I responded to an ad that read High Performance 283 and decided to reach out to the seller , I committed to purchase the engine and the seller was nice enough to hold it for me. I wanted the angle plug cylinder heads that turned out to be not what I was hoping for. We are going to do a 2 part teardown for this interesting old school build , part 2 will follow soon!

I put a 283 into an s10 in highschool with my brother and it wasn’t fast by any stretch but it did wicked brake stands and burnouts lol

SB engines are very interchangable with parts. Balancers interchange and hi-rev motors do better with larger balancers ie: L-79s, 302 Z-28, etc. Back in the olds days it was cheaper to build 283-327s than it was to build 350s and that's what many hot rodders did. The angle plug head put the plug closer to the exhaust valve for better combustion (most all modern engines do that for that reason) and it should be noted that domed piston design was critical when using those heads because the relief needs to line up with the plug. Those pistons are designed for use with standard straight plug heads. Most 283s and 327s used the same 62-64cc chamber after 1962 and those heads should be around 64cc as well. Old chevies are still great!

I have never seen a big harmonic balancer that big on a 283 before

I was wondering that myself, I have a F150 blocking my garage still waiting for parts but will finish the teardown as soon as it is out of there. I want to get the pan off and see what's in there.

@@jaysgarage3616 , get a close up picture of the rear crank where the bolts holes is for the flywheel, My 283 looks totally different but it's still all original and still has the power pack heads on it , And if you install a 327 crank in that 283 block it turns into a 307 , I have a 307 in my 68 Chevy Truck , And if you put that 283 crank in a 327 block it turns into the 302 like the first Gen Camaro had , although it won't be a true DZ 302

@@jimthomas1989 I will get all that and finish the teardown. The piston # was for a 283 so I dont think it is larger than a 287 but we will see soon. This engine was a very old build , It seems to have a Manley cam kit from the 70.

Hay Jay I noticed that the spark plugs where going out at an angle I'm wondering why they are that way because most small block chevy stick out straight.
@jaysgarage3616

Hey Ray , Angle plug heads back in the day were an over the counter (GM) cylinder head designed to work with the large dome piston engines as the moved the plug higher in the chamber to promote flame travel , this was the intent however in the 90s Camaro LT1 engines the aluminum heads on those were also angle plug heads. I tried to explain some of this in part 2. Thanks for watching.
