3 Body Problem is an upcoming science fiction television series created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo based on the novel of the same name by Liu Cixin. The series is expected to premiere on Netflix on March 21, 2024. Ye Wenjie is an astrophysicist who saw her father brutally murdered during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Later, she was conscripted by the military because of her scientific background and sent to a secret radar base in a remote region of China. Her fateful decision in the 1960s echoes across space and time to a group of scientists in the present day, forcing them to face humanity's greatest threat.

My theory is that Will (his brain) is still on the right track to the San-Ti spaceships. Think it was just the sophons interfering with the data and the monitors to make them believe their plan failed. (PS-never read the books)

Id imagine, in order to keep book readers on their toes they'll come up with completely new plans for the Wallfacers. Unless Hines is added as a wallfacer we won't see the mental seal because it was him, a neuro scientist, that discovered the technique, so i dont see how the Wallfacers we have will be able to discover the mental seal

I have theories but I’d be cheating since I know about the books. (-: I’ll say that the books and the Netflix series are similar in terms of the concepts. I love how focus on the science part of science fictions - I mean “sophons!” What a great concept -versus normal sci-fin invasion of bigger ships, guns and shields. I’m convinced they’ll nail season 2 - you can see already how that is being set-up.

Cheng Xin = Cheng Jin. Her sympathy for Trisolarans while playing the game will influence the Trisolarans to take a gamble when she takes over as sword holder.

Im definitely in the camp of Auggie as both Swordholder#2 and Saul’s motivation to mature: It looks like she’s going to become a famous philanthropist/influencer since she’s travelling the world helping people out like MrBeast. Add her strong morality, feud with Wade, and physical attractiveness - someone humanity would vote for Someone on reddit theorized that Wade is a secret 4th wallfacer which is something Wade would absolutely do, since he doesnt have a role in Dark Forest already

I could see Wade essentially taking on a Wallfacer role without being named as such. But for him to do so basically just means he has to assume it without telling anyone. To be fair, all leaders need to act like wallfacers to some degree in terms of their planning.

I agree. However, Saul already has the motivation and maturity to be a wallfacer after learning about the San-Ti threat in Season 1 and Will's "death." Season 1 already covered Saul slacking off at times and being a womanizer.

I hope Auggie is dropped, she ran her course and story. But I absolutely think and agree she will go with the sword holder role otherwise there is nothing to give her The Rey Diaz plan would be my bet, it always seemed kind of meh as a storyline, in a book it works as it shows how crazy some people are but on the whole its not an important storyline, other than his memorable death.

I don't think even D&D and Woo know at this point. I personally want a happy ending. I think western audiences would prefer that. Will really resonated with me. In the book, Yun Tianming never managed to confess, but Will did here... that's a huge change already. I know this might be nuts, but here's a way to get this done and be it insanely poetic if not too engineered. Have Saul, Jin and Auggie be the last 3 on that ship and they meet Will at that star system, have Will and Jin get stuck in black domain and Auggie and Saul live out the remaining years on that planet. The rest plays out as normal in the pocket universe. It's not bitter sweet, it might be too fairy tale (but I think that's better). We already got a depressing ending with GoT season 8, I want a happy ending this time. @@roadtotarvalon

Auggie isn’t needed, her doubts are going to be more and more weighing the longer she maintains that attitude. Tho admittedly that is something contemporary writers don’t seem to understand. Many writers today do things in an episode without seeing how it affects the whole arc.

Great video again A. The debate around Auggie is interesting. I've read a lot of comments from people who really didn't like her character at all. If the writers look at these responses and rewrite season 2 based on them, is there a possibility they might reduce her role? I actually like her 'don't give a flying f**k' attitude and find her mysteriously entertaining...

People don't like Auggie because of unconscious bias due to her being a woman who stood up for herself. Notice how Saul's refusal to be a wall facer is not generating the same emotional; response for the same behavior.

Definitely going to be interesting to see how D&D use their versions of the characters for the story going forward. Based on what we’ve seen so far, I doubt we’ll get a “dedicated AA” character in the show. Most likely that role will be given to other characters, predominantly Jin. But I could be wrong. And I definitely agree, I think they’ve set Auggie up to be a swordholder. At the moment, I just can’t imagine Jin in that role. For me, Auggie’s character was the worst in the first season. Not sure if it was the writing, the acting, or a combination of the two…but the character just didn’t work for me. I just don’t find her believable in the role that’s written for her 🤷‍♂️ I was immediately hooked with the characters of Ye, Da Shi, Will, Raj, Jack and Wade. But Auggie never worked for me. Wasn’t completely sold on Jin or Saul in the early episodes, but by the end of the season, I loved them. As for Tatiana, she was an absolute scene stealer! So glad she’ll be back. And yes, definitely going to be a wallbreaker. If D&D really trim the story down, she might be the only wallbreaker we really follow. I’m most interested to see how they use the mental seal. One of the most captivating concepts in the books for me. So many possibilities there! Can’t wait 😝 And Amber…what was your favourite scene from the series, not including any scenes from the Judgement Day episode? (Too easy of a question otherwise 😂)

Wait whats with the trisolarians not being able to read minds? Cause I have a question/complaint. Why CANT they read minds? In the show given how the VR works and how closely they were able to monitor their brains, youd think reading minds would be easy for them. It's been a while since I read Dark Forest.

⁠@@roadtotarvalon ooooo…good choice! I gotta say, Alex Sharp was FANTASTIC in every scene! But that scene definitely hits hard! A little moment I thought was hilarious was when Saul and the Secretary General were talking after Saul was shot. Saul says, “I do NOT want this job!” And without missing a beat, she replies, “I don’t blame you, it’s a terrible job.” 😂 Some much needed levity in a dark series of events. Carol Pounder’s delivery of the line was absolutely perfect!

What will happen next? Tatiana will be a wallbreaker. Saul will first abuse his position of power and even let Da Shi fetch a wife for him ("it's all part of the plan"), but then his wife and daughter go into frozen sleep to force him to do his job. He casts a spell and goes to sleep as well. The other two wallfacers have crazy partially defeatist plans and are exposed by the wallbreakers, but Saul doesn't have a wallbreaker, instead his solution to the problem is ignored until... well... lets say "tears". And then his spell practically saves humanity, at least until Jin ruins the fun and the San Ti send us all to Australia. But her former boyfriend will save the day, well, "save the day". I mean like: "yo, no Australia, but lets go into the bunkers, mkay?" Will WILL be back and meet Jin, and there is a nuke involved.

i have a feeling those two wallfacers will be recast or killed, then replaced by new wallfacers (perhaps the book ones, perhaps not)-- the actors in the show are basically featured extras. years of tv watching tells me that a recast or replacement is incoming. possibly via Tatiana, as you mention, the show's (i'm gonna guess only) wallbreaker. of course, that all is dependent on * getting * a season 2 lol

I think Edgar will be a wallbreaker. He was given the goldfish by Jin in the last episode, and he was the only one who volunteered to go on the probe for the staircase project (to be closer to his lord).

There's no way I could see Auggie as the first sword holder. The second maybe (but I don't see her passing the vetting process), but definitely not the first sword holder who has a 96% probability of pushing the button.

I think AA and Cheng will keep switching places. spoilers But in the end I guess you are right. Auggie would be a much worse wallfacer than Netflix's Cheng. She hesitates a lot, Netflix's Cheng is much more practical. I see her sending the signal while Auggie most definetely wouldn't. However, I can't see Auggie having tea with Sophon. They never met. Cheng, on the other hand, has met her (or "it"), they have kind of a relationship already. So I would say that Cheng will be the one who deals with Sophon, while Auggie has the sword. And I would bet that Cheng and Will are going to end up together. Even hough Auggie and Will are much closer than AA and Yin in the books, I believe they won't separate Will and Cheng.

I think that Auggie for season 2 could fill in the general role of being a more serious partner with Saul without it being cheap. If it was classic TV, it would be that he starts out with the 'dream waifu' approach and realizes it's completely unfulfilling and empty and instead decides to 'earn' Auggie's attention back. A different approach has him try to just use his 'powers' to make her stay with him, and it goes extremely poorly. Ultimately she leaves him essentially on bad terms and he then goes on to find a new partner that may more readily match the book plot. A third approach probably has them just naturally continue to talk to each other and grow closer over time with Saul promising Auggie all sorts of opportunities for her to do what she wants using her fiber tech and so-on, and him essentially becoming a more mature person through his slow acceptance of the responsibilities of his position. But by season 3 I think Auggie and Jin will essentially collectively take on the roles you describe for them, acting as a team as things go totally off the rails between them and Wade and the San-Ti.

I loved your 3rd option! I think she will use his resources to help humanity. And when the Great Ravine comes, she will lose hope and hibernate. It's that idea in the book that individual actions can't really do much. Even with unlimited resources (through Saul) she would still fail, so she hibernates.

my theory is that, some of them will be frozen for 400 years, will going to be revived by alien and "leaking" some tech about FTL engine, so Jin can travel to her star. and if only there will be some scene where earth's fleet getting destroyed by only one san-ti ship, that will be epic.

Latest D&D and Woo interview on Vulture confirmed they were under contractual agreement to not adapt book material 100% accurately. Netflix only has rights to English adaptation so the show must be as a whole, have mostly English speaking dialogues. They were able to get away with showing a little bit of Cultural Revolution scene in Mandarin but they cannot do the show entirely in Mandarin. It's a literal contract that they cannot violate apparently. Article is on Vulture but it's locked behind paywall.

I think it is very much real because if you think about Tencent got the rights to Mandarin version and there's no way the Chinese media rights holder will allow a western company to outdo them with another Chinese accurate adaptation. Call it petty, that's how it is over there. I think Amazon was also bidding for the rights at one point and they gave up ultimately and Netflix outbid them in the end. Now if Netflix is paying hundreds of millions of dollars to do a show (intentionally asking D&D as well) ... it'll be unthinkable they cannot dictate what language they want to do this in... unless the condition was that they have to do English only (mostly), D&D and Woo said it was already kind of risky for them to do the Cultural Revolution in Mandarin (not the actual event itself but the language used throughout).@@roadtotarvalon

Nah, I don't think Auggie would be the sword holder. She got emotional at times but she never budge. Once she got her opinion, it won't change no matter what. If she become sword holder, I can imagine her character just went "beep" and bye bye.

Then again Cheng Xin gets emotional and tied down by her own morals that eventually led to a series of world ending decisions. There is a similarity there with Auggje.

@@Zero_RequiemCheng Xin is not tied down by her morals, she is naive and always consider herself above human beings. She care about the "whole picture" more than "human's benefit". What she's been thinking was "oh I can't hurt aliens" and hesitated. Auggie cares about human's lives, she care about present more than future. Her decision in that situation is clear.

Ok I’ve never read the books but I really really am a sci fi geek and I love this… but I think I’m starting to put things together. Because the other beings want to bring fear or as I understand also it’s weird that the little girl in the picture is the one in the game and in the picture so the daughter of the one that contacted the others . So what if she actually found a way to go into their world so she really didn’t kill her self but is getting rehydrated I know I sound confusing but my brain is on a binge . What if all the scientists that died all went to their world or something like that almost like they discovered a way …. And I feel like one of the others is already on earth what if the others are looking for that one what if it’s the one that answered the call back in beginning of contact and warned the lady not to contact their kind maybe it didn’t want to be found or is the one that’s the bad one, so wills brain will be in their position the others and they will use him to communicate or maybe will will be on the others side in the end. And they say they will not come until 400 hundred years maybe they want to see if the humans in this time will not care about the future humans and just live their lives not caring

I think the kamikaze space craft is the weakest plan. We have drones and self-driving cars already in 2024, there isn't a need for pilots in the future, especially those destined to kill themselves. The mental seal is definitely the most interesting plan.

The original Chinese plot was different(spoilers for ball lightning) and was much more interesting. They changed it because ball lightning hadn't been released in the West yet.

Original Chinese version used ball lightning, but since the book Ball Lightning was yet to release in the West when English edition of The Dark Forest came out, they changed it into the kamikaze space craft to avoid confusion and spoiler for Ball Lightning(which took place in the same universe and often seen as a loose prequel). Also at the start of Chapter 34 Bugs in the English edition of Three-Body Problem, they also removed the conversation between Wang Miao and Ding Yi related to ball lightning and the picture of Lin Yun, one of the lead character in Ball Lightning. If you saw the Tencent series they actually kept this memont in the show and replicated it exactly like in the book.
