In this video I head out to the tent for a late night run on a Friday after work. It's cold but stunning. Enjoying my time doing a little bushcraft and using the odd match too. Supper is cooked in the Coleman oven on the Coleman stove. And there's cooking on an open fire too. It was a perfect night and excellent for sleeping. I hope you enjoy it.
Feel free to share and like this video!
Here's a list of my videos so far from this winter tent season:
• Bush Camp Paradise. Bo...
• -27 C. AWESOME WILDERN...
Where do I live?
Northern Canada.
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the KZfaq training (watching) over the years.
What gear do I use?
Canon 90D camera
Rode videomicro
Sigma Art 18-35mm 1.8
Sigma Art 50mm 1.4
Canon 10-18mm stm
A cheap 15 yr old tripod
I do not live at the tent. I just visit whenever I can.

Improve your chance at life by always setting up the stove fire ready to be lit before you leave in case you do not have time to assemble a fire due to dark/cold etc on arrival.

Great tip...have done that myself. Best place is in our sauna bath...if you ever end up in cold water or whatever, a sauna bath may save your life.

Yep, at the very least have wood in out of the weather. If you've banked the fire while you're cleaning up and packing to leave - you should be able to quick empty any remains into a burn bucket to take outside and put in snow. Then you can get the next fire set up so you just have to light it as soon as you get there....then you can go about unpacking and gathering more wood, if there isn't enough already in the tent. If you're concerned about mice setting up home in the indoor wood pile, there is a product called: Fresh Cab, that's a Botanical Rodent Repellent. Its sold here in the States at Tractor Supply. It says its registered by the EPA as indoor safe. The pork looked excellent, found myself starving just at that moment, lol. Have a great week. Hey not trying to be critical but heck it looked really cold when you were fetching wood and trying to light the fire.

@@jaylegere The editing is quite good and a clip that comes to mind is the fur branch with dusting of snow on it. Nice to look at these simple things and have them etched in our memories. Standing in awe of the frozen lake you can hear the silence. The silence actually has a sound and a look.

Put some old short pieces of corrugated metal roofing sheets around the back and side of your stove to shield and keep the heat inwards.

@@jaylegere I'm using brick around the stove and a 4 gallon pot of water on top plus my side walls are insulated. But I have lots of holes in my walls since I did a primitive double wattle wall build. So I'm gonna add canvas walls on the exterior so I technically have a TENT and not a "shack." haha. I just talked to the permit planning department today. So definitely adding canvas walls.

Great video! Tip: build a small cover for your fire wood stored outside, a plastic sheet can do.... or even better, store it inside the tent to find it dry and ready to use anytime.... As others suggested, you can also leave a full load in the stove ready to be used. Also keep proper "fire starter" stuff around beside newspapers that can be wet and useless.

Jay, I think you should try to put 2 rows in 4-5 layers of bricks on each side of the stove (right and left side) right next to the stove sides to keep the warm temperature in the tent while you are slipping, that way you don't need to worry about waking up, I think it worth to try.

It's truly amazing how much wood you can go through. We have two wood burners in our house and a pizza oven, a cast iron chimenea and a fire pit outside so we really go through wood. But we scrounge wood all year long and use construction lumber, pallets and felled wood. All our neighbors and friends know to call us if there is wood laying around. But that means my husband does something with wood almost everyday. He says it's his gym workout. If he ever leaves me (we've been married 41 years) I'm just gonna get fake logs! Really enjoyed the video, just a spectacular evening.

Another good video Jay. My recommendation for helping to regulate the heat overnight, would be to get some metal sheeting behind the stove, plus perhaps add a base of stone or brick as well as a large stone or thick metal top on the stove, that can absorb some of the heat and will radiate for longer even after the fire dies down.
@jaylegere

@JMacGyver1
@JMacGyver1 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaylegere hey Jay, I did watch that video. Their metal backer around the stove will only be part of the solution. That will help keep more heat radiating into the space, but you really need something of sufficient mass to absorb the heat and help temper the cold. Just like in a home with a wood stove, they’re generally made with heavy cast iron. You could just stack rocks on top before you go to sleep, and that should help some.
