So one must not interrupt but must carry out the gilding in one session until the required thickness is achieved. Once a layer of gold has dried, you can't apply another layer of gold?

We understand this was extremely painful for many and deeply apologize. If we still had the knife, we would make a video finishing it. The video was purely a demonstration of plating and not meant to be a final plate. The customer was going to buff it all off and redo it, they just needed tips. We meant no insult to those with OCD and if we could do it again we would! :)

Electricity takes the path of least resistance so it's hard to build up material in corners. You could make a small custom anode to get the corners specifically. Powder coating tends to be light in corners as well.

The purpose of this video was to demonstrate the correct way to prepare the metal being plated and also the correct way to do the plating. We finished plating the entire blade (even next to the handle) off camera. The cotton sleeves shown are able to get into nooks and crannies such as the one near the handle. However, if it was a situation where it could not, the kit comes with our "Ultra fine-select Pen Plating Tips" which are more fine of a tip than a Sharpie Marker for doing hard to to get or small areas.

it would've made more sense to show us the knife as you received it by the customer and then the process of polishing, preparing and plating the whole knife to actually show us what a customer's item goes through throughout your service of gold plating it. I know the purpose of this video is to demonstrate the correct way to prepare the metal being plated and the correct way to do the plating. However, as i said, it would've made more to add more purpose to the video. That I think would've made the video more interesting and more satisfying to your future and current customers.

A lot of times these videos come as a need to answer a specific question, such as "How do I properly plate onto stainless steel?" or in this case "I followed all the steps but the gold is splotchy". In the interest of keeping the video short and to the point we typically keep it that way. That being said, you make a very good point and we will put a video like you mentioned in line to be done.

If you collect the gold liquid separate from the electrocleaner and activator it can be used again. It will just have less gold content in the leftovers and will take longer to plate with.

Do you mean using an AC Alternating Current? I am not an expert but.. Do Not use Main supply at 110 Volts or 240 Volts unless you want to Kill yourself. An Alternating Current would i think.. Put the Plating On, then take it Off. Then put it On.. then take it Off again, repeating at 50 Hertz , 60Hz or whatever frequency that you're using. I would caution you not to attempt to work with electricity until you've gained a thorough understanding of the science first. Including the lethal dangers.

Go through the normal process you would to gold plate an item but instead use the white gold you want to plate with.

Hello. Based on the information we have here and how we're interperating it, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong. The amps will only fluctuate when you complete the circuit and begin plating. It will then constantly change slightly as you move, change angles, etc. This is normal. If the plating is working, then it sounds like everything is fine. If it is not working, then we need to evaluate what is being done incorrectly or if there is some sort of issue with the hardware that has developed. Aluminum can be plated onto but the chemicals used in the process cannot be used on a consumer level so its possible but you would need to get them nickel plated or something before you gold plate them.

You could plate an item that has a brush finish but your gold will be as shiny as the part you are plating on. So if the surface is dull then the gold will plate on dull. I hope this helps.

I'm an electroplater for a living. You can do the same thing with silver. Same process with electrocleaner and nickel preplate. As nickel builds up it starts to look a bit more matte and dull but that is a bit hard to detect with just a flash of it. You'll have to just use good judgment as you go

Honestly it is hard to say. There is so many factors that come in to play like how thick the gold is applied, is it being used or touched often, is it inside or outside, etc.

Yes, we cleaned it with Toulene and then a little soap and water. You want to remove any of the polishing compound that is left on the surface.

Very similar but we have found toulene just works a little better. Whatever you can do to remove the polishing compound will work.

I didn’t think of this. I skipped the cleaning between polishing and electro cleaning. I experienced some burning during the nickel plating but not on the entire piece. I’m wondering if this is why.

Surface Activator is a dilute acid solution. However, the chemical used in this video is called "Woods Nickel Strike", which is a compound of multiple chemicals. It does include acid but it also includes other critcal components as well, such as nickel chloride concentrate.

I appreciate the reply, I actually tracked Woods Nickle Strike down on eBay. Does it take the place of a regular surface activator to wet out the surface or is this something different?

We sell Woods Nickel Strike on our website. Woods Nickel Strike's purpose is not to wet out the surface per se but it is used as the second step when plating onto steel/stainless steel. Woods makes it possible for the gold to adhere on stainless. Basically it does replace surface activator when plating onto steel, if you want to see it that way.

I'm ordering some right now but to clarify, since it doesn't take the place of a surface activator is the nickle strike sort of like it sounds and puts a light base coat of nickle on the stainless steel so that the gold can bond?

The violet color in the solution is actually the hardeners and brighteners in the solution. Without these, the solution would be water-clear. The gold is in a salt form before being dissolved into the solution. Only once the electrolysis happens does the gold get converted into metallic gold onto the cathode.

Theoretically you could apply how ever many coats as you want. Typically you only apply 1 coat as its not necessary to apply multiple coats. The longer you spend on your first coat the thicker the gold will be. However, if you decided you wanted to add more gold, you could go over it again and again.

Thank you! We're glad you love it! So are you saying its dull before you even plate it? You said "dull even after polishing and before polishing", not sure if that means you are polishing it AFTER you have gold plated it? You need to perform ALL the polishing you need to achieve the final luster you want prior to gold plating. Do not polish after you have gold plated, especially with our gold this is not necessary. Some peoples gold solution needs polishing after plating, ours does not. If you polish gold it will simply remove it and usually does not help the appearance. Only exception is if you have "burning". With burning, you can clean it up by polishing it with a mixture of baking soda and water made into a paste. This is the only situation where you should ever polish gold. You need to get the piece you want to plate to the shiny luster you desire before plating. Gold plating is the final touch, the "icing on the cake" if you will, so if you prepare the piece good, the gold plating will be good. If its dull before plating, it will be dull after plating. Hope this helps!

It's perfect upon gold plating as I polish the stainless steel and clean it, but when I golds plate it sometimes has a dull look in certain parts or hazy if that makes sense.
