I wouldn't call it lucky, it's purely because you do such a methodical and thorough job, logically troubleshooting from beginning to end. It's a great lesson to people not to skip steps in a path.

Master class. No luck involved here, just master class. I know very little about electronics but I do enjoy being shown how these faults are hunted down methodically. Nice video. Over the years, I've learned a big weak spot on ham rigs seems to be the plugs not being soldered correctly to PC boards. I had an Icom rig that had endless bad solder joints on it and I spent a lot of time looking for bad components and not getting much of anywhere, and then noticing the solder joints on the plugs didn't look too good. I reflowed almost every joint in it and got it working 100% eventually. Many other rigs had fewer bad joints, but the plugs were where most all of them were located.

Though it may appear that your re-flowing of the connection to the board solved the problem. I would say it may have actually been the removal of the ribbon cable from the connector and re-connecting it which 'reformed' the ribbon cable and allowed it to mate properly to the connector. If you had removed and reseated the ribbon cable you may have had similar results. I say this mostly because I have worked on other Yaesu radios that use the same connector and ribbon cable type and have had to replace ribbon cables because the plastic in the cable deforms and causes an open connection to it's mating connector. Every piece of kit has a set of known issues, believe me, I fix stuff for a living. And this is a know issue with the FTdx3000. The standard fix for this is to reseat both ends of the ribbon cable. 9 times out of 10 that is the fix for no frequency display and no button operation. I would certainly try that before resoldering anything. All the same, it's good to see your troubleshooting skills are still up to speed Peter. It really is a dieing art! ..for anyone interested, the Yaesu FTdx3000 group has a lot of info and examples about this fault.

Great job. Maybe you should have bought a lottery ticket that day! Looking at that interconnect diagram made me wonder if any of the Yeasu engineers used to work for Kenwood and had a hand in the Kenwood TS-940...LOL... I'm now working on two 940s. My new FTDX-3000D should be here Monday. Thanks for showing us how easy they are to repair!🙂

I oversaw the maintenance of all electronic gear on three different USN ships. I cannot tell you how many times my technicians "fixed" complex problems with $50,000 pieces of comm gear by resetting ribbon cables and connectors.

I figured it would be somewhere between the boards, I was calling it in the ribbon cable (rc), bad solder joint at the rc connector. I had a problem with my FT-950, had to take the front off and was dumbfounded by how short some of the cables are, engineers are so confident of their designs they don't think of the poor tech who has to fix the thing.

I don't think it was luck at all, experience told you that the solder point was bad so you knew exactly which one to reflow. I went to school for electronics but I never was very good at troubleshooting you make it look easy. Keep up the good work!

A very enjoyable journey through your fault finding. With hindsight I suppose pressing the boards might have found the bad joint but this would not have been so interesting to watch. I have found unsoldered joints in wave soldered boards which must have been making contact when tested in the factory.

Peter should be known as TRX Genius.

First thing any technician would do is go straight to the ribbon connector, years of experience tells you the first logical place to look, when a customer is paying for a repair, the technicians task is to repair quickly a properly. Same goes with an auto technician, first thing a customer wants to know is how long it's going to take and how much its going to cost. This is a 30 minute job.. uk cost approx £17.50, or you can have someone looking at it for 3 hours getting the same results and the repair bill would be £105..

Good logical fault finding. Those bus-type schematics can be time consuming. Maybe the rig worked at the factory and vibration in transit caused the fault on the dodgy ribbon conn. Every confidence in you, Peter. 8-)

I really enjoyed this video. As an Ftdx-3000 owner, it caught my eye. Great find on the cable. Did you examine the cable for corrosion before reinstalling it, although it sure looks like a solder proplem. We will probable see more of that as we move away from lead solder. You make it look easy as you explain what you are doing, but after some 30 years in the business I know that things are not so simple. This was a great repair job. I would be interested in a video about your shop and equipment, and your background as a repair technician. I enjoy your videos. Again. Great work!

When you took the front off and I saw the ribbon cables I thought you would have pulled all the cables out and cleaned the cables and sockets, by my experience with large printers that's what I have found a few times to be the problem, except in my case they were traveling cables.

TRX.. i got a display readout problem…might be something like this but if i could upload a picture here…then u could see what pops up after awhile on..

Hello, my ftdx3000 left bottoms stay on when turn off, and relays sound different during off, after full rest too.

If it was working prior to going out...first thing I would have checked is the ribbon cables,as,sometimes after work or mars mod on radio,ribbons get damaged or not plugged back in properly...which if damaged or not plugged back in properly,will knock out certain functions on the radio....

Peter did you verify the resorder pin was for DIM 1 or DIM2 ,culd be just a dirty ribbon cable/connector. thaks for posting
