I told my friend when he asked why i was making it harder to switch to 4wd. "By making it more complicated now, im making it less complicated later" i carry a spare stock hub just in case though.

Thanks for the most informative discussion of the value of locking hubs I have found... I drive a 2nd gen 4runner and rarely use 4wd but after 200k I feel I have needlessly put 190000 miles of useless wear on my front drive train. Better late than never!

Haha right? Mine was worn in from the first owner also. I replaced a CV shaft and boots, decided that was a pain in the ass so I did the hub conversion haha.

Honestly I installed them on my hilux surf just to keep the wear and tear down. Glad I watched this cause I learned I need to engage them every once in a while to keep them lubed properly

I rebuilt my whole front end and did this conversation. Is a great idea to extend life of everything i just replaced 😂. Also it has some other positives, you now have a 2 lo and i personally keep my old flanges in the back because they are flat. just in case one hub does break i can still use 4wd.

In a pinch one can always disconnect the "broken axle" all together. I think a positive for mechanical hubs would be not having to get out of your rig in a blizzard while fording a "little creek" gone wrong. Just my thoughts.
@AgileWoodsman
@AgileWoodsman 3 жыл бұрын
Justin, yep I hear you! Jumping out to lock the hubs isn't always fun. But my thinking is that I'd rather jump out and lock my hubs at the trailhead than have to disconnect an axle in that same blizzard. I don't have to crawl around in the wet snow at least. What do you think?

Yup. I always had em! Other than on my Jeeps which....could have been done but was not a totally fun swap on the goofy stock setup in the 90's.

@@AgileWoodsman Kismet . This is the Buffalo Nickel belt commenter . I recently purchased a one owner 142k. Georgia State peach ( cherry ) 1992 4runner 6cyl. ) I will be doing a clutch master & slave replacement when our NNJ snow melts . I was a bit disappointed that the 4 wheel did not have the manual lock feature . Really happy to know it can be installed . 20/25% gain in gas mileage is substantial . I don't believe in coincidence . How I stumbled on to your site is karma .

@@AldiPennyLidl1887 20-21 new, stock, was pretty typical. For 22 it's probably newer spark plugs, relatively highway-biased tires, good O2 sensor, good driving... I dunno, I'm out of ideas. My 1990 5 spd on 31x10.50 BFG AT gets 17-18,. Maybe he'll drop some knowledge on us 👍

So in stock form, 2wd just disengages the transfer case but not the hubs? Am I understanding that right?

how do manual hubs work together with the 4runner ADD 4wd system? can everything else in the 4wd system remain stock?
@AgileWoodsman
@AgileWoodsman 3 жыл бұрын
It works very well! My ADD is still hooked up. Disadvantage is it's something that might break or give problems such as a vacuum leak. That's very rare though. Then advantage of keeping it in tact is that you can drive around with the hubs locked and leave em locked as long as you want. And operate the transfer case lever just as you would in stock form. Sonthe hubs simulate the factory flange. So on snowy days you don't have to get out and operate the hubs all the time.

How hard was the swap and what hubs did you use?
@AgileWoodsman
@AgileWoodsman 3 жыл бұрын
Factory Toyota IFS hubs. And the swap was not difficult at all. An hour or two of time and some basic tools. The snap rings are the only frustrating part. If you've worked on cars much at all you can do this for sure. I think yotatech.com has instructions.
