In the far Canadian North, winter comes early. But this is good. I love being at my camp when it's very cold. I love challenging myself with the extreme temperatures. Having a bush camp is a lot of work. You need to stay fed and you need to stay warm. Join me as I venture into the deep woods and cook up a bacon sandwich and a mouth watering steak.
Here are all of my tiny cabin hot tent videos: www.youtube.co....
Follow me on instagram: / ajayinthewoods
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the KZfaq training (watching) over the years.
What gear do I use?
Canon 90D camera
Rode videomicro
Sigma Art 18-35mm 1.8
Sigma Art 50mm 1.4
Canon 10-18mm stm
I do not live in the tent. I just visit whenever I can.

The cold kills batteries. Here in Maine, mine does great in the summer, winter not so much. FYI keep your sodium level up. I camped for a week when I got home, the next day I was in the hospital for 3 days, critical low sodium level. Passed out, face planted on a tile floor, broken nose and lost a front tooth.

Jay you want to conserve firewood in the tent? You double wall inside and you’d be surprised at the efficiency increases. Get hold of some canvas drop tarps that painters use. Fasten those to the inside of your frame. Cover from the peak to the floor. Works great 👍

I agree with you 100%. I used to moose hunt in late October in northern Ontario and we would spend a week in summer tents. The trick was to cover the entire tent with plastic creating a vapour barrier. This plus a small heater would keep us nice and warm in a 12 X 14 tent. He could use the canvas from the other tent he has from the second campsite. Vapour barrier is the best way to go.

Jay, when using any files, only put pressure on the push stroke never on the pull. Files are designed to cut on the push only. A small amount of damage is done to the file every time you apply pressure on the pull stroke. Same while sharpening your axe, push strokes only with the sharp end of the axe facing away from you. Another hit is to clean your file with a metal brush after using it because microscopic chips fill the gap between the file teeth making it less efficient just like a dull chain on the chainsaw. I used to use two files to sharpen the chain, first with coarse file then with a smooth (fine) file just like sharpening a knife. It takes a little longer but worth it. Great video, keep them coming.

Nice video Jay, Just a tip in passing. Insulate the ceiling with 2" foam insulation and put some between the walls and canvas, it will make a world of difference. I lived in a wall tent off grid in S.W. Alaska for 5 years and was never cold. One more thing whe you sharpen your chain, don't go back and forth, just go forward 2 or 3 times and follow the angle on the tooth. Now, the meals, they looked mighty tasty and I am going to try them. Your videos are top notch and I really enjoy them, looking forward to future videos. Thanks for sharing.

Nothing more important than family….even the tent, 🙂🙂 Yeah sweat is a killer. I rode my bike year round for two years, and xcrountry skied for many years, and people were surprised by how little I wore. I’d ski to minus 15c, and ride till about minus 22c. Gotta block the wind with something like wool, but not so much that vapour can’t escape. If you could find a cotton canvas jacket or a cheap windbreaker, then layer so you can take a bit off as needed would be best. Whatever it takes to not sweat. Oh, and nothing says you have to hurry. You can slow down too. Your cutting board looks like it’s bamboo. I saw on a cooking channel that it’s so hard, that it can wreck the edge of your knives. Since you love those knives so much, you may want to get a regular wood board…or not. 🙂

to preserve your silky blade you can buy a draw knife and strip the bark where you cut before sawing. Its the dirt in the bark that dulls the blade fast. Even though its more work it might still be worth it. Also, you probably already know this stuff, but a strop might help you keep your blades sharp without having to resharpen removing metal. Just a few suggestions not any criticism.

I really want that cold. when it's going down to -20 and lower it's no longer cold it's getting warmer. But as always we probably never going to get it. Now days it comes some snow, then then the temperature goes to low + temp and everything starts to melt, getting ice, some negative degrees for some days then some snow and all starts over again. Really miss the long cold periods we hade in the late 80's and 90's. never complain about the cold, some days it's gone. And i'm not sure it's climate change or some natural changes, it can be a combination. Stay safe out there on wilderness Jay. really love your videos :D

You mentioned in a past video that you wished the woodstove doors were gasketed. Take a look at replacement door gasket kits for outdoor wood boilers. They have gasket material and adhesive designed for high heat. Could easily be made to work with those doors, just would need to install it the day you leave when the woodstove isn't cranking out heat. The adhesive and gaskets would be set so it's ready for your next trip back to the tent.
@jaylegere
@jaylegere 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have purchased gasket kits to install, the issue now is putting a latch on the top door to keep it secure on the gasket and then the other issue is there isn't a ridge around the front door to hold a gasket secure so it doesn't end up sliding down. Definitely would like to figure it out though. Thanks for the comments!
@moonrakerelite6905
@moonrakerelite6905 2 жыл бұрын
I thought about this some..... if you can find the type of gasket that has a square cross section and is like a foam/rubber, you may be able to take a utility knife and cut a slot into it, about half the depth. Then add some adhesive in the slot and fit it on along the outside edge of the front door. That would help hold it in place and keep it from sliding. Adding a ridge on the door would most likely involve welding metal onto the door. As for the top door....if you haven't already, look for high temperature "make-a-gasket" sheets. They are super thin and can be cut to any shape and shouldn't add enough extra thickness to keep the top from resting flat. Adhere it to the top of the stove instead of the bottom of the top door and it won't move much or at all. There's nothing worse than burning through wood quicker than you should or having it hotter than you want. Just some suggestions but hope you figure it out!

FINE STEEL WOOL and a 9 volt battery work great for starting your fire inside or outside.... all-weather, (the windier the better)... Just touch the two poles of the battery to the piece of steel wool and POOF... instant fire. 🤠 You can use just a pinch for dry kindle and a whole pad for wetter/greener kindle. It will give about a minute of full burn time. We use it as a fire-safety training tool because everyone always has that "Junk Drawer" at home and when old AA batteries and metal meet.... well... a lot of house fires actually start that way. In addition... sprinkle a little flour or powdered creamer between your fingers, over the top of your beginning flame (like you would salt on food)... and it will cause an instant flare-up which catches much quicker as well.. Try it over a candle or lighter first, and you'll see. 🤠

The thing i dislike the most about winter is the short days ! I’m in the south east of England 52.7° N, just south of London & it’s dark now here shortly after 4pm & not light until 6.30 - 7am, in a month it’s winter solstice & the daylight hours will be 6-6 ½ hours. You wanna do great wedges or chips, you gotta boil them first, let them drain then fry them up, that way you get nice crisp outsides & soft fluffy insides.

It's good to see & experience real cold through your videos! 😁

Yeah, winter in NS isn't much of a winter. I went to university there and really missed the deep, cold snow.

Ugh! It's just getting cold here, nothing like what you're enduring. I think 18 or 19F. I'm having trouble getting motivated to do anything but sit in front of wood stove. Thanks, curious about those electric saws.

Hello there from Sweden...Buy a fan (selfspeeding/running fan from the heat no power needed) to put on top of the woodstove to circulate the heat ill promise you that helps to get a wormer tent...Pushing the warm air around a tip from me ;)

I have one already! But I rarely bring it to my tent. It lives on my wood stove at home. I used it during my earlier days on KZfaq in my first tent.

Buddy, too many branches, not enough airflow could be easily remedied with a pocket bellows. I really don't understand why more bushcrafters do not use this tool. Lovely vid. Keep them coming.

Jay, thank everyone again for being able to start the fire on arrival. Go get a flat bar of metal ( 12 inches x 1 1/2 )bend it to a 90 about 2 inches down. drill a hole in short piece for a handle for the big pot. Save the oil in a container where you keep your fire wood, you never know. Pouring into the fire may not be the best idea. Get the smallest spoon in containing and use it for salt and pepper, spilling it on your food ( by distraction, clutz, or sneeze ) and you ruined your meal. Are you still seeing your friend?

Awesome video Jay. Great shots of the lights, moon & stars, and things on fire, as always. Ever consider taking the sled out to collect up a big pile of snow for water making? Only one trip out on the lake and you can just pile what you don't use right away beside the tent for later. Enjoy your time with family. It goes by too fast. See you next trip.

Great video Jay. When u sharpen your chain on the Saw, only use the file in one direction. Preferably pushing away from you. U are so lucky to have snow up there so early. Winter is awesome Take care n be safe. Enjoy.

Leave the E-saw at home where you can charge it. Sharp gas saw is way better in your temps. Mine lives on the back of my sled. Always starts. Make sure to use isopropyl gas line antifreeze.

Hi Jay ! beautiful video man !! Since I have a similar set up like yours, I'd like to share a few tricks of mine. I installed aluminium foil bubble insulation on the inside walls. No more cold drafts and excellent light and heat reflection...and the fire reflects on the aluminium...looks like a million stars inside the camp !!! I solved the problem about having heat during the night....I just don't have any. I let the stove go out before going to bed. That way I go to bed dressed and with the appropriate sleeping bag to keep me warm without relying on the stove. Nothing worse than going to bed hot, sweety and half naked and the waking up half frozen. But I do have a secret weapon.... put a nice round rock on the stove 30 min before going to bed, wrap it in a cloth to prevent burns and put it at your feet in the sleeping bag. I will last for many hours. Leaving a pot full of water on the stove is the best way to have water fast for the next trip. I've been doing this for many years. Thanks again Jay and take care !!

Thanks Staphane! I'm not sure I would use aluminum bubble all the way around as it would prove difficult in lighting situations due to to reflection. That said, I like your ideas and can totally see how this would be a cheap solution!

I can't taste. But I still love food. Sometimes I get hints of flavour. But for the most part I'm enjoying saltiness, texture, hot, cold etc. It's the flavors I really struggle with.

I like the way you think when it comes to your heating source, wood. Most folks think, "yeah, I have enough", they never do. In my opinion, if you think you have enough firewood....then you need to triple that and then some!! Better to have "too much" and know that your going to be warm than to run out and freeze your ass off.

Not sure if any of the other comments mention this but the best tip I can suggest for a chainsaw is to take a little bit off the rakers or depth gages every time you sharpen the chain or they will be sticking up higher than the the teeth.it didn’t seem like the saw was getting as much bight as could be.
