For three dollars you could have orange chicken, chow mein, kung pao pork, and a side of rice. If you’re at a restaurant, that might only get you a side of rice.

Well seeing as how they are selling those at a rather sizable loss that can't happen. Those aren't there for profit but to get people in the door. People will often buy other things while they are there for dinner so Costco makes more money in the long run then what they lose on the chicken in the short run.

You should give one of them a shot one day. One of the simple ones, like scones. They usually turn out really good, and eventually you learn where to diverge/ how to make substitutions, which makes other recipes easier.

Don't think for a second that he actually tells the truth. He is very clearly lying to you!!!!! he said its $2.85 per serving but after watching it a second time, I added up all the price amounts THAT HE LISTED, cause he only listed the price for the first time he used oil, but he used it 4 more times without listing it. After adding everything up, it came out to $17.34 and if he wanted to achieve $2.85 per serving then that means you watched him prepare 6 servings, yet he's clearly showing you half of what he made put into one styrofoam container as if he wanted you to think he only made 2 servings.
@Pandaman64
@Pandaman64 Жыл бұрын
@@AdrenalineandEpiphany So.....first. I think you meant to respond to another comment. Second? It's so gross seeing people like you excited to list why the price is bogus. Figure out the substitutes, drive the price down, keep a regular pantry of staples and basics. It's not hard, I promise.
@AdrenalineandEpiphany
@AdrenalineandEpiphany Жыл бұрын
@@Pandaman64 no you don't understand my comment at all. He may help you learn recipes and substitutes, that information is valuable for purple to learn, but he is doing so while misleading you on proportion of serving size. If you divide everything he made by 6, which is how you achieve $2.85 per serving, then it's not a full serving size but instead a sampler snack. He shows you at the end a styrofoam container that he calls 1 serving but instead its 3, so his idea of a serving size is $8.55 yet he's claiming its $2.85.

Well, that's actually not too difficult. Naturally, stews & other bistro dishes can be made the day before & usually last 2 - 3 days in the fridge. Plus stews improve in flavor the longer they are stored. Very fibrous pieces of meat like beef shoulder etc, are not very expensive & are in my opinion (as a chef) more flavorful than a filet of beef. The real art of cooking is by achieving to get a very tough piece of meat fork tender. Every amateur online cook can create a perfectly pink filet with a thermometer these days. As my former culinary instructor would always say. The key is to know which step to take first. If you make for example a vegetarian falafel chickpea curry & you use fresh chickpeas, then you ought to leave them soaking in water over night. The next day you can make the falafel & the curry sauce in large batches & store it for 1 or 2 days until you are ready. I don't know what trouble you are having so I'm just trying to help the best I can, if you want my help of course. Just trying to be a good samaritan chef every now & then, reading some comments online. Bless you

Remember local mom and pop shops responding to the market pressure prices. these little places understand the balance of price and sales. You are not funding these local shops 2nd or 3rd homes the way you for executives at national chains. You are helping them to have a roof and putting their kids through school. If their prices are too high and they lose business , they will adjust not like the national chains.

I made a few adjustments to the Kung Pao Pork and it turned out really well. To keep things a bit healthier I cooked the pork in an airfryer albiet with a liberaI spraying of oil. I doubled the amount of sauce but only used 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and still needed to add some water. If I had gone with the amount of cornstarch Josh suggested I would have ended up with a jellified gloopy lump! Also added some msg and chilli flakes to taste. To take it up a notched I substituted honey sesame cashew for the peanuts (roast raw cashews in the oven at 190C until golden brown add honey and toasted sesame seeds and back in the oven for a few more minutes).

As much as I agree it's cheaper to make stuff at home, one thing people forget to remember when talking about why it's more expensive from takeouts is they have staff, building, utility and various other bills they need to cover. For me it takes a bit of practice to get to know the recipe before I can cook them in a reasonable time. I’ve started cooking Chinese food fairly recently and it takes me so long to make things, getting familiar with the recipe and preparing all the ingredients before the cook. It tastes amazing but it might take me a while to get the prep time down to something reasonable. To cook a few dishes it will take me a couple of hours, so sometimes the convenience of takeaway is still desirable. All you just cooked would probably take me 3 hours on first attempt.

I love watching Josh's vids and would love to try out some of his recipes. But I am a college student. I'd love if there was a series where he shows to cook nice meals with the utensils almost every kitchen has because most of his meals are cheap but can only be cooked with the right utensils. Unfortunately my stove isn't made for woks and I can't afford to buy and store all the utensils in my tiny apartment.
@andrelee7081
@andrelee7081 Жыл бұрын
You can find usable woks at places like Target (likely non-stick, so be aware of that) with flat bottoms that will work just fine on electric stovetops (I assume this is what you have). For cooking them you can just use a silicone spatula (better than plastic for handling the heat of the wok) from Dollar Tree or a large-ish pair of chopsticks. That is how I usually cook Chinese food after moving out, and it should be sufficient for dishes like beef and broccoli, fried rice, chow mein, etc.

easiest of the bunch are bigass milk cartons. pour the grease in, wait until room temp and then tape it shut. if the bits had any foil or plastic on it, thats common waste but if the container was biodegradable itself? bio pile just fine.

Bury it in your garden soil or compost if you can't filter it. It'll break down in 2 weeks, add hot water right after burying the oil, and it'll break down in a week. In the winter, its filter the oil and store it or use 3x hot water to oil when composting it. If you do welding or metal work, filter and use it for quenching the metal.

Made the kung pao from this with boneless skinless chicken thighs and it was one of my favorite dishes ever made. First Joshua Weissman recipe, will be making this again and trying more!!! Very much worth it and it makes like twice as much food for something like 50-75% of the price of Kung Pao Chicken from a local place.

Yeah, if you go Panda Express you can get a meal like this for $10-11 and it’s super filling and delicious, could even last you 2 meals. I think that’s the biggest problem with places like McDonald’s and Wendy’s. $10-11 would just get you a burger, fries, and drink which are just decent in terms of taste and you’ll be barely filled up

You literally just watched that in this specific video. he said its $2.85 per serving but after watching it a second time, I added up all the price amounts THAT HE LISTED, cause he only listed the price for the first time he used oil, but he used it 4 more times without listing it. After adding everything up, it came out to $17.34 and if he wanted to achieve $2.85 per serving then that means you watched him prepare 6 servings, yet he's clearly showing you half of what he made put into one styrofoam container as if he wanted you to think he only made 2 servings. So you're now realizing that he's quite a bit deceptive in his presentation.

@@AdrenalineandEpiphany Right? I just googled the price of the first ingredient listed for this one on his website, " 1lb boneless boston butt". It's listed near me, at the cheapest, $3.19/lb. The first ingredient alone exceeds the claimed cost of all 3 dishes!! Not to mention I would have to buy a 4lb butt.
@IceBlueLugia
@IceBlueLugia Жыл бұрын
@@kyra613 Um, because the whole point is that you make like 5 portions worth and each portion ends up being $3. Obviously you can’t buy each individual ingredient for that one portion size, don’t be stupid.

Guess those prices are found in large cities, because my town's Chinese restaurants still sell their stuff pretty cheap. $4.55 avg for a pint box of whatever (I prefer the pepper beef w/onion and/or chicken with cashews & veggies), and about $2.25/egg roll. End up spending about $12-$15 on food (don't always get the egg rolls) that gives me AT LEAST two full meals...

Tip for the chow mein noodles: take them from the boiling water and put them in cold water to stop them overcooking in the wok. Then when they're cool, dry them off with paper towel before frying them and it'll be closer to what you get at a restaurant

I wish I could send a photo of how my Orange Chicken came out. I made a lil cute photo collage too 😅. Anyway the only difference in my sauce was that I didn't have roasted red pepper seeds so I subbed with ground paprika and cayenne (less cayenne than paprika) also the only form of ginger I had was a ginger garlic paste so I did 4 large cloves of garden instead of six. Also I did fresh squeezed Cara Cara oranges as the orange juice bc they have a beautiful pink/red color. I'm very happy with how much I have learned and laughed along the way watching this channel! A big thankyou to Everyone involved with making this show happen! ❤
