What’s this a new beginner-orientated Honda adventure motorcycle for 2024, the NX500… wait a minute that’s just the CB500X! Ok, so it’s not just a name change. We’re seeing some updates also helping the NX500 stand out and further refining what used to be the CB500X.
So let’s look at the updates. That 471 cc engine is mechanically unchanged, and produces 35 kW and 43 Nm of torque, with fuel consumption of 3.6L per 100 km. That’s not the end of the story there though, with new PGM-FI, or fuel injection settings which Honda tell us improve low rpm acceleration and power delivery overall. We also see the adoption of the Honda Selectable Torque Control system, which is a special way of saying traction control. There’s also a slipper clutch, but that’s not new.
There’s also a new five-inch TFT, that comes from the XL750 Transalp, with customisable display, and IOS/Android connectivity thanks to Honda RoadSync. For controlling that, there’s also a simplified switchblock with backlit four-way toggle on the left handlebar.
LED headlight and taillight are also both updated and new.
The chassis is mainly the same, although the 41 Showa Separate Function Big Piston USD forks and rear monoshock get some tweaks to the settings, specifically spring rates and damping settings, although there’s only preload adjustment at the rear, meaning they need to be a one-size fits all solution. Travel is on the shorter end of things for an adventure at 135 mm at each end.
The wheels do however boast a significant change, sheeding 1.5 kg between them, or 800 g front and 700 g rear, reducing unsprung weight, where it really matters. They remain a 19 front and 17 inch rear but are now five-spoke, instead of seven-spoke. Tyres are a 110/80 front and 160/60 rear for reference.
Nissin continue to provide the dual front brake system with 296 mm rotors and axial mount two-piston calipers. The rear runs a 240 mm rotor and single-pot caliper.
The NX500 now weighs in at 196 kg, with 180 mm of ground clearance, and Honda boast a range of up to 480 km. Seat height is also a relatively tall 830 mm.

I think it’s a fairly good move from Honda. ADV is the new boom market, and older returning riders are a big source of bike purchases. To have bikes “returning” from the past, is a smart option, everyone (including myself), complaints about not having WP APEX or ohlins suspension on these bikes, but then we’d kick up a stink if the price went up 2 grand to pay for it 😂😂 It’s a Honda, they’ll sell truckloads. I’ll sell my 2022 500X for one when they become available here in Australia

Yea the top end suspenders would be great, until we had to pay for them! There's some big appeal with the nostalgia too.

I don't understand why Honda won't make a version of this bike with long travel suspension and 21-inch/18-inch wheels. They'd sell every one.
@MotoJournoKris

I reckon they figured the Transalp covers that base, without there being too much overlap with this bike. Although obviously there's a big price difference between the two. Seems like a strategic decision, force people to pick a NX500, or upgrade all the way up to the XL750 Transalp.

@@MotoJournoKris Maybe, but even the TA could use another version with more suspension travel. I'd like Honda to do for the NX500 and the TA what they did for the Africa Twin. One version that's more road oriented, and one that's more offroad oriented. But hey, that's just my dream.

Why would they call it Transalp? The Transalp already exists. The name NX500 has historical reasons (as does the Transalp name!) and comes from the 1988 Honda NX650, a.k.a Dominator. The NX650 was produced until 2003. There was also an NX250 and a 125 cc NX om some markets. I would have loved the NX500 to weigh
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 6 ай бұрын
That's kind of the point though isn't it? The new NX500 seems more like a Transalp than an NX. A 150 kg dual-sport would seem more in line with the NX designation. Maybe I'm over thinking it though.
@IngOehman
@IngOehman 6 ай бұрын
You’re right of coarse, it is the same cathegory as the Africa and the Transalp, but does that mean that Honda should use those names for different motorcycles? I don’t think they should share names. So I see the logic in calling it NX500. But I think it should have been lighter AND smaller. Like the NX250 from early 90s. There are so many full size light weight “enduro-like” bikes. What the world need is a small one! Not everyone is a 6’ man. The NX250 had a very nice 19”/16” wheel combination, ans the weight was about 120 kg. Sure a 500 would be heavier, like 140 kg. And that would be just fine! That would be a great NX500!
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 6 ай бұрын
100%, I struggle to understand why we aren't seeing more of those significantly lighter machines, as there's definitely people keen for something lighter and more manageable, and a 250/500 option like you mentioned would cover a lot of riders. @@IngOehman

I think it's a welcome change for the better. Ground clearance is still a little lackluster, but overall I think they've done a pretty good job and mostly the improvements that needed have been made , Just a few more tweaks and she'll be there. Hopefully she'll be under 10 grand. That would be nice, that price point seems to be entry level adventure for the bigger brands. However. CF Moto seem to have a better proposition at this point for around that 10 grand mark, I think that this comes in that somewhere between 11:00 and 12:00. It may be too much compared to what else is on offer

@@dragoclarke9497 Yes i get where your coming from i have owned a lot of Hondas in my time, and the reliability is right up there, but its a different game these day's mate, even Honda spreads out there manufacturing these days to factories located in Japan, the United States , Canada, China, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Brazil, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Turkey, Argentina, Mexico, Taiwan, and the Philippines. CF Moto doesn't need to do this yet, and as long as the build quality and warranty are decent in AU i will definitely consider it, just my opinion of course.

Fuel efficency is great. I think it looks worse, dont like the new model code, price is too high now and the transalp 750 is not much heavier with proper performance. Should have been make cheaper £5900 but they are £6700
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 7 ай бұрын
Yep, I think price-wise they're too close to the Transalp, where most of the 500 and 650 machines could do with a price drop if they aren't the newest gen models, which generally run electronics and upgraded suspension. There's a bit of a weird situation there where much newer bikes are priced the same as those machines and it's a harsh comparison if you're just looking at value and what's on offer.

I would think so, should handle 160 kg+ combined weight fairly well even at highway speeds. You won't get the bigger bike effortless performance, but more than enough for normal use to cruise at 110-120 km/h. Seat height is roomy, seat to peg ratio probably comes down to preference.

It’s a pretty curious rebrand given the cb500x sold so well it was a be liable name in itself but I guess someone’s gotta justify their job somewhere lol. But looks as good as the outgoing model. They still really can’t figure out the styling on these after a decade can they? When not just give this and the transalpin the front of an Africa twin and be done with it? Not that it matters really, I’m sure it’ll stay very popular though likely lose some sales in the Dixie obsessed US market to the transalp, but probably a net win for honda

Even shorter version - the NX500 is basically the same as the 2022/2023 CB500X with a better dashboard and uglier front end. I'll stick with my 2022 CB500X, if you don't mind Honda. Honda can be so overly conservative, such a missed opportunity IMHO with this NX500... The new Royal Enfield Himalayan is better value and a better off pavement bike too, making it a proper ADV bargain. The NX500 misses the mark on today's ADV market - not good enough Honda!
