Brings me back to 1965 high school, I had. 283 in a 55 Chevy

The carb you need for that intake is a rochester 4jet made in the 50's & early 60's.

Put the same manifold on my 283, but went with a Rochester 4 jet. What heads are you running? Went with the 416 heads from an 80s 305 HO which have 58 cc chambers and 1.84/1.50 valves. Bumps the compression up nicely on these little 283s.

a sbc 283 can pretty much tolerate ANYthing. But grinding off that carbon on the block/intake mating surfaces, and associated steel filing right into the lifter valley? Common you may as well start this engine off without steel filings in the oil man. My thing is 283's and you just disrespected it.

What and were did you get the four barrel carb what car?

Exhaust is way too small

The correct carburetor for that intake is the Rochester 4 jet 4 barrel. Rare, but they’re still around.
