This is a video about the 23mm F1.4 WR LM for Fujifilm cameras. It is a lens that has proven to be essential in my arsenal but there was a time when I wasn't sure about it.

I fell in love with this lens immediately.. very first shot I took with it.. I didn't want to, because I didn't want to spend so much, but I'm glad I did.. On an X-T5 it may be the best combo I've ever shot.. the AF is instant and NEVER misses.. I was always a 50mm FL shooter.. but the 35mm is MUCH more useful

It is worth every penny spent on it! And as I said I find the combo 23 - 33 very good to work with.

@ I have the Viltrox 33. If I hadn't had the Viltrox, I would have gotten the Fuji 33 because 50mm was always my favorite FL. But, I couldn't see spending $800 on a FL I already had covered so I went for the 23, a FL I had never tried, but which is now my favorite 'normal' prime. With the 33 I would always bring an 18 because 33 can be too tight, but the 23 is almost always wide enough and so I'll pair it with more of a portrait lens, either the Sigma 56 or the magical Fuji 90 f2. I don't see a need to carry the 23 and 33 especially with the T5's 'digital zoom' or whatever it's called. The 23 digitally zoomed 1.4x is basically a 33.

I understand you and it makes sense! In my case, I had the 35mm F2 and I sold it to upgrade to a more premium lens. I bought the 23mm. And I definitely enjoyed it, but over time I have started missing the 35mm. I could have got back the 35mm F2, but since I shoot events in low light, I decided to go with the 33 F1.4. To me, it's exactly the fact that they look similar that makes it useful. It doesn't look like it was shot with a different lens. And while I can shoot "headshot" style portraits with the 33mm, with the 23mm it is a little harder. With XT5 40mp sensor, probably shooting at 23 and then having the ability to crop makes the 23mm a more versatile lens. I'm loving this conversation, btw! Engaging and constructive! Thanks for taking the time!

@ When I shot Canon full frame the 50 1.4 was my most used lens, it was great as an all arounder and also, like you said, as a 'headshot' lens (I also had the Canon 135 f2L, 17-40 f4 for wide).. the Fuji 10-24 replaced, and surpassed the 17-40 and the 90mm was able to replace the legendary 135 f2.. Like you, I also started with the Fuji 35 f2, which is a nice little lens, but I really missed the Canon 50 1.4.. I went for the Viltrox 33 1.4 and I liked that better.. but it still couldn't match 50 1.4 on a full frame.. it's still the one thing I miss about full frame.. So yes I agree, the 23 isn't as good for 'headshots' but a much better all arounder. I'd certainly love to have the 33, but you know $$$$$$ lol.. also I already carry 10-24, 18-55, 23, 56, 90 and there's just not space in the case

Yeah, I totally feel you! And you definitely have a lot of glass, and at this point having both 23 and 56 it doesn't make that much sense to have the 33 as well.

I agree with all of your considerations. Adding to your video, 4:01 It isn't "just about" 1 stop of light (as some people may think). I wish it was, because i do like the idea of a little powerhouse f2 lens and dont mind the 2x ISO or 2x shutter time. But, the 23mm f2 vs 23mm f1.4 lm wr is so much more then a stop of light. Without pixel peeping you can see diferences. The contrast is one major thing people seem to miss. These new f1.4 lenses are so much more accurate in showing contrast. Colors also are a touch more accurate. There is also the close up performance, that is non existent in the 23mm f2. The 23mm f1.4 have great close up performance. The newer lenses are "without compromises", meaning, the only compromises are size/weight/price. The smaller ones (fujicrons) are made to be cheaper and lighter, and it is noticeble. They even allowed a slight miss on the f2, which is that it actually is closer to 21mm in real life! To prove my point, the x100v for example had a better 23mm f2 fixed lens that had much better performance then the standard 23mm f2 lens, and that was by design. They wanted the x100v camera to be perfect in it's proposition goal. There, they didn't want to show too much compromise. That's one of the reasons that x100v sold so well. So, yeah, coming back to the conclusion, the new 23mm f1.4 lm wr is without a doubt the king of the fuji 23mm line up by miles

Thank you for the very detailed comment. I really appreciate it. I have never tested the 23 F2, I only had the 35F2 and it was pretty good. The image quality on the 23 F1.4 is on a whole other level though. Btw I had no idea the lens on X100V was made purposefuly better than the 23mm F2. Good to know!

@ I don't actually own all these lenses i talked about, but I do own the 33mm f1.4 lm wr, the 27mm f2.8 wr and a fuji XS10. The info i just described was from digging the internet hehe. I love the 33mm f1.4 so much, and the 27mm f2.8 has a bunch of limitations, but it is the only lens capable of turning a body+lens pocketable. IQ wise, the 27mm f2.8 is pretty good, but it doens't have the same contrast and colors of the 33mm. The 33mm makes the images look so much more polished. It is noticeble, at least for me in my TV monitor hehe. The x100v is almost perfect for what it proposes, i just think that for video, the lack of IBIS or OIS is too much. If the next model of the x100 line comes up with IBIS or OIS, it will be dificult not to have one, in my opinion, for travel / hiking / everyday life. So, perhaps, in the future, the ideal combo would be the "x100v mark II" with IBIS, to be light and compact and perfect in its goals, and a bigger 40mp camera (XH2 probably) with the new f1.4 lenses to make a specific job perfectly. Sorry about the english, from Brazil here!

Much prefer the 18mm focal length paired a 33 or 56. The 18 feels more intentional the 23 feels to me like I’m hesitant but the 18 you have to get it right framing and what not. But like you I’ve used it a lot the 23 that is, the mark 1 version which Ive just sold

I can see your point, but the thing is that for example when I shoot my 16-55 I end up a lot of times either at 23, 26 , 28 or 35, 38, 33. I never really end up under 20 unless I have to shoot a group photo or some architecture or similar.
