Blender! It's worth mentioning that Blender has the full rigging toolset, as well as frame animation. In the 3D realm, Freestyle offers some great NPR rendering options for linework and all that. Finally, the new Eevee engine is capable of great toon shaders, if you know how to wrangle a node network. All in all, steep learning curve if you want to get the full power out if it, but totally worth it! All it costs is time and persistence.

@@kdsketch Actually, Autodesk has student license for Maya and it's free. Using free softwares is good in some certain point such as improving your technics as a student or, if you already run your own company. Otherwise, if you have plans on working in a studio as a professional then you have to learn the actual tools that industry demanding on. Wandering too much in free softwares will just waste your time.
@kdsketch
@kdsketch 5 жыл бұрын
@@Authersinemascop Yeah I had the student license when I was at uni - it's only free for three years and after that you have to pay which you can't avoid because you need to keep practicing while job hunting - once you've got a place in a studio then they'll provide the license (usually). A lot of the time people worry about what software is the 'best' but really it's just down to your skill, knowing the software you've got and just improving on that :)

Somehow, this is the clearest and most useful explanation of 2D software so far. Really interesting, especially about Open Toonz! I'd assumed it was mostly a gimicky software but I'll definitely have to give it a look! :) What would you say is your no.1 tip for learning Harmony? I've been meaning to get into it but it has so many features and just feels a bit intimidating to a newbie!
@kdsketch
@kdsketch 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hollie! I just hope it helps, a lot of people new to animation see the pricetag of the software for TVP and Toonboom and think they'll never be able to animate because the software's just too expensive. That and it's always nice to know there's free alternatives out there because who doesn't love free stuff haha :) I've been thinking about giving OpenToonz a try too because it looks pretty decent (and it's been updated since it's initial release to make things a little smoother I think). I'm saving up for Harmony at the moment, I probably would have bought it when I was in uni if they had the discount for students to buy it like TVP does. The best way to get to grips with it is to watch a lot of tutorials and to make stuff with it. OnionSkin has quite a few good tutorials for Harmony I think :)

I'm really glad you found the video helpful! The more expensive ones are 'professional grade' and are typically used in the industry by studios/shows where if you get a job there they'll already have the license - I use TVPaint 11 Pro as my main because I learnt it at uni (and I got a massive discount 😂) but I think it's worth it. If you're just starting out though I'd definitely go with the free versions, a lot safer than spending 2k on a software then realising you don't like it/want to use it anymore. You've honestly made my day with your comment, I'm so glad you like my stuff! I'll have to do something special for 100k when we get there 😂

I use PS and it's got a lot of pretty amazing and powerful tools, it's just lackluster when it comes to managing larger groups of layers, onion skinning, etc. One of the more iconic duos is PS + AE. You can pretty much do anything your mind can imagine with that duo. If you wanna throw in blender, since it's free, you can compete with large studios in quality and visuals so long as your animation is only a few seconds long. Total learning curve for all 3 would be around 2-3 years. Highly recommended.

I also think the breadwinner is lovely.

Currently, I use Toon Boom Harmony 16 Premium and edit in After Effects CC and Sony Vegas Pro 16 but your reviews of each of these softwares gives me hope that other newer creators who are beginning to get into the industry won't have to struggle with money because their interests got the better of them. Animation is such a hard thing, but note that using professional programmes does not make you a professional. I can't say I'm a professional really, I do commissions but I do not take up job offers, etc for my art. Art is still more-so a hobby to me as I am more leaning to the writing industry but art is what you make it: it can be stressful or it can be a breeze. Everyone has unique art that the world hasn't seen yet so it's wonderful seeing new artists eagerly come into the scene. I just really don't want to see them give an arm or a leg to afford these softwares.
@kdsketch
@kdsketch 5 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with you there! I'm so glad there's more free options available now that animation can be so much more accessible to everyone rather than just the people who can afford to buy/rent the software - even with a free trial they're never usually long enough to see whether they're right for you or not. It's true that the software doesn't make you an amazing animator, it's all about practice, but I've applied for jobs and been rejected because I didn't have experience in the right software, a lot of it I didn't even know existed before I started looking at 'requirements' on the applications! Obviously if you're just animating for yourself and not trying to get into a studio you can use whatever you like, even if it's not 'professional' standard :)

It's also on mac and windows but I haven't tried those versions and I think the developer focuses more on the app. I'm planning on making some basic animation tutorials and tasks for the channel in the next couple of months too - and you should definitely check out The Animators Survival Kit by Richard Williams, it's a great base to learn from!

Here's a few more that I'd like to bring up, though they're more 3D animation. However, since you brought up Blender, I'd thought I'd mention them. Muvizu - by far the easiest to learn of the three I'm going to mention and (unfortunately) the only one of the three that I've actually created something in. Originally produced by a UK based company (I believe). A couple of years ago, they were bought out by a Chinese company which had some issues in the beginning. However, it seems like they're finally back on track and will hopefully have additional assets for purchase in the near future. The base program is free, and the pro version isn't that expensive (under $100US) If I remember correctly, you should be able to import assets from Sketchup, though I think you need a conversion app for that. Daz 3D - one of those "razor and blades" programs that is similar to Blender, but not as steep a learning curve. The base program is free and if you're pretty self sufficient plus a bit handy in 3D building, you should be able to create something really cheaply. They do have assets you can purchase from other users and it looks like it "plays nice" with Poser assets. Speaking of.... Poser - more of a 3D building program, you can animate in it, as well. It's also from the same company that makes Moho that you mentioned in the video. Not really that expensive and learning curve is probably a bit more than Daz 3D.

Endost If you think thousands of sheets of paper over years of animation is cheap idk what to tell you
@avidadolares
@avidadolares 5 жыл бұрын
Paper is NOT cheaper at all... if you want to work in the industry or make money doing it. Also, paper isnt software. It clearly stated "2D Animation SOFTWARE"....not 2D Animation Resources. Coming from a 2D animation background: punched paper, pencils, drawing setup (animation table + disk /pegbar), pencil test equipment (camera and compositing software) is NOT cheaper whatsoever especially in time commitment, if you plan to animate at a higher level than hobbyist. Investing in all the equipment needed even for traditional 2D (see above), the time to do it all (actual drawing animation, testing the animation via pencil test, fixes reshooting. final clean up, etc) is way way more time intensive, expensive than the software route. Time is money and this is exactly why studios use digital software and equipment even when doing 2D.

@kdsketch 5 жыл бұрын
The Rabble Rabble Show I couldn’t really say, render times all depend on how many layers you have, what effects you use and how long your animation is as well as how good your computer is. So it could be anything from a few seconds to minutes/hours. The only time anything has taken me an hour to render was my short film (3 minutes long, over 100 layers). Also it takes longer if you have a larger canvas too!

The Rabble Rabble Show hmm 🤔 6 hours does sound like a long time just for 2 minutes. I’d say when you’re exporting look at the frame rate, the size of your canvas and what the quality is set to. The higher the frame rate, canvas size and quality the longer it will take. I usually leave my laptop to render my files and do something else if it’s going to take longer than a couple of minutes 😊
