This tool can change your art! It can act as a calculator to help you "check" your work, function as an angle checker, and can also help teach you how to draw. It's one of my most prized art tools and is an important part of EVERY art kit I have ever had.
If you'd like to purchase one of your own, the best place to find them is in art stores that have architectural sections. They are called many things, including an academic divider, an architectural divider, a divider, a plain divider and an adjustable drawing tool. Some current brands that make them are Staedtler, Alvin, Jakar, and ECobra. I recommend doing a google search to see where you can find one in your corner of the world.

I've been using dividers since the mid 80s. I was introduced to them in drafting class in high school. It is a tool which is in all drafting kits. This was a time when blueprints were still done by hand before computer aided drafting was introduced. We were taught to use them in different but similar ways to the ones shown in this video. They are usefulful for geometric construction, drawing polygons, bisecting angles, transferring measurements as well as the use it was named for which is dividing lines into equal segments. Proportional dividers are used to scale measurements up or down in drawings. I adapted dividers to art in many of the same ways as in the video. I also have a few other drafting items I use for drawing such as circle templates, French curves, drafting triangles, and flexible rulers, among other things. One big trick I developed is using a compass (used for drawing circles) as dividers. just replace the lead with another metal point and you have a set of dividers which can be adjusted very accurately and you never have to worry about accidentally changing the measurement. It's also helpful having several pairs of dividers or compasses so you can set different ones to different measurements to repeatedly use throughout the drawing without having to reset them or worry about absentmindedly using the wrong measurement.

I have a nice simple brass pair which was part of a drafting set my dad bought about 100 years ago. I have used them occasionally to check proportions but I always felt it was cheating! Mad. I never thought about using them for checking angles but I did bolt a couple of small steel rulers together to perform the same task, but again I thought I was cheating and would just hold my pencil up. I hope this tutorial has convinced that part of me that it isn’t cheating andI should start using them regularly.

If you’re going to have something (divider) in your off hand anyway, why wouldn’t you use a proportional divider? It can do all the same things as the regular divider, but so much easier and more accurately. It measures everything directly so you don’t have to worry about picking a unit measurement and estimating the leftovers”. And of course you can still use it to train your eyes by measuring after you have put something on the paper
@LeslieStroz
@LeslieStroz 13 күн бұрын
You can use the proportional dividers to do all of this to a certain degree, but the tips are very blunt and unless you have an expensive one they aren’t as accurate. Most of them also don’t hold the position (you have to hold it to keep it from slipping). For more precise measurements I would definitely recommend a divider. 😊

I appreciate your video, however, your drawing of the jar was off. The bottom curve was way deeper than you drew and the lip at the top was almost straight. For a video that is teaching proportional drawing, the sketches should be as close to identical as you can get. Sorry

Such a shame you can’t appreciate what someone is showing you without finding fault. Leslie was doing a rough sketch to show how you can use the divider and she was really thorough in showing the use of this simple tool for drawing. If you want perfection, then perhaps you should have a channel showing how perfectly everything should be done. Just a suggestion of course.

She also did clearly state that she is drawing from real life not from the photo, causing the angle to be slightly different.
