The washer’s Gear Case Oil Seal prevents the gear case oil from leaking through the input shaft opening in the gear case.
Today, Bill from Point and Click Appliance Repair will take you step by step through this washer repair so you can learn how to replace your washer’s Gear Case Oil Seal (part number 285352) on your own.
WARNING: Before starting any appliance repair, always make sure that the appliance is completely disconnected from its power source by unplugging it. This tutorial is meant to be a guide and should not be used in place of the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer.
For this repair, you will need:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Spanner wrench
- Hammer
- Pair of channel locks
- Pliers
- Ratchet with extension and a 7/16 socket
- ½ inch socket
- ¾” Socket
- Lube

Great work you changed the seal but didn't replace or add any oil! Guaranteed not to leak without oil in it! BRILLIANT!

This should be titled "How to turn a 10 minute job into a 60 minute job". You never ever have to remove the back panel on these washers for any repair. You don't have to remove the transmission either to replace the input seal.

Quick question, why would some one have to replace the gearcase oil seal? Will the washer not agitate or spin properly? Or will the clothes come out with oil stains after every wash? Thank you

@@DeeOne88 Oil is needed to lubricate the gearbox or it wears out and seizes. Oil leaks on the floor. No it doesn't damage the clothes

U don't hav 2 unplug all these wire plugs. Just unplug the washer.

Hi, Bill: Thank you for your video, it's very helpful. However, please notice that you installed one of the motor grommets backwards, hence, the motor and transmission shafts might be misaligned. Regards.

Great video except for one thing! If the washer was leaking oil, shouldn't you have shown how to refill the transmission with proper oil?

That’s what I was thinking. Granted the amount of oil/grease under mine is not a lot but it’s occasionally making a howl on some spin cycles. I wanted to fill it up with a new seal, replacing the whole tranny on an old washer is probably not worth it.

@@williammchugh4361 I just checked my Hitachi apt sized washer and no gearcase! LoL 🤐 it's got a motor off to one side with a belt running to a pully under the agitator! Now I gotta figure this out! LoL!

@@barryc733 I found out you can not really refill this oil though the seal location because it's too thick. Only way to really do it is to open up the gearbox completely. When my washer started making a slight momentary howl during the start of the spin cycle I had no idea I was going to end up Rebuilding Half the damn Thing! But, it's getting to that point. I bet your gearing/and or clutch is above that pulley.
