In this video I review the results of a load I am working up to use for varmint hunting and plinking in a Ruger American chambered in .243 Win. The bullet is a 75 gr. Hornady V-max, the powder is Alliant Reloder 15, the cases are Winchester with a few reloads on them already, and the primers are Winchester Large Rifle primers.

Hey Gunnut the Hornady data calls for 75 Gr Vmax with a max charge of 39.3 gr’s RL-15 for 3300 FPS. but with a MAX charge 46.3 Gr’s of W760 for 3400 FPS. W760 is slower than RL-15, thus you could get tighter groups, higher velocity with less pressure.

My Ruger M77 in .243 likes Sierra 75 gr. hollow points with 44 gr. of Winchester 760 . Will shoot .520 in. groups @ 100 yds. The same bullet has taken wood chucks out to 500 yds. and a couple of large deer from 125 to 175 yds. I tried some factory Winchester 100 gr . soft points in it recently and 3 shots were in one ragged hole . This is one rifle I'll hang on to .

Gunut I don't what reloading data source you used, but the Alliant data for the 75 Gr V-Max Max load is 43.0 Gr's of RL-15 for 3400 FPS from a 24 in barrelReducing that by 10% would give you a starting load of 38.7 Gr's for 3060 FPS

VitoEb1978 Good question as its been awhile since I loaded this up. I'm guessing it was the Hornady manual. It seems to be a very conservative loading manual in general. I finally recognized that and am cross checking with more sources now. Thanks for watching!

Just wanted to pass that info on to you about the 75 Gr V-Max. Which seems to be great bullets with very high BC's. Just in case you decided to load those up again

VitoEb1978 I appreciate it! I may have to load some more and go a bit hotter and see how it does.

WOW!!! 43.0 Gr's? I'm showing 32.2 Gr's starting load at 2900 FPS with a spread to 37.8 Gr's at 3200 FPS. RED shows 39.3 Gr's at 3300 FPS. Looking at the 10th Edition Hornady. The 9th Edition was the same. My Sierra, Lyman and Speer Handbooks didn't list the Alliant RL-15. That tells the age. Yeah, Good idea to run more than 1 chart or manuel. I like the Speer because of the PSI (cup) specs I don't get from the others, each one gives info you don't get from the other then combine the info together for a better overall. In all there pretty good about the history of the gun and how it came about, I find that interesting to as to "Why?" Fixing to take a road trip and visit Sierra, then visit Star Line Brass next door in MO. Sierra changed it all in the 70's with that Boat Tail Spitzer, amazing round esp in the 308. Wishing I could make it on over to Hornady but...I wish. Amazing what Hornady has accomplished! Thanks for bringing that point up working with that 243 load, good idea not to run just one reloading book.

This is probably very out of date, but I think the load data you are using is very conservative. on average the .243 Winchester has a kinetic energy in the 2K Ft-lb area, meaning with 75gr projectiles my rule of thumb for do not exceed velocity is 3465 FPS. 75gr Amax going 3300 FPS in my opinion might be the target for velocities in the .243 Win.

I run that load with 42.4 grains of RL-15. They run about 3100 fps with minimal pressure signs🤷‍♂️

I've tried sierra 70 Gr Blitzking with Varget and RL15 and didn't get anything special, like you said yours were going pretty slow. I've shot a 95 Gr bullet up to 3200 without pressure signs so I think you have a very save soft shooting round but that might be what you're looking for! I will get some more sierras loaded up and try them a bit faster this time. Good shooting man!

Hey Gunut I haven't gotten to the 75 Gr weight in my 243 Winchester but I've gotten some very tights with the Nosler 70 BT and the Remington 100 Gr Core-Lots. Just wondering what brand and model of rest that you used for testing. As I shoot prone all the time. Thanks in advance :)

Early testing with H335 powder produce a group that could be covered by a quarter. My rifle is a Remington Model 770 with a 22 inch barrel, thank you for information about the Caldwell rest. May your powder stay dry :)

Wow. Your charge weights of powder are way low for that bullet weight. Max is 43 grains. I suggest going way up on powder load and watch what it does. You just might be impressed. Maybe even use a different powder all together.
