I heard a philosophy professor argue that humour was our greatest intellectual achievment as a species. The reason being, you have to use all of your mind to understand and 'get' a joke. The rational side of the brain understands how the world should work/function. The abstract side pictures the scenario being depicted in the joke. The brain then figures out how and why the abstract world of the joke differs from the real world and we react in an instictive way with an animal like sound, a laugh. From our most primal brain function to our highest, all are engaged when listening to and finding a joke funny. Amazing when you think about it.

@@davidlean1060 jokes are incomprehensibly personal to everyone, jokes are the only moral justification that life needs for the creation of wormholes. a task that was believed to be impossible without massive destruction was actually very simple, and it was done without technology. jokes have infinite potential energy.

Another note on the Dark Forest is that humanity was actually lucky that the people who heard Humanity's message were the San Ti, who actually wanted to invade. There are far worse and far more powerful aliens out there. As powerful as the San Ti are, they are small fish in a very VERY big ocean. For context, the Kardichev scale for civilization development, humanity is currently roughly a 0.6, the San Ti are a 1.8, the scale goes up to 4. Scale explanation: 0 - Civilization that can't harness energy. // 1 - A civilization that harnesses all the power from their planet // 2 - A civilization that can harness all power from their star // 3 - A civilization that can harness all power from their galaxy // 4 - A civilization that can harness all power from their universe

Love your videos, even when you don’t get stuff quite right the first time. I read the first book in anticipation of the series and was glad I did. It’s soooo good. I’m halfway through the second book now. It’s wild how they reveal a lot of things so early on in the show. For example in the book we don’t find out why “Saul” was chosen (because of the car crash assassination attempt) until about 8 years later, halfway into the second book!

Someone told me that they picture Santi as Lekgolo from Halo. They are small worms that unify into single entities. One worm doesn't have intelligence but one “entity” does. In the case of Santi I think those entities could just “touch” each other and their thoughts are conveyed. This still fits the biomorphological analysis in my previous comment and explains why there are rouge “individuals” in their society.
@lex-1108
@lex-1108 Ай бұрын
Although I think those Lekgolos are giving more horror than being intelligent, I would love to see that the Santi really looks like that. Imagining that an alien specie we thought to be highly civilized and advanced turns out to look primitive, blood-thirsty and horrifying.

@timthyfriend
@timthyfriend Ай бұрын
They are a hive mind tho well at least according to what I read, there is a set distance where they can communicate with each other, and the radius is fairly large, as far as I can remember. Like when in the book they mention, the human computer could only work if each person turned the flags hundred of thousands of time in very less time with precision, a transparent mind and Shan Ti's biological frame might've helped with that. Although, the conversation with the king sprouts some doubts, but the king was not angry or feeling anything at all, its their biological evolution that restricts them. Lying would be very harmful for their fragile civilisation, that hardly lasts 2 or 3 centuries, they gradually evolved to not even consider lying is my guess.

Wenjie’s joke is a strange thing when it comes to show vs book. Because in the book she just tells facts straight up, in the show she supposedly has to hide the info in a joke - but it does not seem to matter: the San-Ti still try to kill Saul because Wenjie talked to him A common explanation for the show is San-Ti sensed Saul got important info even if they did not understand it So the Einstein metaphor was kinda pointless and needlessly convuluted: Wenjie could’ve just told Saul shit straight up and San-Ti would act the same way
@jamesdewayne
@jamesdewayne Ай бұрын
really ? I wonder why they would make that change then, because if she did just straight up tell him, this would've made everything easier lol - so in the book, is the character representing Saul told "what" to do ? not necessarily "how" to do it ? cuz then that would mean her joke does have more meaning than just "tell jokes" right ?
@BenRangel
@BenRangel Ай бұрын
In the books Wenjie just plainly tells her hypothesis of cosmic sociology: which is basically that civilizations expand but resources don’t - so it’s a strong hint that all civilizations will be willing to go to war to get resources. This is not a very usable fact though and it takes the guy in the book a decade before he gets a practical idea based off Wenjie’s hypothesis
@BenRangel
@BenRangel Ай бұрын
In my opinion it us unclear what the show is trying to make Wenjie say Could be A) if you send a signal - a more powerful species will attack b) we can use jokes to hide info from san-ti c) both

No spoilers from me -- Have not read the books beyond what was streaming. The San Ti have several characteristics as revealed in the headset "Game" [ If one survives we all survive ] It seems to me that they are capable of reproducing asexually from a single living San Ti. Like cloning. Perhaps not a "hive" mind ---- if exactly the same genetically ---- then perhaps able to sorta know what the others are thinking. Perhaps they are so empathetic that they might not be able to read each-others mind but rather infer from very limited information what the others of their kind are trying to communicate. This would be similar to the "Speakers" in the Foundation books by Asimov. With periods of chaos and near total world destruction they my be relatively simple physically except for their organ of thought. The "dehydrate ---- rehydrate" theme suggests that by dehydrating they are like some other earthly organisms able to much better withstand , vacuum, heat, ionizing radiation and other life functions. Sort of like a suspended animation. That might explain how they can embark on a 400 year journey. They have to have some sort of AI that functions when they have dehydrated to survive the various periods of Chaos that besieges their world.

I have the trilogy of books but will wait until Netflix [HOPEFULLY} picks up seasons 2 and 3. SPACEFARING ALIENS ARE LIVING THINGS LOOKING FOR NATURAL RESOURCES, LIVING SPACE, A FOOD SUPPLY, AND A PLACE TO GROW A FOOD SUPPLY. WE ENLIGHTENED HUMANS EAT, PIGS, WHALES, GORILLAS AND CHIMPS! WHY EXPECT AND ADVANCED ALIEN GROUP TO PASS UP BILLIONS OF YUMMY MORSELS OR THEIR NATURAL RESOURCE RICH WORLD? I'm now 84 but problem of first contact has plagued me since I was a child. My good friends always insist that an advanced civilization will be enlightened and non violent. I point out how we humans have depersonalized and dehumanized fellow humans based on skin pigment, language, body type, physical infirmity, religion and for just about any way we could to justify taking their land, food, living space or JUST BECAUSE WE COULD. All live is in competition with similar life forms to maximize their access to natural resources. The enlightened European explorers 'discovered away North and South America. Germany needed "living space."
