It's always great to see good old Akira. This class is my favorite, with the Thunderchild being my favorite ship in this class. (hopefully, if the Thunderchild was among the infected ships, it wasn't destroyed)

I always would have loved to see an Akria class, but with a Galaxy Class saucer, and nacelles. Another massive ship with the more oval saucer

I like to think that the Akira did have Galaxy nacelles in standard horizontal position, but before it went into full production, that TNG S7 ep happened and things got delayed to redesign the nacelles to what we got. I mean, the registry puts it not too far from the Galaxy so it's not out of the question.

Well, there's the Nebula class. It closely resembles your description except there's also a Galaxy class secondary hull instead of two slender hulls supporting the nacelles. I prefer the Nebula class over the Akira to be honest.

You could just turn this upside down and move the bridge structure to the other side of the saucer, invert the graphics and have a whole new class of ship.

I'm not convinced it is the same model. Some of it might just be slight differences in focal length and whatnot, but if you look at details like the swoop on the bottom of the ship just behind the saucer, or the little joggle in the grill on the nacelle, it looks like it's different geometry. I'm not sure if they just altered the original, or if they created a new one that's just THAT faithful to it. Either way, it looks pretty good.

One thing I like about the Prodigy model is whether accidentally or not they seem to have 'fixed' one of my nagging quibbles about a favorite ship class: it always looked like they made the saucer just a bit too sleek to really fit everything that's supposed to be in there, particularly the forward shuttlebay doors, but, you know, deck heights too, maybe a bit.

You mean by eliminating the front shuttle bay they corrected the interior space problem. Yes, but whether there's sufficient volume or not I never liked that feature anyway. I prefer shuttle bays to be located away from the saucer. It's hard to do that on the Akira due to limited space.

@@jamesaron1967 Wasn't sure they did that either. The idea of the full length bays was actually pretty cool mind you, but that's kinda separate from how many torpedo tubes may be in the saucer. But I meant they'd plumped up the proportions just a little compared to like a model I have. (I gave it a fair bit of a think to use one in some stories, in my case the fly-through bay was more dramatically-useful than, say, putting more torpedo tubes there. (I think I had a couple on the ventral side of the saucer.

The overlit pop out windows are probably a render error. The error occurs with all of them, making the models look like the windows pop out.

My favorite class overall is the Excelsior, but Akira comes a close second. Both have boat-like elements.

The rotary torpedo tubes was a good idea. Though I would have gone more mini gun rather than horizontal. But that would make for a different feel of the ship. Overall I like the design. The windows are an issue on the Prodigy one. But since it's for an animated show I can look past it somewhat. Same with some of the other flaws.

maybe the algorithm that extruded all the texture detail into real geometry also affected the windows

I hate the rotary torpedo launcher so much! It is the dumbest thing they have done with the entire Prodigy series. I like Prodigy and almost wish they hadn't made it just so that the rotary launcher wouldn't be canon.
