters, as does Russell’s paper (an argument for an acutely-abstruse concept in semantics). The fact that Russell’s aforementioned essay paper falls under the category of Philosophy of Language, and the fact that he was a highly-cultured peer of the House of Lords, in the parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, yet his own writings being composed using far-from-perfect English, serves only to prove my assertion that philosophy ought to be restricted to genuine members of the Holy Priesthood. Furthermore, that Bertrand was fully intoxicated with adharmic (leftist) ideologies and practices, including sexual licentiousness and socialism (even supporting Herr Adolf Hitler’s Nazism, to some extent) indicates that he was no lover of ACTUAL wisdom. The fact that, after THOUSANDS of years following the publication of Plato’s “Republic”, not a single nation or a single country on this planet has thought it wise to accept Plato’s advice to promote a philosopher-king (“rāja-ṛṣi”, in Sanskrit) as the head of its social structure, more than adequately proves my previous assertions. Unfortunately, however, both Plato and his student, Aristotle, were themselves hardly paragons of virtue, since the former was an advocate of infanticide, whilst the latter favoured carnism (even stating that animal slaughter was mandatory). To my knowledge, the only philosopher in the Western academic tradition who was truly wise, was the German, Arthur Schopenhauer, since he espoused a reasonably accurate metaphysical position, as well as adhering to the law (that is, the one and only law, known as “dharma” in Bhārata) to a larger degree than most other Westerners. Hopefully, someday, I will discover another philosopher without India, to join Arthur! A CASE STUDY: Because there are literally tens of thousands of academic “philosophers” who adhere to the above misconception of what is an ACTUAL philosopher, I am loath to nominate a single person of whom to make mention. However, because the former University of Oxford scholar, Mr. Colin McGinn, claims to be the “best” philosopher in the history of humanity (a claim he has repeatedly made on his own website), I therefore have no reservations about using that fool as an ideal example for my position in relation to academic “philosophers”. In order to preface this case study, it should be noted that Mr. McGinn’s area of expertise is in the philosophy of mind, and he has written extensively on the subject. However, near the beginning of a videographed dialogue posted on the Internet, Colin admitted that he was unable to even proffer a cogent definition of the word “mind”! The fact that Colin garnered a Master of Arts degree in psychology from a prominent English university did not seem to help with his understanding of the mind, despite the fact that psychology is concerned entirely with the psyche! I am quite certain that there are several teenagers in Bhārata (India) who understand the topic more clearly than Mister McGinn, since they have been trained in Vedānta (see that Glossary entry). In fact, there is very little doubt in my mind that my precocious second daughter, Sītā Anna, would have much more fully understood the concepts of mind and consciousness by the time she had reached the age of TEN years, had she not been (effectively) kidnapped by a devilishly-wicked, evil, demonic, violent criminal organization known as the “Federal Government of Australia”. With the barrage of shorts, reels, and TikToks frying peoples’ brains, people are using KZfaq as a way to connect with people and go deeper into relationships with the content creator. People will watch the channel because of you and the intricacies you bring into presenting philosophy. Keep up the good work

Thank you for your insightful work of integrity. I’m on the same path of independence perhaps construed as dilettantism. I do think it’s important to be critical of oneself and all ideas. However, as Mark Fisher said it, in times of complacency it’s worth being an outcast and remaining sane. As long as one steers clear of easy solutions and succumbing to capture, I think the path stays true. Wishing you nothing but the best. PS: I couldn’t find the video of contrapoints you referenced of her explaining why she left academia. I would appreciate a title or link to it. 🙏

I deeply resonate with the shift of presence on camera when sharing from a core heart, full of novelty compared to mechanical mind with congestive structure. I’ve had my channel a year - researching books and sharing based on personal healing, client work and put simply, to the best of my ability but I got burnt out without play. It made me miss me. This video was helpful and inspiring. Thank you for your hard work and honesty.

Your channel is one of my favorite channels on KZfaq, I really loved the why it matters videos and am excited for a return and maybe expansion of that concept! I definitely repeated with your discussion of "academicness" and the way rigor can manifest sterility. When I studied philosophy in college I felt like we didn't get a structured opportunity to make philosophy or to bring the ideas we were studying to life and applying them to our social, political, spiritual environment, and appreciated how that was a part of your channel! Looking forward to the future! Keep doing your thing

I heard this quote in a comedy, where the context is that this 6 year old girl comes up with really deep sayings, but in my experience it really does apply. "Through pain comes growth". Throughout the 30 years I've been alive, I've had peaks and troughs, and no doubt I will continue to experience high and low moods. But once I pull myself out of a low mood, I usually come out of it with some new insight or new knowledge/experience that helps me understand myself a bit better. While it obviously sucks that you have had to go through some struggles, at least I'm glad that you've gained something from those experiences and I look forward to engaging with your new, more "up front, genuine and authentic" style. It is a brave decision in the current algorithm-driven environment to actively make stuff that is not algorithm-friendly but that taps into what you really want to do.

I definitely know what you mean as far as wanting to escape the sterile, soulless form of philosophy that’s taken hold since the field became professionalized (recently tweeted a biting take on contemporary philosophy myself addressing this lmao) & I’m happy you’re Stepping back from the academia-approved approach. Not for nothing, the Peterson + Foucault w/why it matters videos were my intro to the channel & what made me subscribe. I’ll be checking out the Patreon. Every thinker/searcher for knowledge, when measured by various perspectives, is going to find one where there is an imposter accusation. That kind of negative feedback (about being called a fraud) is unavoidable in the wider world. But it’s important to keep in mind that everyone is an imposter from some perspective. And that includes those who make the imposter accusation. They almost certainly are imposters themselves. * Good luck with the channel. I’ve enjoyed it.

It’s amazing hearing the story of your journey. I’ve recently started my own arts/philosophy channel only a few months ago and I’ve often leant into your teachings as a first port of call for my research. But, like you, I’ve also been dealing with demons. Crisis of confidence, concerns that my philosophical meditations will be interrupted by the grind of KZfaq - waves and waves of imposter syndrome. So it’s very comforting to hear how those battles have unfolded for others. Especially when I consider that person an established professional. I think a lean into the playful will be great, and anything that is healthy for you will inevitably be healthy for the channel. Much love ❤ and looking forward to your new year 👍

Often they take a topic I'm reasonably familiar with but completely subvert the angle or argument which is truly refreshing. The content is top quality, just keep doing what you're doing. Also the review of Contrapoints is bang on - her videos are truly masterful. It's a shame that she took down some of her early videos as they are some of her most innovative in style and humour. Not sure if you have considered it, but I would love to see an in depth analysis and response to a Contrapoint's piece. I think you could absolutely do it justice and would be a great watch.

It's an odd one. I definitely am not sure enough to make a video about them but then they are the ones that I love the most so it's hard. Ethical conundrums. Feedback appreciated. I think the channel update kind of necessitated a bit more and full talking head but on the other hand the departure from a script ended up adding a lot more length than I expected. That happened with the next one as well so I'm curious to learn if that's just this update type of content or whether that's liable to happen with regular episodes as well. All course corrections to be made but certainly won't be making ones this long so regularly

You are an extraordinary individual with a brilliant mind and I believe many can benefit from your perspective for you aren't just explaining existing concepts but also bringing yourself into it and drawing the necessary connections to our place in spacetime. The academic perspective is very much necessary, but the true value of philosophy is the application of it when it's most needed...

I must admit I was a little disappointed that the Dionysian's don't even get a bottle of wine as a thank you, let alone some kind of crazed sex party with all the members hanging out. I don't want to labour the point, but Dionysian level on J.P.'s patreon you get a one on one thrashing with a vacuum cleaner lead. Money well spent. 43:15 There is a point where you talk about Peterson and Brand being reduced to their worst elements (paraphrase), but there is a reason they have an appeal and it is really more to the point that certain aspects of society don't get addressed. For example, in many arguments of Feminism in the 1990s, there was a huge push from trying to bring women's rights to on par with men's rights towards a "we don't need men" kind of argument and as a result, masculinity has really been seen more and more as a problem with society rather than as a part of the puzzle. One of the results of this, as I noticed about the mid-2010s was that Putin had a fan club in the US, where he was seen as embracing his masculinity and there was an element that was willing to ignore many of the bad aspects of Putin in favor of the part of the argument that was getting ignored or oftentimes attacked. There does need to be a place where people can have honest conversations and liberal debate without it coming to the point of physical threats. Perhaps after Twitter's demise, KZfaq is moving in that direction. Plus with all of the censorship moving in one direction, it seems that Pateron might be the better engine. Just a thought...

I appreciate your insights and know that they are important. That's why I tossed some of my money into the ring. :) BTW... be yourself, whichever direction you want to go. Would you consider a format that features you in a Q&A with "a regular Joe?" (1.You pick/describe a topic, 2. they ask questions, 3. you answer them.) :D

Thanks for the support bryan. I have thought about the Q&A format actually or rather it's been suggested to me by friends since they find in podcasts when I have to get into explaining things to people who aren't familiar with them it becomes more interesting and relateable. Something to think about!

Hey man I really loved this video and could relate to it in a lot of ways. I also have a lot of anxiety about getting things right, appearing scholarly, and not making mistakes. In many ways as a content creator in this field we have a responsibility to do the best we can and obviously not intentionally lie. That being said, I try to remind myself that I'm not an academic, and more importantly, I'm a human being. I'm destined to make mistakes and slip up, but I learn from those mistakes and like to remind my audience that I'm not a professor and I'm a student just like then. I also highly value my audiences input so it's less of a lecture and more of a discussion. I've probably learned more from then that they have from me lol. I also admire your decision to take down that video that was garnering very negative comments and interactions. Although we obviously aren't fully in control, we do have some say over the audience we decide to foster. Maybe I'm just too anxious, but I've steered clear of political philosophy or controversial issues that may garner lots of views but perhaps not the audience I'm looking for. It's healthy to grow an audience that is calm cool and collective, and I think your decision is in that right direction. In terms of being philosophically homeless, that's one of the reasons I've gravitated towards pragmatism. It's simply a way of looking at different philosophies and doesn't block you off from exploring different and conflicting philosophies. Best of luck to you and I'm excited for the future of your channel!

I say this with the best of intentions as a semi loyal follower. 1) You are not Ni dom. you are an ENTP. 2) Few people can handle looking at the screen for a long period of time looking at a single person speaking. without graphics/pictures is even worse. 3) Your geeky side would be more appreciated when it emerges naturally, and to emerge it naturally it needs a dialogue. 4) As a side note. to reference the good mythical morning channel, where two very close friends sit there and act stupidly to entertain the millions. I know that what they are performing there is far from what you are aiming at, but i think their format shouldn't. you mentioned inner revolution a couple of times, so maybe you need an outer one.

I don't know, i think daring to open up subjects that are dangerous or polarising can really add to the picture in a way that staying too safe or measurered cant. So videos like Jung and anti-Semiticism and postmodernism and age of consent (although provocative), can be some of the more fruitful ones. Unfortunately the way KZfaq is structured these days its becoming increasingly more difficult to engage with such ideas. So other formats are probably better. James, i think your unwillingness to engage in demonisation (left or right), safeguards you against reverting to some kind of tribal affiliation and allows the content to be about growth and exploration.
@TheLivingPhilosophy
@TheLivingPhilosophy 2 ай бұрын
Ach I appreciate that michael but I'm just not sure. But maybe that uncertainty is something Peterson lacked. There's just something very humbling in his example and how far he has gone astray. As for the polarising subjects I agree and think that it's important to have those conversations but (and I reflect on this in the next episode) it requires the right container - free speech isn't merely a question of legality but of the right conditions for fruitful discourse. KZfaq can be that sometimes but sometimes it really isn't and that's part of the haphazard nature of things

@@TheLivingPhilosophy I watched the countra-points Peterson video, very entertaining and I agreed with a lot, especially at how 'Postmodern Marxist' is a contradiction in terms and displays a lack of understanding about the divisions within the left. But a one dimensional cartoonish enemy is always more useful than a nuanced one. Speaking of enemies, I noticed a lot of the people you mentioned you liked are probably at loggerheads with each other, but again I think that's really healthy. McGilchrist for example mentioned that he was quite fond of Douglas Murray, the Captain Murray in the culture wars who makes regular appearances on sky which I occasionally check in to and he's even a bit much for me.. Almost in the Hicks, Peterson, Lindsay camp. I haven't felt too drawn to places like countra-points, I guess in many respects I'm team terf on various issues.. but haven't really dug into it.

@@michaelmcclure3383 haha yeah that's a gem that was my first encounter with her as well. There is certainly a lot of loggerheads among the people I like and I'm very okay with that. I can see a lot of value in different individuals and still critique parts of them. I have a fondness for some of Murray but definitely he's become a bit cringy (to my mind anyway) with the whole Israel/Gaza affair. And McGilchrist definitely fits more on that side of things culture wars-wise - I still think he has a big blindspot with the postmodern but it's critical to his thesis that this leftism be wrong. Maybe something change in The Mattter With Things I'll be curious to find out. Nevertheless there's so much value there that I have a lot of love and respect for the man and his work
@michaelmcclure3383
@michaelmcclure3383 2 ай бұрын
@@TheLivingPhilosophy I think that's a mature insight, to see that there is great value, even if there might be the odd blindspot, or bias. Thats something missing in the culture wars where easy dismissal on the basis of one comment or opinion (usually taken out of context), is the order of the day and where there is little questioning of ones tribal affiliations and assumptions. In many respects I agree with McGilchrist on the toxicity of woke, especially it's tight control of humour and its lack of nuance. He mentioned how the research shows that the left hemisphere is more prone to anger, narcissism and delusions of all kinds. It's more inclined to feel virtuous merely for holding a particular view (engaging anger and narcissism to expound it), whereas it's the right hemisphere that is actually capable of a compassionate response, because its interested in what's really going on and how individuals can best be served according to their particular situation.. Maybe this gets back to the previous discussion on virtue, it certainly reminds me of Lao Tzu The man of superior virtue is not [conscious of] his virtue, And in this way he really possesses virtue. The man of inferior virtue never loses [sight of] his virtue, And in this way he loses his virtue I guess we are all still growing and learning (or unlearning) no matter how enlightened haha He says another fascinating thing. He says the left hemisphere is about reorienting ourselves to beauty, goodness, truth whereas the right is primarily concerned with grasping power. If true, this would have various philosophical implications. Ultimately both hemispheres have to work together, it's the imbalance that's unhealthy.
@TheLivingPhilosophy
@TheLivingPhilosophy 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Though I have come to doubt McGilchrist a little here as well - Contrapoints for example is one of the funniest creators I've ever encountered; same goes for Bo Burnham who certainly skews left. Meanwhile Ben Shapiro is not somebody I associate with humour nor Peterson. Perhaps the closer you are to the frontlines the more prone you are to moralism and maybe we might want to question the assumption that the new left is inherently humourless and prudish. Just a thought based on recent ruminations

One creator in the philosophy domain that could be helpful to check is a man called Andrew Tate. He is Top G and goes to bed with lots of women. While I'm not suggesting that is the best way to explore concepts, I am interested in seeing how liminal spaces are interpreted at 200 miles an hour in a Bugatti. Most of all, I feel that Minister Eamon Ryan looks like a Harkonnen from Dune wearing a wig. Is that hate speech? Love the channel and looking forward to where you take it. Here are some things Jesus Christ said of Himself. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” John 14:6 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son." John 3:18 Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. Matthew 16:13-17 Skeptics said for centuries, "The bible we have now has been corrupted through the years.". In 1947 the Dead Sea Scrolls were found and proved otherwise. They said, "There's no way Israel can become a nation again as God promised in preparation for the end times.". Israel became a nation again in 1948. All this being said, it does require faith to believe. Hebrews 11:6 tells us, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Also John 20:27-29 states, "Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Don't be deceived, Jesus is the Son of God and the only way of being saved from God's judgement for our sin. Christ consciousness won't save you. Believing Jesus was an ascended master, a prophet or a good teacher won't save you. Romans 10:9 tells us how to be saved, "if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved". Trust in Him, He shed his blood and gave His perfect life for you. Call on Him, He loves you, and He hears you.
