Thank you. I pulled out of your "25 ideas" 10 strategies or tactics I can use to find things to draw because I heard themes throughout your discussion. You've opened up a whole world of opportunity for us. I like to break things down into what should I do... not necessarily what should a draw, and you have sprinkled great ideas for me to explore throughout this wonderful video. Here are the first three. 1. Zoom in. 2. Use a viewfinder. 3. Focus on the parts not the whole, and etc., I very much appreciate the dedication and effort you put into your videos.

Thanks so much! Yes, yes and yes to your takeaways. I thought about doing a video just about composition, but some of my patrons seemed keen to have concrete ideas with PleinAirpril still in full swing! 😊

i like drawing because it helps me develop as a realist....ilke to draw in people in real situations ...it helps me to capture the real drama of life the world as a stage and we are merely its actors.

Because of your influence, I bought a view finder about a year ago. What a useful little tool that lives up to its name. It's so helpful in isolating elements of a painting or finding just the right composition. Thank you for your 25 tips! Great video.

Another great spot to paint is in cemeteries. Headstones are super interesting...the shadows on the letters and carvings.

I’m not a plein air painter, but I do see things the same way you do. I take reference photos with my phone, then work on the painting in my garage. Cropping, finding beauty in the mundane, just looking. Thanks, the countryside makes me homesick.😊

Thank you for all of this! You inspired me to do Pleinairpril. April 1, 2024 was my first Plein Air painting. This video is perfect timing for me. I have loads of things around me (rural Northwest Montana) but I was not zooming in (enough), although I was using a View Catcher and after I think a short of yours ... my camera to help. As 2nd half of Pleinairpril got underway, I regrouped and told myself to select simpler subjects/scenes. The first thing I then painted was my front door :) It was fun, I was fairly pleased with the result and it kind of gave me my 2nd wind! ❤❤❤

That's terrific! Montana would be a DREAM to paint, but yes, overwhelming if you're trying to put it "all" in every time! It sounds like you're doing great choosing more simple ideas. For a daily challenge, that's definitely a more sustainable option. I hope the rest of your month goes well! :)

Hi Leslie, sometimes when the weather is off, I'll pull out a sketch book and make a painting from a sketch painting and add or subtract elements or change the light and shadows.. when you refered to the field as boring, I was like wait! Lol..and then you started on all the possiblities..I really need to paint more buildings, barns, and sheds..thankyou for the encouragement.
@LeslieStroz

Yes, the more experienced artist wouldn’t think it was boring, but the funny thing is that when I told my husband (who isn’t a visual artist) I was going to this field to film a video he asked, “Why are you going there? It’s so boring!” 😅

Love your ideas. I have trouble finding inspiring scenes to draw/paint. Do you recommend getting a view finder or will the camera on my phone work just as well to frame compositions?

A camera viewfinder works, but I think a viewfinder is better since you are actually looking with your eyes and not through a distorted lens. You can make a view finder out of cardboard. 😊

i actually am having this problem, im a student at my loval art accademy and im having problem finding problem with my illustration, i always fell like all the ideas i have are not worthy of my time and my high qualiti material, which i don't want to waste, sometime i even throw away some drawing because the process is not satisfing me... i have the most high quality brushes, paper and watercolor paints someone coud ask for, and im not able to use them because i fell like very little to none idea are woth my time, effort and materials, how can i come out from this dark tunnel?
@LeslieStroz

I think that's a normal anxiety for artists. Maybe you could use your less expensive supplies and a sketchbook to go around and do some more simple, daily sketches? If you do those often enough you will build the confidence and desire to delve into using your more precious items. As far as brushes go, as long as you take care of them, they should last you years, so defintely use those! Best of luck to you! :)

@@LeslieStroz thank you, I will definitely try your suggestions! also, may i ask you one last thing? I heard about the Daniel Smith drama where some colors were said to be lightfast while they're not (pigments like aureolin PY40, anthraquinoid red PR177 or Prussian Blue PB 27), I'm not sure if I should trust the brand or people who say these pigments are fugitive, letting a pigment fading under direct sunlight is not a professional way of measuring, so the doubt is still relevant and hard to clarify, is it better to just trust the brand? Companies like Daniel Smith and Winsor & newton are very well known and have been producing paint for decades so...
