🤠 What has the 270 Winchester Accomplished? Well, for starters, my last Bull Elk - a 330" 7x7 and one of several dozen that I've shot - was with one shot at 450 yards that dropped right in his tracks! My Grandfather, however, used to cull the elk herds near Yellowstone Park and killed more than 500 Elk with his (Mostly BIG BULLS Too)! He also killed 3 Record Book B&C Moose (including the former #3 in the World), a Top 5 B&C Bison (weighing nearly 2 tons, as I believe the largest officially on record is 3,850 lbs), a 190" class B&C Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, 2 Record Book Mountain Goats, a Woodlands Caribou, Multiple Bears (including Grizzlies), etc...He has killed many trophies and every critter native to North America! If anyone tells you the the 270 Winchester is "inadequate" for anything in North America, they are Lying to you! 🤥 Enough Said! 🤑

I have both rifles and I hand load for both, but my first choice is 7 mm Remington mag, but the Winchester 270 is excellent as well ! PS. It pretty well depends on the hunt 👍

Hi fromAustralia, I reload a 140 gr Berger hunting bullet for the 7mm for pigs and wild dogs using 68 gr of reloader 22 and get 3350 fps and 3400 ft-lbs of energy (with no pressure signs)which is a lot more performance than the 270 👍 Rifle is a 112 savage 26 in barrel

I live and hunt in western Canada. I have and use both the 270-7 RM primarily loaded with 150gr and 160-175gr respectively. I have shot elk, moose, deer (whitetail/muley) and black bear with them. I’ve never had any issues with either of them and I take them out only based on how I feel at the moment. However I’m 50yrs of hunting I have never had a grizzly charge me that is depicted in the video. I hunt extensively in grizzly country and see them every year. There have been attacks and most are often hikers/hunters encountering sows with cubs. We hear of incidents in Montana/Idaho of bears coming upon hunters during skinning and gutting but I’ve never heard of that here. Most encounters are in Federal and provincial parks on hiking trails.

It is all fascinating. The best cartridge is the one you have faith in. 270 is all I need in this region.

I have a few bush bush rifles for big game , but this year I purchased a weatherby vanguard badlands in 270win. And As usual ,hunted in thick brush, for this years moose hunt, I took down a small bull , 537lb , on 26/09/2023...... I was prepaired for a long shot. But it happened to be very close at a distant of 44 yd.... I had quickly switched to a sellier&belott 150gr round nose. A lung shot , .....the bullet jacket peeled off inside the first rib... Through the lungs and the other rib and was a pass through....the moose only took a few steps. .... Just wanted to say that the round nose had worked as well as my larger caliber bush gun at close range.... Velocity was around 2600fps..... Slow for a 270. But worked in this distance,,,,, freezer is full.

My 11 year old grandson and I just got back from South Africa the first day Zader made a 95 yard 1 shot kill on a big bull Nyala with his savage axis chambered in 7mm-08 that I loaded with a 150gr hornady eldx. The 2nd day of the hunt we ranged a big bull Kudu at 622 yards our ph and I closed the distance to 451 yards and I made made the decision to use Zader’s rifle over my 30-06. I took the shot and the Kudu didn’t go 10 yards. Zader made another 1 shot kill on a bull Gemsbok that same day. The next day we went after Cape buffalo and I made a 140 yard shot with a 400gr nosler partition charged by 96gr of R26, 2300 fps with mild recoil. The next day Zader made a 189yard 1 shot kill on a nice bull impala and 95 yard 1 shot kill on a nice bull springbok. The next morning he made a 265yard 1 shot kill on a big boat warthog. And to finish off the hunt I shot a 291/2 inch blue wildebeest at 323 yards. All one shot kills although I did put 2 more 400 gr banded solids in my 43 inch buffalo.

Interesting information.70 year old long time hand loader here so these comments apply to hand load data although there may be some factory ammo that will match these numbers. The following is from the newest Nosler manual plugged in to the Shooters Calculator for a fair apples to apples comparison. Both are 160 grain Nosler Partitions sighted dead on at 250 yards. 270 Winchester, BC .434, SD .298, 24" 1/10 twist. Muzzle velocity 2828 fps, Muzzle energy 2842 ft lbs. With the above stated 250 yard zero this load reaches its apex 3.4" above the line of sight at 150 yards before falling to 4.08" low at 300 yards with remaining velocity of 2226 fps and 1761 ft pounds of energy. At 350 yards its not quite 10" low with 1617 ft lbs remaining energy. At 400 yards it's down 17.1" while still clocking 2043 fps with 1483 ft lbs remaining energy. For elk size game this should give a maximum effective point blank range of somewhere between 275 and 300 yards. Your mileage may vary. No notes or charts to consult or dials to turn while your target is disappearing. For the .284 160 grain Partition BC .475, SD .283 with a 24" 1/10 twist barrel in the 7 mag, Nosler shows the top obtainable velocity at 3072 fps with 3353 ft lbs muzzle energy which is hotter than the load shown in your chart. This load reaches its apex also at 150 yards at just 2.74" above the line of sight. That's less than 3/4" better than the 270W. At 300 yards the 7 mag is still carrying 2202 ft lbs and down 3.25". Still only about 3/4" better than the 270. At 350 yards it's still got 2046 ft lbs and down a little less than 8". By the time it gets to 400 yards it's 14" low with 1898 ft lbs remaining energy. This load should give the 7 mag a maximum effective point blank range about 50 yards better than the the 270 Winchester. The 7 mag definitely holds a numbers advantage but at any ethical shooting distances no elk, deer, caribou, moose etc is going to know the difference. The Acccubond bullet has better numbers, but it is not as tough as the Partition. Also I submit that there are very few hunters, especially the weekend hunter, who can consistently keep shots in the kill zone much past 300 yards under hunting conditions. Wind, cold, rain, lack of a good rest, difficult shooting positions all take their toll. I think a great compromise is the standard 280 Remington or better yet the 280 Ackley Improved which gets close to 7 mag without the problems associated with belted cases. Another interesting comparison is the grandaddy 7x57 Mauser. Although it can propell the 160 grain Partition a little faster it can really shine with the 175 grain Partition which has a ballistic coefficient of .519 and sectional density of .310. At a muzzle velocity of just 2574 fps out of a 22" 1/9 twist barrel zeroed at 250 yards, it's obviously not as flat shooting as the 270 or 7 mag, being 4.13" high at 150 yards, but at 300 yards It's only down 4.77" with 1702 ft lbs remaining energy. Down 11.5 at 350 with 1582 ft lbs. Down 20" at 400 with 1469 ft lbs. That's pretty impressive for a cartridge that's over 125 years old. I have a friend who who grew up hunting in Africa who's taken a lot of Africa plains game up to the size of Kudu with the 7x57. Today he still hunts in Africa and arranges Safaris. Here's some FYI for your younger viewers who may have never heard of Jack O'Connor or never read any of his writings. As you pointed out although Jack was known for his affinity for the 270 Winchester, he hunted with many different caliber rifles. In fact although he killed just about everything on the North America continent, including Grizzlies, with the 270, in his "Complete Book of Rifles and Shotguns", he wrote (paraphrased here) " If I could have just one rifle to hunt the world over, it would be the 375 H&H Magnum. If I could have a second rifle, it would be the 270 Winchester". Also the Model 70 Winchester, not the 54 became known as "The Rifleman's Rifle". Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

There's factory ammo available in the 270 with the 130 at 3200fps and the 150 at 3000 fps so if someone isn't using the 175s in 7 RM, there really isn't any difference.

I have a model 77 Hawkeye in 7 mag. Don’t use it much because it to much power for deer in my area of Pennsylvania. However I am taking it to Africa this fall for plains game. It’s my dream hunt. I prefer my mod 77 in 308 for most of my hunting. I like it better than one of my 30-06s. I don’t own a 270 but will definitely get one someday

With all the new fangled cartriges out there, still cant beat the good ol .270 win. I am in the market for a wyoming game harvestor. I have looked at all the 6.5 craze. Great for wind drift, but honestly i still cant see any reason to buy anything but the .270 for hunting. I do have a .300 win mag also, i bought years ago.

Everything from Hares to Wapiti with my 270. Saying that it wrecks a lot of meat with shoulder shots on big game so I try and neck or head shoot everything. I’m primarily a meat hunter in New Zealand. Fallow and Red deer are my main targets. We get to hunt all year around here so we get plenty or real world experience in performance. I bought a Weatherby back in the early 90’s as it was one of the few with a MOA or less accuracy guarantee. I hand load Barnes 130gr TTSX for most animals.

I have a beautiful Winchester 270 and also a really nice Remington rifle in 7 mm mag, I like them both very much but my preference is the 7 mm mag

My two deer rifles are both savage left handed 111/110s and one of them is chambered in 7 mm magnum with a 24 inch barrel and the other is chambered in 270 with a 16 and three-quarter inch barrel. I love both cartridges! But the 270 is a little bit more efficient for shorter barrels. The 270 actually fare is much better than you would expect out of a shorter barrel.

Excellent video as usual. I own both, they each are excellent. Took my first Arizona bull elk with .270 Savage American Classic using a basic 150 grain Remington Core Lokt cartridge - fantastic rifle. Well placed shot (lucky) and elk dropped straight away. But my go to elk rifle is the 7 MM Rem Mag. in a 24 inch Howa 1500 with a custom muzzle brake - big medicine, perfect balance of power and moderate recoil.

The 270 operated at much higher pressure they went with the 277 bullet so 93 Mauser and other weaker actions could not be rechambered to the 270 and several also the model 70 was a good action and give really good accuracy so it got the reputation of being very accurate and a good killer

I taken so many deer with my 270 it's not even funny. After pursuing PRS matches, I ended up switching over to 6.5 CM because the cartridge treated me well in competition and I was so familiar with the reloading and components did I switch my hunting rifle to a 6.5 CM Bergara. I just purchased a 28 nosler because I want to venture into the 7mm zone. I will also be purchasing or building a 280 AI pretty soon. Thanks for your great breakdowns.

The tide is turning for the wonderful. 270win. I just bought a Browning Xbolt western hunter with a 24" 7-1/2 twist barrel. There are some awesome heavy weight .277" bullets that have recently come out, the 165gr accu bond long range and the 155gr Barnes LRX come to mind. Can't wait to wring it out, the .270 win is getting a rebirth making it even more versatile.

Basically both cartridges are so equal that there is no practical difference at any distance. Most people couldn't hit a 12 inch target at 500 yards under the best conditions.

I shoot the 140 grain Sierra Gamechanger in my 270. In that particular loading, I am right on the heels of the 7mm Rem. mag. The difference in bullet drop, and energy is not really enough for me to consider in my hunting ventures. Yes the 7mm is a bit faster than the 270, but at the sacrifice of more muzzle blast, and recoil that is out of proportion for the slight gain in speed over the 270. That being said, this is a very well done comparison. Easy to understand and right on in terms of the facts.

Back in the late 80s I was shopping for a caliber. I noticed that the 270 and the 7mmMag had similar ballistics both in 150 grain bullets. I did not know about BC at the time. I chose the 7mm for range and ability to shoot larger North American game. In retrospect good choice. The G1 is created for round nosed bullets and is dependent on velocity. So it changes. The G7 is created for modern spire point bullets and is based off Doppler so MV is not a factor. Apples to apples. Use the G7. If you look at these charts you can see that you can run a 162gr bullet faster and with less drop from a 7mm. That’s reverse of the norm. Just saying. Also live my 6.5cm. Same kind of reasons. They are all purpose driven. I usually hunt deer at 75-100 yards. 243. I shoot hogs out to 300 6.5. I shoot anything out to 400 with a 7mmMag. Haven’t done elk or moose yet but I feel comfortable. Right now I am waiting on my 7mm to come back with a heavier barre, different twist for heavier bullets and get to 1000. Fun science.

We talking new70 or the .270? Higher twist rate rifles are being manufactured these days which brings it up to a more modern standard.

While I don't HATE either cartridge (I don't own either), I would tend to go for something in the middle - slap bang in the middle - the 280 Remington, which is basically the 7x64 Brennekke with a different name. Yes, I know that there's no factory ammo, I also know that there are no or few factory rifles (unless you get the Brennekke and go for European rifles). It shoots all the Magnum projectiles, so heavy bullets are not a problem - I LIKE a heavy projectile - so I'd be looking at 160 to 175 gr bullet, which makes it "better" than the 270 - yes, bullets are better nowadays, so lighter bullets work as well as heavier ones did years ago - at least on thin-skinned game. But, this is my fantasy and I'm allowed to choose what I want.

Tool for the job. 270 145 grain great for long distance up to mule deer. Any bigger game, 7mm all day.

270 is usually a lighter gun and less expensive to shoot.

My two oldest daughters did a really nice thing this year, pitched in, and bought me a Chital deer hunt this year, down here in Central Tx. I think I will use my beloved 270 to hunt that Axis deer and will be working up a load. I was thinking about a 140gr Partition and RL-19 powder for the hunt. As I familiarize myself with Axis deer, it might just do the trick but if you have some recommendations, I'm all ears! Thanks John!!!

Their both well respected calibers though personally if i had to chose one it would be the 7rem mag, and then get a 7mm08 to compliment them both. Use which ever one would be best for the hunt im going on. Also you can use the same bullet in each for reloading. Same as 308/300wm. That is something you cant do with the 270.

The 270 can barely push a 150 grain bullet past 2,700 fps. A 7 rem mag can push a 150 grain at almost 3,100 fps. 270 is good. But why not just get the 7mm? And on average you’re only using about 10 more grains of powder to get that much more performance. It’s kind of a no brainer in my book. Plus the 7mm is a supreme long range cartridge just for days where you wanna take it out and shoot. There’s a lot more versatility in that regard. But that’s just me.. I like being able to launch heavier bullets at around 3,000 fps. That’s optimal for being able to take large game out past 500 yards if you feel like you can confidentially make a shot. I’d say if you want a 270 get the 270 weatherby mag.

Any game animal out to 300 yards would not know the difference. This is both being 150 grain partition bullets. Hitting the armpits is the main thing.

I own both and love both. But the good ol .270 win just seems to be my favorite probably cuz that’s what my grandpa had me use to kill my first deer

Was about to get a 7mm rem mag, but it ain’t worth it anymore since 7mm PRC came out.

Simple out to about 300 yards almost the same but after that the 7 mm outshines just my 2 cent

Note: Its probably easier to reload the 270...just because it doesn't have that "belt line"...

Dont now why you dont compare same bullet diameters,284 vs 284 in this case. Beter comparison vould be 280 rem or Ai vs 7 mm rem. Yust my opinion. Anyway great video👍

I've had one shot kills with my 270 on deer, black bear and moose. I guess no one told the moose that he was shot with an old cartridge 😂😂😂Plus it has significantly less recoil with the 270 and I can opt for a lighter rifle. So I'm not sure why I would buy a higher kick 7MM with more expensive, less available ammo. BTW - if I would want to hunt with a 7MM I would opt for a 7MM PRC. Which essentially makes the old 7MM obsolete. I would stay way from big brown bear country with either one of these.
