2G-ACM - FAL Vs AK74 - Intro & Offhand @ 125 Yards

We pit the AKM versus the G3, and now in this 2G-ACM series we're pitting the AK-74 against the venerable FAL.
The simplicity of this stage is the devil in the details: 125 yards offhand, prone, and weak side offhand only with a 60 second par time.
How will these two old warhorses stack up?
308 vs 5.45?
Watch and find out!

Ian has the right shirt but I think he was having issues because he is lacking the turquoise camo and shorts required to operate a FAL as it was intended.

I know where you are coming from but we got to be fair. It would improve the quality of assessments, but this is an actual competition and while Karl runs it, he has to satisfy the competitors first. They are paying good money to be there unlike most of us who are watching this for free (hats off to Patreon supporters!). Adding two extra runs per stage when you already are waiting an hour or more between stages would be rather unkind, especially in the Arizona heat.

What would be a great way for us to get to see both of them using the guns is for Ian and Karl to arrange an obstacle course for themselves, a private testing site (edited cuz bleeping auto-correct) where they could really show off the guns, running against the clock and so on on their own terms. Maybe with time, they can afford to set one up. Fingers crossed.

On the first shoot with the FAL the position and hold wasnt firm enough, a smaller caliber rifle will allow you those mistakes a larger 7.62 wont just an observation but thank you for an excellent upload you do some really good stuff thank you.

Power of 7.62x51 doesn't give you any advantage in sport match. If there was stage, where you would have to hit water bottle hidden behind 3" concrete wall ... well I think that 5.45 would have more trouble :) (not saying one is better than other, you just always have to pick right tool for the job)

I often run a very similar ten-hit & five-position match with my shooters. You start prone, got to kneeling go to standing, go to kneeling and go to prone. Each position requires two hits. Par time is seventy seconds. This used to be sixty seconds, but we upped it to seventy to allow for some of our older shooters having difficulty changing positions. There are no type restrictions on this match, so any rifle may be chosen to compete with. This is to allow for the myriad of rifles we see. Shooting takes place at 100 metres on a 50cm steel target. I've found that while I can complete this course within par with my Remington 700 (my best time on this rifle is 62 seconds), I'm much better with my M1 Carbine (average of 29 seconds, best time of 27 seconds). At these ranges, a open sight picture and an easy handling rifle are essential for making consistent _rapid_ hits, though most shooters who participate rarely every time out or exceed fifteen rounds fired. This course is also designed to be practical, specifically for hunters who need more training in rapid target acquisition. It's a fun course, but also one that requires patience. Ten full-power hits from a manual in under sixty seconds can be challenging, but it's very much possible.

Soviet advisors would use the AK-74 in Angola initially, but were readily replaced by AKM/AKMS rifles as the ballistics of 7.62x39 were better suited to the environment as well as for logistics reasons.

I can't even imagine why Ian was shooting prone with the magazine (barely) on the 2x4 support and sliding off every shot so he had to re-acquire his sights and sight picture. That was weird. Curious to see what the target size was at 125 yards: was that an official USA-sized "popper" aka "skinny sammy"? Not a simple target standing unsupported at 125. If it was a C-zone IPSC or a full IPSC, then that was a day that both shooters will want to forget immediately. Interesting that the comparison is 7.62x51mm (full 'battle rifle' cartridge) versus "carbine" cartridge 5.45x39mm. Not an apples-to-apples comparison. I like the idea of both shooters using both rifles.

More and more arguments to be made for intermediate cartridges with 1-4x power scopes in the majority of situations. That being said, having a 1-4x on an FAL wouldn't be the worst rifle to be behind in a firefight.

can someone please tell me why FALs have so expensive?
@brunopezzey9516
@brunopezzey9516 Жыл бұрын
The FAL was always expensive because of the forged receiver and the large number of machining operations to complete the rifle. Also, not a lot of the rifles were imported before the ban (1986 iirc), so supply is low. Finally, the kits that were imported in the 70s and 80s and 90s were sold / priced at approximately $200 / kit (including CHF .30 cal barrel) and $199 for Imbel / FN receiver. They've been sold and resold until StG kits are worth $1000 and receivers are almost the same price ($800 - $900) - because there aren't new supplies coming in.

InRangeTV Dude just look at pics of soldiers with theirs, takes two seconds. I'm telling you those hand guards are not AK74 hand guards their AKM. AKM has different palm swells and much bigger vents, which I don't even see palm swells on these hand guards. But their definitely not AK74. AK74 only had two types of wooden hand guards before switching to polymer, one had vents, and one which was late late 80s right before going to polymer had no vents which is correct and is my afghan clone. But I'm tellin you right now those hand guards aren't ak74.

@brandon3883
@brandon3883 7 жыл бұрын
Unless you are extremely confident of your weak-side skills I can't imagine how: every time you miss a shot, bumble around aiming, mentally counting down the seconds, puts that much more mental stress on you for the entire stage. So starting with in your least-likely-to-hit position is just going to get that stress pumped up early in the stage rather than at the end, and it's much better to time out and miss a couple off-handed shots than to never even get to your strong-side shots because you're a shaking wreck of nerves from the first 30 seconds of weak-side misses.
