The Ranger is a great little workhorse, no doubt. That's quite a feat of towing for a 4 cylinder. Not towing related, but I've always loved that they have so much ground clearance even with the 2 wheel drive. Thanks for sharing! 😎

Great point about the ground clearance. On my 2006 Ranger (2wd also), I upgraded the tires one size to 235/75r15. After that - most people thought it was a 4x4.

You wouldn’t believe some of the loads I’ve towed and hauled with a Ranger over the years. They are a great truck! Pulled a 3,500 lb round baler home from Abingdon which is 1.5 hour drive when I was 18 with my Ranger at the time. It had the 3.0 v6. You sure have a nice little truck there! Take care!

Wow - towing the round bailer would be a task for a little pickup! But another great example of how powerful and useful these little utility trucks can be. They're like ants - small but powerful and productive.

I towed a little over 4k pounds with a 02 4x4 3.0 auto Ranger with 4.10s for a little over 200 miles. It surprised me how well it did and was little over the 7500 GCWR. Of course, it was overdrive off, frame hitch and flat lands... I also definitely would not have done it without trailer brakes. I think with a few mods and uncorked exhaust it could do even better. If you're not in a hurry you'd be surprised what these older Rangers can do, even the 3.0.

@@zachsheffee8458 That is mostly do to different laws for towing, in Europe the Speedlimit while towing is usely 80 or 100kmh in the US they dont have different speedlimit it is usely 70mph that are 130kmh, also to be stable at this speed they drive with more tounge weight about 10- 15% in Europe usely 5%. Cars arent allowed to tow alot of weigh in the US, mostly to do the high tounge weigh required, that regular cars cant handle. Ontop of that they have mostly automatic transmission and lower gear reduction in there drivetrain, it is much likly that the gearbox will overheat if you try to tow with an for the US market designt car.

Isn’t it crazy how vehicles keep getting bigger again. They were big in the 70’s and early 80s. Then they got smaller and more compact. Now everything is getting bigger again. The new “little trucks” are definitely not the same size as the little Ranger. This truck is very convenient and I’m glad I found it.

I own: 2009 Ranger regular cab XL 2.3 5 speed manual, long bed with 4.10 rear axle ratio and, 2011 Ranger Supercab XLT 2.3 5 speed manual, short bed with 4.10 rear axle ratio. Summer 2022 I prepared the 2009 to go into a shop for a new clutch. I removed the smashed bed then built my own tow bar base plate on the front. I then towed it around town some with my 2011 Ranger before going into the shop. I had added sand ballast to the bed of the 2011 so it’s rear tires didn’t slide around. I double clutched it some and I also drove very carefully. Minus the bed and tailgate the 2009 was probably about 3,400 pounds. A 7’ Ranger bed minus tailgate and taillights is right on 200 pounds. From the factory the 2009 had a 3.73 open 7.5” axle and my brother helped swap in a 4.10 open 7.5” axle. I’d love to find an FX4 4.56 axle to swap in it but I have other things to buy right now.

Another point… when cornering you have to have enough mass in front of the hitch to keep the angular momentum of the mass behind the hitch from jackknifing. While turning from a paved road to a gravel road… we’ll, let’s just say…. A 5000lb trailer behind a Kubota BX23S tractor will leave skid marks in the driveway and your shorts! Even at 4MPH. You can upgrade the brakes to tow 3,000 or 4,000 pounds on occasion especially with trailer brakes! You can add a little power to the engine with small upgrades tow it easier! You can add air bags beside the rear shocks to help with leveling. You can also keep it to 55 mph or less.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the thoughts! I still think the Ranger is really only heavy enough and powerful enough to safely tow the recommended tow rating according to the Ford towing guide. Adding better brakes, air bags, and even engine upgrades will increase performance when towing - but not increase the mass of the vehicle itself.

How easily does the Ford ranger 2.3 L five speed manual handle 2,000to 2500 pounds? To do you sometimes pull a 2000 to 2600 pound small car on a dolly? Like a Mazda Miata to a Mazda 3 at 55 mph?

Can my 2001 ford ranger v6 pull a 5x10 utility trailer with 2 zero turn mower?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife Жыл бұрын
If you can locate the Ford Towing Guide for 2001, it will tell you the towing ratings for your truck. I believe there were two versions of the V6 back then. One is the 4.0 SOHC - which can tow the most (somewhere around 5,000 lbs depending on configuration). If you can find that towing guide, or refer to your instruction manual, it may give you more info. Not knowing exactly what truck engine/transmission you have, what the 5x10 trailer is, or what zero turn mowers you have, I can't be 100% confident, but I would think it should be able to do it. Again - check your manual/specs to be sure. Thanks for watching!

So excuse the dumb question.... So the weight capacity is based on the engine? 1,500lbs (4cly) and 5,700 lbs (V6 4.0)? Not the trucks weight,size or brakes? How is it that big of a difference? So my truck a 98 with a 4.0 and says 3,500lbs towing cap. How do they figure this? Engine strength? Transmission strength? Be nice im really trying to understand fully and yes ive towed trailers before (CDL class A)
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 жыл бұрын
That's not a dumb question. The towing and cargo capacity is a calculation done by the engineers at the vehicle manufacturer. I'm sure it's based on many factors. I'd guess that it includes the engine's capability to safely get the load moving, the capability of the brakes to safely stop the load, the ability for the transmission to direct engine power to the axle/tires/roadway, and the capability of the suspension/frame to handle the load up and down hills, and around turns. I'm sure that a lot of calculations and thought go into these ratings. Thanks for watching!

So how well can it pull 2,000 to 2,500 lbs? Is it too hard on it to pull that at 55 mph? If you wanted to pull a small car or something? That is about 2,000 to 2,600 pounds? Is that too much?

I'd refer to the towing guide and the specifics for your vehicle. Never exceed the manufacturer's recommendations. I would not use my Ranger to try to pull a small car.

@@PurpleCollarLife It tows so much better than my old 4.6L F150, not as good as my diesels, but not bad. The rear disc brakes,extra torque & brake controller make so much difference.Its saved my butt a few times when the diesel was in the shop and we had jobs to complete.We towed the 7x12 dump trailer with my little skid steer and all the tools in it and it did great for being about 10,000lbs .You just need a little patience on long hills here in Colorado.But we tow 3500-5000 with it daily and no problems. I would love to have a little Ranger again for light duty stuff and estimates.

do you think a 4.0l 4x4 5 speed manual transmission would be able to tow that trailer? gonna be towing the same trailer size as yours.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 жыл бұрын
You'd need to refer to the instruction manual and the towing guide for your particular Ranger. But I believe that most of those 4.0 V6 Rangers from the 2000s show as able to tow between 2300 and 3300 lbs (depending on the setup). You can google the Ford Towing Guide for your year Ranger and find some good information online. Thanks for watching!

I do like the searching and buying process. I've seen a nice little red one on Craigslist that looks interesting. Similar to mine, but no cap, it DOES have cruise control, but has a bit more miles on it. It'd be a great little truck for someone. :)

Any plans to tow up at least a 5% grade for at least a mile?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 жыл бұрын
I recently used the Ranger (2.3 L, 5 speed) to tow a 1200 pound load up a 7% grade that is about a mile. I did have to shift down into 3rd gear and keep the RPMs high, but it maintained 55 mph just fine.

so the 4x4 manual or automatic transmission can not tow?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry - I am not exactly sure what you're asking. The 4x4 can tow - but in this year that 4x4 option isn't available in the 4 cylinder engine. If it were 4x4, it would likely have the 4.0 SOHC engine, and have a higher tow rating.

Why less towing capacity when with a manual??
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 жыл бұрын
That's correct. I'm not sure exactly the reason - but I know this is pretty typical that the automatic transmissions have higher tow rating capacities.

Do you tow in 5th gear on highway? I was told dont do it! ! It'll kill the transmission! And stay in 4th

Never. 4th gear maximum. But I don't tow anything on the highway with this truck (at 70 MPH). I just tow on the roads that are 55MPH or less around here.

The 4.0 is a good strong V6 engine. But I'd worry about the rest of the system failing pulling more than the recommended weight limit. For example - the brakes. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@freedom24v86
@freedom24v86 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly they really do base most towing capacity on power and gear ratios .... the 4.0 brakes are the same between the two rangers so stopping power remains the same I mean in the 80s the ranger was rated at 4500 lbs with the 2.3 😂 And ford dodge chevy all slap higher tow rating with bigger motors even though they all used the same brakes axles etc ... Honestly untill recently that was the standerd "if you got the big motor and short gears you can tow 8k lbs if you gots the v6 and shot gears you can tow 4k" Brakes axles etc remain the same 😂 Best and i mean absolute best example is the 2500 and 3500 dodge ram from 94-02 there frames brakes etc all the same but based on gearing or transmission option towing capacity was 10-15k lbs The 3500 dually getting lower towing higher payload capcity and the 2500 srw getting higher towing lower payload Buuttt ill say this as ive had a few 😅 the brakes between the different capacitys is the same and the brakes only suck when your 25k gcvw but its also fine cause the highest the trucks were rated at were 21k gcvw And to clearify im talking about cummins as thats all ive had but i also know the v10 trucks were similarly equiped

Would a 1997 ranger haul 5,000 pounds?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 11 ай бұрын
There’s not enough detail to answer that question. I’d recommend looking at the Ford towing guide for 1997. It’s going to depend on what engine you have, what gear ratio, the configuration of your truck, etc. If you’re saying tow a trailer that weighs 5,000 lbs, that’s also different than hauling (in the bed) 5000 lbs. Again - you’d want to check the ratings for your truck configuration, but my initial guess is that 5,000 lbs is going to be a lot for the little truck, now 26 years old, to handle - even if originally it was rated to tow 5,000 lbs.
