In this stage we pit the AKM against the G3 not only within the tight confines of a truck, but with ambidextrous handling and ultimately the power of the cartridges against one another via the wicked MGM spinner target.
This is the last video of this 4 part series so we top it off with final thoughts and conclusions.
Part 1:
• 2G-ACM - G3 vs AKM - I...
Part 2:

The G3 is a great rifle. I used in the Danish Army along side my MG3 (basically a Mg42). About the G3.. The close range notch rear sight is not supposed to be a "V" but a square notch and that works very well. The G3 is not standard fitted with a bi-pod, only as a DMR and then the bolt carrier will also be different than a standard G3 bolt carrier. G3's are fitted with a fixed stock or a telescopic stock and both are good IMHO. So basically you were shooting a bastardized variant of the G3 :) Well, you would most likely not like the standard G3 anyway but it's a great rifle. Ultra reliable and easy to shoot. Also i never noticed anything strange with fitting the mag in the mag well..

I carried one in the norwegian army, and loved the thing. Admittedly, the first I was handed was worn and went full auto on me (talk about a sphinxter clenching moment..Both for me and the Sgt.) but that was the only issue I ever had. Got my marksman medal on it :-P

The G3 needs a holo sight to bring it up to modern CQC capability. I always set my irons first and you can bet I can use them, but they cannot match a good holo for CQC. Extra claw mounts with night vision, thermal and day scopes make the G3 a very versatile system, indeed

the G3 has a poorly designed version of rock and lock. the V/Square and aperture sights are all not great compared to the alternatives. it's a decent rifle but it's no as nice to shoot actively as a fal in my experience, nice on a range though and the recoil isn't as pleasant as the fal.

Ian's many issues and comments on/about the G3 pretty much nullified the entire point of this series...which didn't even seem to be mentioned in this video, due to the focus on the G3. This REALLY needs to be redone with Ian's FAL as the battle rifle (and perhaps even swap the AK to an AK-74 or AR-15 to move the cartridge sizes even farther apart). When you've got that many issues with a specific rifle that you're pretending represents an entire "combat ideology," you're not testing the ideologies at all - you're just testing your patience (against frustration) and personal firearms skills. And once you've moved to a test of skills even you guys admit that Karl has the advantage, pushing this "comparison" even farther apart from being a realistic test of the idea. I'm not saying this was a bad 2-gun series - the bridge stage was probably the neatest one I've seen yet - but it definitely failed at achieving the desired results.

by the way - the v-notch "express sight" on the HK is just that, an express sight. In the german arms manual, it says that if you need a precision shot at 100m and under, use the 200m peep sight. works.
@johanneswolff1215
@johanneswolff1215 7 жыл бұрын
In my time in the Bundeswehr I was told that the v notch is considered to be used from 50m downwards (Sturmabwehrschiessen). The first hole is marked "200" because the difference between 100 and 200 is only 5cm (2") so it can be used from 50m to 200m. After that distance the bullet begins to drop faster, so you need a hole for 300 and one for 400m.I liked the gun. It's an old dinosaur, but i remember having had only two failures to eject in one year of service. When you crawled over a meadow you could be sure to have most of the meadow in your gun afterwards, which was no problem, the gun never failed to work no matter what dirt was in.At first it feels fairly heavy, but after one week of training it starts to feel like an umbrella. From that point on you can be very fast when shooting with it. I remember two targets coming up at 280m. I managed it 3 times to shoot both before the guy next to me (with a MG 3) could get a shot on them. So with a little training the difference between th G3 and a lighter gun might not be so great.

The Plastik-ManPat (Training ammo) was lousy, the gun often ripped the cases and that caused jams. But with regular ammo that thing just worked. Never had a problem with regular "brass"

During my military service (in Germany 1995) we were told to use the 200m apperture sight all the time :) I like the G3 sight and was able to get good hits at 350meters. My problem with this test series is, that it is unfair to compare Rifles this way, because Karl is a noticeably better shooter. If you want to do such a test properly, let him shoot both rifles. But just to stress this point again, now you gat a G3 at hand... throw it in teh mud! :D

About the Diopter sights... Standard Portuguese Army sighting procedures for 100 metres firing, at firing range, as per taught in basic training, is to use the first peep-sight (the one set for 200M). And it works perfectly. No one, no one, uses the notch... Also, Ian should have used a fixed stock, and an A3 handguard. The fact that Ian doesn't like the G3 by heart, didn't help.

My basic training in Norway was with the Kongsberg AG3, which is a quite well made licensed G3. To qualify, we would have to change magazines in 3.5 seconds with the empty magazine not dropped but stuffed inside the field jacket. This would of course not work with brand new magazine pouches, they had to be worked a bit so be more supple. And of course we did not use the V-sight in daylight, the point blanc sight is the 200m combat sight.

Uh. The V-Notch is not used for precision shooting. The Notch is used for assault defense, night shooting, shooting in poor visibility, flying targets, and point shooting. It is not meant to be used for precision shooting - even at 100 meters I'd use the 200 meter hole if I was trying for precision with my XR41. Karl - you are right. The button is stupid, but with the paddle magazine release it gets better. Last round, rip back and lock the bolt, rip out the magazine, rock one in, H&K Karate chop, on it goes. The sling is stupid, yes, I only know of the 2-point sling, though, and that is what I would put on mine. All in all: Great match, great shooting guys! Keep up the good work!

the second setting of the g3 sight is two hundred meters yes, but it is also the same as 30 meters, so if Ian had actually known how the g3 works he would have had a better experience, the bipod, and folding stock are trash, the paddle mag release would have been better, so the moral of the story is get the propper gun :)

For exemple you have the Germans= Full auto HK G3 + belt fed MG3 // the British= Semi-auto L1A1 + mag fed BREN L4 // Belgium (and South american countries)= Full auto FAL + mag fed FALO LMG // the French Semi Auto MAS 49-56 + belt fed AA52 GPMG.

I think some of Ians points are valid but a lot of what he said might be midigated through propper training with the rifle and or just getting the right stuff. 1. Ian should ditch that weird stock and get a Propper stock. 2. Ian really need a Paddle release. and to Ians statement about inserting the mags. I can tell you that inserting the mags on a G3 is far smotther than an AK. I cant tell you how many times ive messed up the reload on an AK under pressure by just not sitting that lug correctly. Getting the magazine jammed in the rifle and having to smack the bottom of the magazine to get it to come out and then re-insert it again. 3. Aimpoint Red dot makes the horrible iron sights a non-issue. But i understand going with the iron sights in this video. 4. The way In which Ian pulls back on the charging handle seems akward. Maybe instead of going under the rifle, he should reach over the rifle to charge it?

Ian, well done, that spinner is TOO TINY and the G3 is a hard to wield in CQC (My battle rifle go to system, though) brother, look into pirate dannas for protecting your 'tail from snagging during "action". You can still wear the boonie hat and if it's lost, you still have the danna. I'm a biker with a short 'tail and wear a danna almost everywhere. In cold weather the shemaugh is best. I use the HK collapsible stock (general Battle Rifle config) or the Magpul stock (On my semi auto heavy barrrel SAW/DMR thingie) BTW I HATE the buckhorn sight, use the 200 aperture to set zero @ 300 yards for CQC with irons. The claw mount system is AWESOME !!!!! The G3 is not a CQC weapon, it's a BATTLE RIFLE heavy hitter. Most in a squad should have an AK74/M4 and my only real criticism is you are comparing old school accessories, that is history

Do you have to use a full size rifle or carbine, or would a PDW like a MP-5 or P-90 be fine? I shoot my PTR-91 with both hands, and I actually can reload better shooting lefty. The reason is that the button release sucks unless you have crazy long fingers. Shooting lefty, I can grab the mag with my fingers and push the button at the same time. Reaching over the action to pull the charging handle doesn't slow me down as much as dropping the mag does when I shoot right handed.

Most people completed the spinner this time, and 5.56 can do it at 50 yards with 4 hits. ~Karl

I wasn't sure this was karl without hearing him talk. Looks so unusual. How heavy are those spinners and what's the approximate diameter? Would you be able to complete this stage with a pdw or an smg in 9x19 or 5.7x28?

IIRC Karl does just that with his weird SMG thing in a previous video and kind of destroys the field. He ended up coming very high in the ranking that day (2nd or something) though it was actually a full auto gun. I suspect doing it at distance with a semi auto pistol caliber carbine would be tough.

fair enough I didn't pay any attention to the distance on this stage. I wonder how far it was. And I actually didn't get around yet to watch the other stages. Well I reckon as long as it's fun for the lads it doesn't matter what you shoot with.

dammit Ian you are supposed to hit the target not dig a crater in the sand-bank with the odd stray shot, someone will have to fill that thing up again before someone looses a leg down there (or before you decide to sacrifice the G3 to the desert gods in the unholy chasm).

It's just a belt with some velcro suspenders and a standard Ruskie 3 mag pouch. I honestly don't remember who made the suspenders. ~Karl

If the sling comes loose during use on a G3, you have not fastened it correctly.
