The far North is an amazing place to be. This year was a late start to winter and I am crossing the lakes by foot to get to my tent shack paradise. It's very windy and blustery, but the weather isn't too cold yet. One of the best things about being a KZfaqr is that I get ideas from you! During this 3 day trip in the wilderness, I build a foldable meal tray so I can eat while looking at the beautiful scenery.
Here are all of my tiny cabin hot tent videos: kzfaq.info?list...
Follow me on instagram: / ajayinthewoods
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the KZfaq training (watching) over the years.
What gear do I use?
Canon 90D camera
Rode videomicro
Sigma Art 18-35mm 1.8
Sigma Art 50mm 1.4
Canon 10-18mm stm
I do not live in the tent. I just visit whenever I can.

I was cheering out loud you took my door shelf suggestion! I have since revised it since I made the suggestion, but I feel you already know what I'll suggest as you use it and make the appropriate upgrades. I also will suggest always having fire kindling ready, with a lighter or 2, for emergencies. If you're remote, and you or a person seeks shelter in your cabin, you will need fire to save your life or lives. I'd also include a few cans of soup or food, just so someone can take shelter in an emergency situation but I'd also leave a pen and paper so they can write you a message.

Good on you Brian. Great suggestion and the magic of it was revealed as soon as the camera showed Jay sipping on his coffee enjoying the visual moment of that tremendous landscape. The therapy he will gain from having that shelf is of great value. Excellent idea and contribution by you!

i would actually leave some MRE's and a bottle of water, instead of cans of soup. the cans can start leaking when you have massive temperature differences. you can defrost a bottle of water inside you jacket and you need only a little bit to heat up an MRE, this way you have warm food even without a fire.

You have created an awesome way of living/getting away. The hard work makes you able to consume a lot of the delicious food you make. Chainsaw? Please don't. Most people can't stand the sound which resonates a long distance. I can't do what you are doing anymore but as a younger woman I did similar kinds of things in California and Vermont. I loved being alone. It saved me or helped me survive a career. Thank you for posting these videos. Really interesting.

Jay, I don't say this to anyone easily, but you are an absolute pleasure to watch!!! Like I *really* enjoy watching you!! ** The fact that I'm watching a FULL HOUR of you and I normally would NEVER do that on KZfaq, (I don't like watching that long) says a lot! 😊😊 You seem to be such a good person! Kind hearted and a little gentle soul in there!! I much prefer watching you than another more successful (shockingly, for what they do) KZfaqr bushcrafter who has like 1.5 million subs. But just don't have anywhere near a nice personality as yours! I just really appreciate you take the time to film such cinematic moments and every step of the ay you make the effort to take shots from every angle! It takes such effort! So just know I appreciate you and, be careful walking on that thin ice!! It might not be 4.5 cm everywhere! Keep being a kind soulful person Jay! 🤗🤗

Hello Jay, very interesting your videos, just seeing where you are gives me a moment of calm instead of the daily stress of the city. If you want, I would like to share with you an experience I had with the Inuit in northern Quebec. I worked two years as a Ranger Instructor and I can tell you that I learned a lot with them. One thing I learned, in the winter instead of hauling your water from the city or using the snow to make their drinking water, they explained to me when the lake water starts to freeze all the impurities that found there in the water will sink to the bottom of the lake. It therefore uses the ice for their water consumption by melting it as you do with your snow but minus the impurities on the surface of the lake. I wish you good luck with ice fishing you will find that the fish tastes better

Love my fiskers axes, I have a large and a hatchet. They split wood like it's butter. Best not to sharpen them too much, you want then to wedge that wood open. Remember the YK fireman who drove his week old F250 or F350 on the ice when the sign right outside of the firehall -where he worked - said the ice was too thin to snowmobile? Went right through the ice and his insurance paid out and even paid to remove it the next spring.

Gtsy back at the tent. I would suggest getting a USB LED light bulb,it has a long cord (Amazon)..just plug it into a portable power bank 27000 mAh ( Canadian Tire ) You can also charge your cellphone, light speaker..ect Just bring the power bank home and charge it for your next tent adventure. I use this method and it's Katz @zz when camping..haha Thanks for sharing 👊💥🇨🇦

It's a pressure cooker I noticed it right away. Jay your videos have gotten so much better from only 1 1/2 years ago. (not that they were bad back then) You sound different more grounded better in touch with your rustic surroundings. Your now a bushcraft woodsman. Nothing like a toasted mustard and cheese flatbread sandwich, with a bit of extra ham for added flavor.. 😁 Great shelf!

HI Jay !! Super pleasant video to watch. First time I saw your stove I was really sceptical about the smoke invading the whole camp when you opened up the top....but your explaination about the chimney actually sucking down the smoke convinced me about the logic of it. Made me think of the "Genair system". The guy you made it knew his stuff ! Crazy how a simple meal tray creates a whole new atmosphere and you are so right when you say how comfortable it is to be warm in the dark. Take care and keep your feet on thick ice !!

100% that was a pressure cooker. I just washed mine like an hour ago. You should get one, they’re awesome, and would be a great thing to have up there. You can make a stew or chilli in an hour that tastes like it cooked all day, or the cheapest, toughest piece of meat will just melt. I’m sure there’s a ton more stuff to do with them, but I’m no pro. For the temp in the tent, you do know you don’t have to always use splits in the stove, right? Probably it’s just what you recorded, and you do use full logs a lot, but Full logs will burn a lot slower, so it won’t overheat as much. I’m surprised at your reliance on electric lights and the chainsaw etc….batteries don’t do so well in that cold, where kerosene and gasoline are so much better. Though kerosene lanterns maybe aren’t the brightest for videos, but that saw is kinda lame. I think they’re more for the occasional branch sort of use, no? I’ve seen that doc btw. Interesting.
@SilvaDreams
@SilvaDreams 2 жыл бұрын
Yup batteries the colder it is the less charge they hold, though quite sure that is a lithium pack so it won't be TOO bad but if kept in below freezing it will still be meh though not nearly as bad as the old lead-acid batteries since their ability to discharge also drops as well since it's a chemical reaction. Sure a gas powered one might take a bit more manual work to start but it'll keep on chuging along once going.

Couple of ideas Jay, after Christmas when Princess Auto and the rest flog off their excess xmas stock, grab yourself a couple of sets of solar powered rope lights or fairy lights. They are switchable, the amount of light they need to recharge is negligible and they give a nice ambient light through the tent . Also ALWAYS keep a spare sharp chain with your chainsaw, that way when one gets dull swap them out and take the dull one home to re-sharpen.Keep up the good work mate, looking forward to the next one.

Cooking, camping, and carpentry, an outdoor trifecta. Score! I have to admit the door tray is a pretty cool idea. Just don't leave you lunch unattended, or those feathery little felons, the Whiskey Jacks will come along and help themselves. Or you could share with them too. Electric chainsaws are o.k., but at extreme sub zero weather, the running time on the battery is reduced. I'll pay odds that if you look in the manual, or even on the battery itself, it'll say do not freeze. Just like more vehicle batteries are replaced in the winter than any other time of the year, batteries of any kind don't like extreme cold. So ya, I would lean more to a gas saw myself. That and a sharp chain too, lol. "Fine Tent Dining with Jay", did not disappoint either. That flat bread sandwich grilled on the open fire looked pretty tasty. A couple of slices of cheese and some bread and butter pickles probably would have been good too. Anyways awesome video, looking forward to the next one. Cheers. 👋🇨🇦

It’s cozy alright! And you are a perfect companion in tune with the scene. Sharpen up that electric chainsaw. Get a kit and watch some videos. Once it’s resharpened it will only take a quick touch up to bring it back. Something satisfying to do after dinner while relaxing by the fire. look into Jackery battery bank inverters for extra power if so inclined. Good product. A couple of clamps make construction projects a lot easier if you’re by yourself too. Really like your manner and humble presentation skills. Good job!

Hey Gary. I'm definitely going to sharpen it next time out. Also, I have a jackery and will be bringing it out this winter. Thanks for the comments!

I love soup and sarmies. Especially chicken noodles. My friends say it smells like cat 😻 🐈 wee, but what the heck. Can live with it. Love the tent/cabin. It looks so warm and welcoming 🙏. Enjoy it and have fun.
