I used to build mass firebats as a kid against Protoss because of the table near the end of this guide where it has units vs their counters, because it said the counter to "Zealots" was "Firebats" It also famously said the counter to Dragoons was Dragoons/Reavers, but I was too annoyed by the slowness of the reaver to ever use it as a kid. It never occurred to me to use Shuttles so they'd take like 5 minutes to crawl across the map

to be fair firebats are not terrible vs zealots but not the greatest XD i think the part that stuck with me the most is its custom map melee guide it had, it gave an example on how to make a 1v1 vs a very hard AI and it was pretty differcult with the settings it gave it required like a zerg opponant starting off with a number of bonus things vs you.@@himethisisme

I don't have the prima starcraft strategy guide, but I do have the Brady games strategy guide. The author had a massive brainfart when writing that one, because on Brood war Terran 4 - the one where you kill 4 hives and bring Duran to the Psi disruptor. They repeatedly call overlords overminds, and it tells you to kill the overminds to prevent dropping on the low ground and to supply block the zerg. It has tons of tiny errors like that

Yeah holy shit I'm wondering if using flare on the reavers themselves might also have some use cases. But the shuttle is better prio. Apparently Boxer flared observers with cloak wraith followup back in the day lol

Hi, I'm the author (yep, Bart Farkas). When I was writing the first Starcraft book, Blizzard had already released Warcraft and it was very successful. I wrote both of these Starcraft books in a darkened testing office in Irvine at Blizzard's campus there (basically LA), because the software was not allowed to leave the building (for obvious reasons). I wrote both books entirely by the seat of my pants working with a beta and almost entirely on my own. Ultimately, I'm happy with how they've stood up. And yep, when I was working on the first (the original) StarCraft book I remember telling both Bill Roper and the publisher that this was going to be a big hit.

If you’re Zerg or Protoss yes. Can make sunken and cannon. Terran however would be incredibly hard but not impossible would just need a shit fuck ton of minerals to keep attacking with them

For the longest time I was confused why the Zealot HP/Shield was different in the book until I realized there were actually like 3 balance patches before they stopped touching it.

Hey there, I wrote the book. This doesn't surprise me because back then Strat guides were written on betas and had to be finished before the final polish on the game happened. This is because it took two weeks to print the book and get it to stores to be there on the day the game released. So basically, those stats were given to me directly from Blizzard probably less than wee before the book went to press, but Blizzard was still tweaking those numbers right until the end, so that 2-3 week gap is why the numbers in the book are likely wrong.

Also I have to say I adored these books as a kid, reading them was almost as fun as playing the games.
