In this video I wanted to try a black pillow with my floating bloom to show how it differs from the white pillow. I hope this video is helpful and inspiring for you and you enjoy watching this half as much as I enjoyed creating it!

PRODUCTS USED IN THIS VIDEO:
Glidden Premium Base 3 in Satin mixed with
Matisse Fluid Carbon Black
Roughly 14.5 oz of the base 3 mixed with about .5 - 1oz of the Carbon Black, just watch the color for how you want it while mixing.
Pouring Medium Mixes:
Base - Valspar Ultra High Gloss Base C: Found at Lowe’s (In Canada it’s called Valspar Hi Gloss Enamel Base C)
Varnish - Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane Water in Crystal Clear Gloss: Found online at Dick Blick, Jerry's Artarama, josonja.com, The Fluid Art Company or google it
PM Mixed 3:1 Base/Varnish
Acrylic Paints/Pigments:
Pebeo Studio Acrylics Iridescent Blue Black & Blue Green
Golden Fluid Permanent Violet Dark & Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold
Arteza Bordeaux Red
PM to Paint measurement (ESTIMATE!):
1.5oz (45ml) PM to between 1/4 tsp (1.25ml) to a 1/2 tsp (2.5ml) paint to start. If too thin add a little more paint (or even a gel gloss), if too thick add a little more PM to thin more or even more of your varnish or other acrylic extender/thinner).

I love the black background so much. It is so intriguing to look at, up close, as well as further back. I really love your color pallet for the painting. Oooh, I love the addition of the Bordeaux red! Can’t wait to compare the white background. I have been having trouble with my pillow being too runny lately, and not getting cells. I have trouble with asthma and don’t have enough air to move the paint. I’m going to try some swipes.

Just lovely Jodi. And I giggle just a bit when you say “I just used a 12x12” canvas…” remember when that was your “big” size. You were so brave stepping up to the larger canvases but they’re not so scary any more are they?! And I really love how the black almost swallows the other colours, I don’t see it as a negative at all because it seems to me that the bloom colours are bursting out through the centre of the canvas. Very dramatic, as your title suggests. Another beauty for sure. Love your work. As always hugs D

I know right, haha! The 12” seems so small to me now but at one point they were terrifying! That 20” on my shelf is still terrifying to me now haha! 🤗💜

I really love the nickel azo gold on the black background it's almost a completely different color when you put it on a dark background like that and that red ♥️ love it!! I have a feeling I'm gonna love the white background more just because I always tend to lean towards the brighter colors and a white cell activator too but I do like this a lot I think resin would really bring those disappearing petals back to life I'd love to see the set if you resin them to compare them dry before resin and what the resin does when you use it on a dark canvas like that so ready for wday to see how that red changes this pallette on a white pillow love that you are doing it 2 ways and showing them together for us to compare great work my friend 🤗🥰💓💗💖🎨💞😍

If you were to varnish it with some clear milk paint, I bet it would really pop! It's still lovely. I just hate when the black eats my colors.

I’ve not heard of clear milk paint 🤔 I may have to try this. I did figure out a way to get the colors to pop on black in my next video on Sunday so stay tuned 😃💜😃

Hi Jodie got my piggys today i took your advice on 3 of them. they are smaller than i expected but a day early feels Xmas in June!!!❤ cheers! lovely. i made MY new pouring medium using a paint called Beauti-tone. So Miss Shellee CAN'T SAY you HAVEN'T dragged your coat for her!! (to use a very old expression from snobs) lol😂 THANKS AGAIN

This is beautiful. I have a question for you, I get cells with my cell activator but they are teeny tiny do you know what the reason could be for this Jody any suggestions would be appreciated

What does it look like under a black light? Would a Krystal Resin top coat make the gold cell activator lacing stand out better in typical indoor lighting?

There’s no neon colors in this piece so it probably won’t look like much under a blacklight 😊. It may make it stand out a little more with resin on top but if it’s a darker area overall it’ll just be a shiny dark area. The more pronounced gold and shimmers will definitely stand out more under resin 🤗

How did you keep the black in the Base 3 Glidden paint from turning grey? Also, when I search Home Depo for this Base 3 they do not offer it on-line or in store. Did your Chicago HD have it in store or on-line? Thank you!

I honestly don’t know, I just added in what I thought was enough to the base 3 and kept mixing. It looked like a really really dark gray but it dried black. You could also have them tint it for you at the store if you want to try it that way. You won’t find any base lower than the first one online, you have to go into the store to purchase it. They don’t want people accidentally buying an untinted base online so they have removed them from their website. All my Home Depot’s and Lowe’s have untinted bases inside the store 🤗

Thanks, Jodi! Yes, went to the store and saw it. I did choose the PPG base 1 in eggshell this time as a pillow. I did find an article on-line about bases and why they are numbered as they are. Short explanation here is that indeed the #3 is best for dark tints. I plan on getting base 3 in a couple weeks. Anyway, mixed up five colors and this morning will be creating a masterpiece with the white. Ha! Hopefully! 😊

I have a question, please... When you buy paint for your pillow. Do you ever just buy the black paint, or any other color you would like to use? Or do you usually mix it yourself?

Sure, I don’t because I like to mix my own and have the option to be able to tint it other colors besides just having the one but you can certainly have them tint it at the store for you if you want to go that route. If you do, I would do a quart first to make sure you like how it performs 🤗

Love your channel.. Question: My ca= aust. flo, 3:1, Pillow= glidden base 1, pm= glidden base 3, golden paints mixed as directed. When I blow out the bloom I get a ton of white cells down into the pillow in some areas, but great lacing and cells in other areas. I then try to blow as little as possible to still get the paint to move, but same result. Still too much air or is something else going on here??

Thank you Evelyn 🤗 if you are getting some good parts with lacing and then some bad parts it sounds like it’s just execution which is about 90% of this technique. Just keep practicing with it. Sometimes my blow game is way off depending on the day so I get it 🤗

I am confused is pillow the same terminology as the paint you put down first? As the main base, that is the black paint?

Yes, the pillow paint is the paint that is put down first before your other colors that are mixed with your pouring medium. Some do call it the “base” paint but the blooms technique sort of adopted the term pillow to distinguish it from base as we talk about using an untinted base paint for your pouring medium so that may be confuse the term “base” a little bit so it’s usually called the pillow that the other paints sit on 🤗

It’s taken a lot of practice and patience to know how much paint to take off in order for it to not crack 🤗. I’m always checking as I’m spinning and tilting to see how it’s moving and I know when it’s barely moving I’ve taken enough off for it to dry nicely in my environment 💜
