Technically you made a Quinzee, be careful the best safe way to do it is to create your compact snow pile the day before you wanna sleep in it (so it freezes overnight) after you carve from the inside like you did. Safe thing to do also is putting small wooden sticks through the roof so you see when to stop shoveling inside. One great trick is to use a single candle inside so it creates humidity and freezes the inside wall also. You use your bag to cover the entrance and you can sleep at 0 degrees when its -35 outside. Great video ! Have a good day

Also if you plan on camping in snow for more videos, great thing to do is to have your next morning clothes inside your sleeping bag so they are warm ;) And on long days outside, change socks during the middle of the day if you dont wanna get sick

@@FreakyHimmel Yeah as i said, the next day the snow gets super hard and it's safe to sleep in. If he went on top of his roof before going to sleep, it wouldn't have been as much strong. It's still a really nice thing to do, but if you're planning on sleeping with multiple people, you need great structure. I did once with 10 persons, it was huge. And maybe 5-6 with just a couple of people.

If you're going to be sleeping in the snow again, you need to get yourself a steel water bottle, one you can boil water in. Just before bed fill it, heat it, then wrap it in a shirt or something and put it in your sleeping bag. Keep it by your feet and it'll keep them warm for most of the night. A thirty hour emergency candle or a candle lantern in your Quinzee would also help to keep the worst of the chill off. Also try to keep a bit of wood for the morning, if you get overly chilled you'll be endlessly glad for a morning fire Lastly, directly before bed eat something fatty with protein (like a snickers bar) the digestion will keep you warmer.

A few tips.Goulash is soup your suppost to mix that can with 1 can worth of water. The reason your cold is because winter sleeping bags only work if you take your clothes off, they work by reflecting your body heat which it cant to if you have clothes on. I've tested both ways in Alaska.

Great stuff! You are doing great in the snow! Some tips; If you can, you want to raise to the floor in the “iglo” (the cold air is on the bottom. For your lighter, BIC is the best, but remove the child proof ring from the top, since with cold hand, you can not use it otherwise (just lift it up with knife or screwdriver and it pops out) and last, when sitting by the fire, put some pine under your feet, to keep the cold out. Keep it up and feel free to stay in Europe a little while! Can highly recommend the Nordics, specially Finland 👍 And yes, Goulash is great outdoors!

One big tip when srviving in the snow and making shelters like these is dont make ur entrance larger than ur backpack. If you make it abit smaler you can use the backpack as a sort off door and generate abitr of warmth inside, but remember to have a small opening for fresh air. This will also shield from eventuall wind and snow

Sleeping in the cold is a real challenge. Condensation is the biggest problem. Your breath carries enough moisture to soak you through. Best advice I ever received was to use a "tarp tent" inside of a bigger tent/structure. Then angle the tarp so that the sides carry the condensate away from you.

You need Sealskinz socks for extreme cold and perhaps warming a rock around the fire so you can put it in your sleeping bag where your feet are. Your extremities are cold because your body cuts circulation to them in order to protect your vital organs and brain from hypothermia. this is why the rest of the body feels okay. All of your blood is going there to keep it warm because it is too cold for it. Many do not understand that if your body and vital organs are cold it is because your body needs more heat. Adding something to keep the heat from escaping from your door would have made your igloo warmer too.

Love that you are trying new adventures! Some tips for the next time, take a water bottle with hot water and put it by your feet. Next, take something, like your bag, and cover that door! You want to minimize heat loss. And the last tip is to take a fresh pair of clothes for after you build your shelter. You need to get out of those sweaty damp clothes. As a bonus, you can take an empty water bottle into the shelter with you to pee in if you need to go in the middle of the night. Plus it adds warmth again in your sleeping bag.

Although I’m a complete camping novice, I imagine it would of been a good idea to stack more firewood for the morning as well as have a cover over the entrance of the shelter. Would of kept the heat in. Could also of kept the batteries warmer or the go pro! From what I’ve heard, snow shelters are excellent insulators, you can even have fire inside them if the enviro, ent is cold enough. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!

Try using a hot tent with a portable wood stove. It'd be a lot more enjoyable especially for winter camping. Great video.

I loved your little kid mentality. Being able to do something for the first time is exciting. A little tip for snow sleeping for you though, to keep warm is not always about layers of clothing or material. You would have kept warmer laying there in sweat pants and a hoody while inside your sleeping bag . You need air between your body and first layer of clothing. and so forth. My point here is Baggy. You want initially loose fitting cloths against your body. Look at it like this. If you put a candle inside a jar and light it. ( you being the flame ) it burns right ? but what happens when you put a lid on the jar ? the flame / heat goes out it stops burning. But if you just barely hold the lid over the top of the jar the flame still burns hot. Heat needs to move and then absorb. My winter coat is not a tight fit. My flannel I wear under that is not a tight fit. There is a good amount of air under it all . Also don't sleep with your arms in the sleeves of your coat. Keep them out near your chest. this also helps keep a pocket of air against your core and the door, you left it wide open. any heat you was generating inside your snow fort there just went out it. Anyways. fun video, enjoyed the watch hope the next time is a better sleep for ya.

How to Build a Quinzee Snow Shelter Step 1: Shovel a pile of snow into a mound 7 to 8 feet high and big enough around to hold two people once it is hollowed out. ... Step 2: Shape the mound into a dome and allow it to sinter for about 90 minutes. ... Step 3: Use the last foot of snow to make elevated snowbeds. Dig a narrow trench between the beds all the way to the ground. This allows cold air to flow down and out of the quinzee. Poke a small ventilation hole near the top of the dome. Building a quinzee will make you sweat. Prevent hypothermia by changing into warm dry clothes after you finish building your shelter.
