We review the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, a true affordable do everything car. We discuss why this is relevant to buyers and how you can forgive some of the styling and performance. While this may be an appliance, it's the ideal blend of what makes Subaru good. This car competes with the Mazda CX30, Honda HRV, VW Tiguan, Ford Ecosport, and Corolla Cross.

They have flat rear floors, and there is minimal lip, along with a large square hatch so it is easy for the dogs to get in and out. Plus they can see out well, so in general I would say they do like it.

As a crosstrek owner myself, I think part of the appeal of a car like this is that it feels like a car while having the benefits of an SUV. And here in MN, the winter is so much more easy to deal with when you have this and some snow tires

We live in north central WA state high up in the mountains and get 5-7 feet of snow every winter. We have to plow and maintain our private road ourselves. After driving AWD and 4WD Toyota’s for 40+ years we had to put studded snow tires on every winter, but when I bought my wife our first Subaru 2 years ago, we drove her Outback on the factory tires year round until they wore out. Last December (2022) I was looking for a new Forester Touring with the saddle Brown Leather interior. I was looking for either a White, Bronze, Red or Green Forester, but it had to have the Brown interior. I found a 2019 Bronze Forester Touring with the Brown interior and it had only 4,700 miles on it. I asked the salesman if it was 47K miles but indeed it was only 4,700 miles. I got on the computer and it booked out for $38K, but I bought it for $32K. It was a 6 hour round trip to buy it, but saving $6K was worth the 6 hour drive. The only thing I added was pinstripes, mud flaps , bug shield and window vents. I drive only about 7-8K miles a year so I’ll be driving it for years to come. Anyhow the previous owner put Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires on it when it had only 1,300 miles on it. The Cross Climate 2 tires are AWESOME on dry, wet, slushy and snow covered roads. They’re a quiet tire and they don’t take a hit with the mpg. I really recommend these tires for anyone who wants great traction on all road conditions. We like the tires so much that when the factory tires wore out on my wife’s Outback we put the Cross Climate 2 tires on her Subie. I would recommend them for you in MN as well. My brother lives in Portland, OR and he has them on his Outback as well. We recommended them to both of my brothers and sisters in-law who live in MT and they love them on their Outback’s as well. The CrossTrex was a bit too small for my needs and the Outback was too big, but the Forester is perfect for my needs. I’m glad you’re happy with your CrossTrex. We have an older couple who are neighbors and they just bought a Crosstrek and love it. There a 9 families who live on our private road and 6 of us own Subie’s. A little over 35% of all the vehicles in our area are Subaru’s. My Dr is a transplant from the Seattle area and she and her husband are looking for a vehicle to buy for everyday use and to get to our ski resorts in our area. I recommended an Outback XT for them. She even said that they were surprised at how many people own Subie’s around here. I simply told her that there’s a reason for that.

exactly. I have an Outback and I like how it has ground clearance but it's less top heavy than an SUV. It is easy to get into and out of too. I don't have to climb into it or when I am loading it up with groceries or hiking gear, I don't have to lift to high to clear the floor. I attached snow tires to my car and got really nice wipers, I am ready for winter this year

I looked at the CrossTrex before buying my Forester Touring. I liked the car, but it was too small for my needs. I really like my wife’s Outback but it’s too big, again for my needs. My Forester is the first vehicle that I’ve personally owned that I can get my wheelchair in the back without having to lower the rear seat. I Love the height of my seats over the heights of my wife’s Outback. Our 110# Chocolate Lab fits fine in the rear with the seats up or down. My rear seat passengers love the heated rear seats as well. I love the heated steering wheel. Everyone who gets in or sees the saddle Brown leather seats in my Forester LOVES the color and comfort. After buying my Forester, my wife decided that after Subaru redesigned the Forester for 25 with the RAV4 hybrid system, we’ll be selling her Outback and replacing it with the Forester Touring Hybrid so she can use it as her commuter car. It’s really a shame that I had to buy the Touring trim just to get the Brown interior. If the Limited would have been available with the Tan (ivory) leather interior, I would have bought it instead. My wife’s Outback has the Ivory interior and it too is beautiful.

All in 110k miles we’ll never buy another one, it was reliable but what car isn’t for 100k miles that’s Japanese. The motor mounts were going when she traded it off also almost 4 grand in work at that point, even our VW’s are not that bad in that period. Sad what they’ve become.

I like this car. It is affordable, and you can use it in a lot of use cases. Kayaking? Subaru has roof rails that extend and can be put away. Live in a city? The compact size means that it is easy to drive and park. Snowy area? AWD and snow tires mean this thing won't get stuck. Commuting? Very comfortable suspension and decent MPG. While it lacks in horsepower or an engaging ride, it makes it up in a lot of other ways

Love love love my Crosstrek. It replaced a 4Runner, which I also liked, but had horrendous gas mileage. The Crosstrek does much of what my 4Runner could do but with much better gas mileage and maneuverability. Plus driver assist features (lane centering, adaptive cruise) that work great and which I use every time I drive and make for great road tripping. I love it so much that when my first one (2019 Premium) was totalled after a couple of years, I immediately went and bought the exact same car (2021 Premium) and got the nice upgrade that driver assist features were added as standard. A lot of people have said it, but it's a car that does nothing specifically better than other cars but does everything well and is a great car to live with. Especially if you have to deal with weather, dirt roads, and want to have a small car that maximizes interior space and liveability. Plus, it's surprisingly enjoyable to drive, feels very solid and comfortable for its price point, and I've never had anything break on either of mine.

Car bros on KZfaq channels love to dump on the Crosstrek because they are special and "don't drive appliances." Truth is that Impreza/Crosstrek sales over two generations did solid sales numbers in the hundreds of thousands annual for years, and most of those sales were not 2.5l Limited trims which was just a small bit of icing on the sales cake. Remember when most of the cars on the road were practical small cars like the 1.8l Civics and Corollas? People want cars like that, it's practical, it's affordable, it's easy to drive in congested urban areas. The industry keeps pushing bigger and more premium vehicles on the public, but surprise, it turns out that people wanted the same kind of car all along; it's a complete no-brainer why the Crosstrek does well.

I bought a 2018 crosstrek limited in cool gray khaki last year, and it is one of the best cars I’ve driven. Yes the 2.0L is sluggish and you’re not going to win any drag races, but just this car’s ability to do so much and to go outdoors in such a well rounded package is well worth the trade off. I would highly recommend it to anyone who’s on a budget or needs a comfortable and easy to drive daily driver! And amazing review like always!!

I just bought the 2024 premium, as a new Subaru owner I enjoy it, and feel confident behind the steering wheel, from snow or a rainy day. Love the automatic LED headlight which is standard, the turn by turn headlight is pretty cool. The infotainment system is a little weird meaning, you have to turn on Wi-Fi to have Apple CarPlay/android auto. Besides that I don’t see anything else wrong with it. My option was 2024 Crosstrek or the Toyota Corolla cross hybrid, in my area the Toyota was being overpriced than MSRP. And the Subaru dealer was not charging mark up on the Crosstrek even tho I had to wait for the arrival. I still think I made the right choice financially and it has high resale value, can’t forget the reliability. May be a shock to some but I like the 2.o liter engine, for the reason being it’s made in Japan, so I know I’m getting a better build car/ reliable engine.

As an emergency automotive service technician... I absolutely despise the new Subarus that have a start stop system. I have come across so many service calls were cars that have 1500 to 10,000 mi where the battery will be completely drained with no loads left on. Subaru did a software update with the vehicle that you have and then relocated the start stop turn off feature from something that was in a third menu option and they put it straight onto the main part of the touch screen. I have heard that there are several class action lawsuits against Subaru. I even went to a service call yesterday for a person who bought one at CarMax with 9,000 miles battery completely dead no loads left on. I would stay away from any of the new Subarus that have that feature. He ended up driving the car back up to CarMax in returning the car I recommended it CX30 or CX-5 instead. Turn off the start/stop and there's a KZfaqr who adds a switch that you can install behind the overhead light panel that keeps it off if you get annoyed, and it doesn't void warranties. I just test drove this car last night because I'm car shopping for my 21 year old son. I really wanted to like this car. He did not like the Crosstrek at all. The ceiling of the car is very low, and the trunk is very small. There are no air vents in the backseat which is not ok if you live in the south. The trim levels get kind of pricey quick -- close to 40K USD OTD if you add leather seats and a sound package, so be careful. I will say Subaru is great about safety features -- there are a ton. But, I think the controls were almost too much. I guess if you stay with the barebones trim level and use it like a commuter car it would be fine, but that low roof line would be tough for someone even slightly tall. The fabric seats I sat in were hella hot, so I would upgrade to leather. I think if you can spend a little more, get the Forester instead unless you want a small car for parking reasons. I decided to get a Honda CRV Hybrid Sport for my son -- he liked it the best out of everything we looked at. I think it's a better choice for comfort, space, etc.

Back when I was shopping for a 2 row crossover i wanted to like the crosstrek, but the hatch height was compromised compared to the previous escape and other compact CUVs (not big dog friendly). In addition, at the time, pedestrian crossovers such as the Escape and CRV and Rav4 were all below 25 with the escapes being sold midtrim for 21-22, whereas the crosstrek was closer to 25. I couldn't ignore the price at the time, but the times, they have changed. The escape and it's 1.5T was ultimately worse than living with the CVT and with as much as they're charging for that crossover segment now, the tables have turned in favor of the Subarus.

Finally a reviewer that can say it as it is. What really matters is this. And in top of all that, it is incredibly ergonomic; yes, even for 6’2” 270Lbs guys (that is me btw). I am definitely narrowing it down to the basic model, I don’t even need the extras that the Premium (that) adds on. Honestly? I believe a key start is even an inherently deterrent to most car thieves now that most have keyless start (in my own opinion). But seriously. I can care less about heated seats, LED fog lights, “manual-mode paddle shifters”? This is such a tease no? Isn’t this a CVT transmission? I could get used to not having ACTIVE safety features. I never had those anyways. So not going to miss it. Fancy driving modes for a AWD car? No need that either. Lets be frank. I am getting a need not a want. I need a car that consistently and reliably takes me from home to work and then some, every day. Crosstrek does it. The list of the standard features in the entry level mode is unbelievably good and for what it is worth, the base and the Premium both have better fuel economy than the Sport and Limited.

I had been waiting several months for a RAV4 Hybrid with no end in sight (for which the Toyota dealer wanted $48k out the door). With all that time to think I saw this updated Crosstrek and was curious enough to test drive one. The Subaru dealership experience was day and night better than any Toyota dealer I've dealt with (granted that's about 3 Toyota dealerships). I put down a deposit on one with exactly everything I wanted and it should be here in a couple weeks and be nearly 20k less than a RAV4 Hybrid. That opens up the budget to get a Miata Sunday driver. One other thing to note is the 2.0L variants are built in Japan and the 2.5L variants will be, for the first time, built in the US. That was a factor in my picking a 2.0L variant (aside from price).

You wanted nicer seats, bigger engine, or even some safety systems then no manual option for you. Actually side note. That appears to be very common with a lot of companies with any manual option left. There only available in very specific models or weird configurations. Like company’s want to justify there removal.

We’re helping our son through Med School. He’s enrolled at UW in Seattle. We bought him a Crosstrek with the 2.5L, so when he comes home on what little breaks he gets, he’ll have no problem driving over the passes coming home on the 2.5 hour drive. He wanted a Forester Wilderness so we told him that he can buy whatever he wants after becoming a Surgeon. He loves off roading, but we decided that he needed a Crosstrek Limited to get him through school. I’m sure he’ll be driving it long after Med School because we can’t pay for all of it, so he’ll have to pay off his student loans.

I paid for my own transportation and my own education through my PhD and the only thing I got for graduation was a smile and a handshake. My wife and I have always praised our children in their successes and encouraged them in their failures. Buying our son a reliable vehicle to get him through med school was a pleasure for us to do. We talk once every week. Sometimes he’s overwhelmed and other times he’s over the moon. He chose to become a MD. I chose to become a psychologist. It was disappointing to see that the 2023 Crosstrek is no longer an IIHS Top Safety Pick due to a Poor rating in the updated moderate front overlap and side impact tests. I am curious to see if Subaru made design changes to the 2024 model to restore the IIHS rating.

Me too. Also, regarding the RVT useage issues as engine sealer, Mark said the 2.5 had this issue but he wasn't really clear whether the 2.0 in this Crosstrek was designed differently enough that it doesn't have as much RVT. Anyone know for sure? Maybe differences in timing chain/belt covers? I'm not very familiar with the boxer except for its many issues over the years, but loyal fans defending it vehemently. There must be something to like. Another curiosity I've had, are Subes known to have strong or weak A/C?

My 07 and 2011 Legacy were on the weakee side while the 2016 and 2019 Legacy were stronger. Note on the 2016 and 2019, while the ac worked better, it took a little longer than I'd like to cool, but once it was there it was great.

The 2nd gen Crosstrek chassis really goes back to 2017 with the launch of the Global Platform Impreza; those were top picks for their launch period. By 2023 most of the competitors came out afterwards and would have been developed in the window for the revised IIHS tests, so it was really comparing older vs newer platforms. This new Crosstrek would have been developed with the new test in mind, the IIHS isn't in the business of suddenly springing a new test on manufacturers without notice.

The last time a 200bhp car was 25 grand was an old GTi or a Civic Si, and you got far less in terms of safey and standard features, let alone awd.
