Today we see if 240Hz gaming monitors are the next best thing or just marketing. Can a NOOB tell the difference between a 240Hz and a 144Hz PC gaming monitor?

To make the test more scientific, you should have used an easier to run game like CSGO and capped the fps at 300 for the entire run (or any number above 240 that your system can run 99% of the time without dipping below). The reason for doing so is because having fluctuating fps is an additional uncontrolled variable that does have a tangible effect on the perceived smoothness of the game depending on how high or low it moves.

MattTheMightyMeme that’s untrue, 24 is used for movies as it gives it a more cinematic view. 30fps is smooth, but you can easily tell the difference between 30 and 60hz as it’s a night and day difference. Anything higher is unnecessary unless you get headaches under prolonged viewing. The law of diminishing return applies to refresh rate. The difference between 30 & 60 is massive while the difference between 60 & 120/144 are minute. Same goes for 120/144 to 240. You’re just using up more electricity and what you get in return.

Just discovered your channel, shoutout to both you and Anna. 240Hz will probably be something that very little of us will get over the next months coming with more expensive games in terms of graphical fidelity and technology. Allow me to be cynical: if developers were to prioritize optimization over graphics, all games would be smooth. I'm a mechnically-driven player so 1080p with the higher refresh rate is better for me in any given situation. It doesn't look weirder, it just feels better and all games benefit from it. Something I would actually recommend in terms of testing is if a person can tell, without cheating, if the game has motion blur or not with the highest refresh rate. Motion blur is often used these days to "smooth" the stuttery feel of 30 (because it IS stuttery) and, on a personal point of view, I started to develop syndromes similar to motion sickness.

If you turn off the FPS counter in the corner and just play I find it really hard to notice when a framerate is 75 or 120 or 90 etc. I just stop noticing because it's all still smooth as long as you have Gsync/freesync. I can't stand screen tearing so I always used vsync but after using gsync I can never go back. I thought people were exaggerating vsync lag but it just feels BAD after using gsync. Not to mention it's so freeing in terms of settings to just have to make sure your in a target fps RANGE rather then having to turn down settings to hit your monitors max HZ to avoid vsync drop stutters.

On top of that, its like you said: even the lowest requirement esports games that can actually reach 500 fps, like CSGO, Valorant, and Overwatch, so you know games that you can tone down and not make it an unoptimized mess, can't handle all the smoothness at that level. I would like to critique your methodology. In your tests, you run a 'control' in which you showed both 144 and 240hz, and labeled them as such. You then asked Anna to later identify them when displayed in a random unlabeled manner. While this may test whether or not it is physically possible to distinguish between the two experiences when specifically looking for a difference, it suffers from a biased focus of observation. Instead, I believe a better test would involve a subject instead simply be asked to rank their visual experience as 'better' or 'worse'; not specifying that the settings being changed are indeed the framerate. Further more, if the participant was a gamer, at the end, they could be asked what setting they believe had been changed. I believe such a revised method would better analyze the subjective experiential differences.

there will almost always be bias. people tend to think they can notice more then they can. and by telling them what is changing won't matter it will make them focus even harder to see if they can spot the difference. with clear out from all the videos I have seen people can't. People like to think that, oh I paid this amount to get this screen that has a bigger number so it must be better then my friends screen so therefor I have to say I can spot the difference or else I'm incorrect in it being better. I have seen so many of these kind of videos to the point where it is guesswork. people can't really see it. maybe a very few people with extremely good eye's can. but most won't be able to. And trust me people will be saying it again when you go from a 240hzx to a 360hz, or from a 360hz to a 500hz and so on. people will always claim they can spot the difference. it's so stupid.

The all run on all. Hz is how many pictures the screen shows per second The only possible downside is if a game has a max frame rate limit. IE, if it's capped at 60 and you have 240 Hz, it's going to make almost 0 difference.

I went from 20fps on ps4 pro to 60fps on pc, and then my old monitor broke and I see 30-60-90-120/144 but I don't see the difference between 144-240, but maybe need for speed hot pursuit doesn't support 240 but even it's ets 2 I can't tell the difference from 144-240. But honestly 60 is perfectly fine even a stable 30 is okay, although on low power pc's I try to get 40-45 fps. And thanks to the really bad fps on the ps4 pro I managed to play pay day2 on a potato at literally a consistent 3 fps. (But could be neither games can actually run at 240, I've only tested those 2 so far).

The 19inch one was good but it kinda died so I had to buy a new one, else I would have used it for longer probably ( or well I wasn't planning on throwing it away, still haven't actually, but I would have used it for a couple more years and then used it as back up or for console, since my current one only has hdmi and display port.

I plan to use it for gaming (gta5, deadside, battlefield4/5, starcraft 2...), and 3d modeling/rendering (autocad, maya, home planner...). I only have 4500$ to spend for everything. also if you are spending that much on a PC, especially the top one, there isnt a reason you shouldnt get a 2080 or 2080ti. that is where you will see the biggest difference in gaming and workstation performance. and if you are sticking with 1080p you might as well get a 240hz monitor. but there are 4k 144hz monitors if you want to get those.

I notice it tended to be roughly the same point in testing that you both started to mess up. Presuming vsync is off, what it might be is frame dips. Everything else being equal, 240 is noticable, but if the action is busy you might notice inconsistencies in frame timing more on the 240 which makes it "feel" worse than 144. In rare instances only, Doom is reportedly very well optimised, so generally what "feels" better is 240.

That's the thing, CSGO has a dramatic difference in mobile CPUs for some reason. Your CPU is bottlenecking it by a pretty substantial amount, even with a 3070 Max Q. I have a 10875H, it's pretty good, but the 11th gen counterpart gets about 100 more FPS on average on CSGO.
