I fire to ^6 also. To control it at the very end, I program the last ramp at 80* for the last hour. With the residual heat there at top temperature, firing that slow at the end allows me to control how fast the cones go down. Then I do a 15 or 20 minute hold but the cones don’t change much. It gives a real good soak at top temp without over firing.

You make lovely pottery, and I wrote down a few of your combos to try! You did your lids right, you should fire the lids on the pots (but with no glaze where they meet of course). Lids will usually pop off when you tap all around them with a wooden dowel, or wooden spoon, or the wood handle of a hammer. You can usually tap harder than you think you should ;) Good luck!

When lids are stuck... place in the freezer for at least an hour... then lightly tap with a piece of wood or rubber hammer! Be sure to put foam underneath while tapping so your lid won’t break when it pops off.

The kiln creates a suction where the air is sucked out of the pot. Gently tap the lid with a wooden spoon to release the vacuum seal. The lids should pop off
@diananesbitt1260
@diananesbitt1260 3 жыл бұрын
If you haven't figured out how to get the lid off yet, I use a flathead screwdriver and very gently put down in the edge and carefully twist. As long as glaze isn't the reason it won't separate, it works greatl. If screwdriver is too thick then try a dinner knife.
@LoisHook
@LoisHook 3 жыл бұрын
Diana Nesbitt I did that. After pouring boiling water on some went into the pot and caused some pressure which helped. Problem was my lids were tight so not enough room down the side. Also the rims were thin. One broke badly. Used the grinding disk to grind if both sides of the rim. Another a bit broke off glued on with Mayco mud added to bisque fire and the glaze colour came out brown. (Smokey merlot one) so really two lost.

That bowl is what I call my midnight skies glaze. In side x3 obsidian if I want to keep the bottom of the bowl jet black I may do another coat there. Then Smokey Merlot 3 layers but graduated. Beautiful. I have a suggestion on the stuck lids. If you take a grinding stone and rub it on the bottom and then pat the bottom of the pot the shock will usually pop off the lid. But not if it is glaze stuck. I learned this from another potter many years ago.
