This video is so great in showing how to apply White Crane Showing its Wing(白鶴亮翅 in Chinese or a hand moves up) in combination with its next style, brushing the knee and pushing forward (摟膝拗步 in Chinese), Snake Drops Down(蛇身下勢 in Chinese) in combination with its next style, Rooster Standing with a Leg(金雞獨立 in Chinese), and Brushing the Knee combining Pulling (捋, Lu in sound translation)! Until now, I do not know how to apply the three combos. Thanks!

@@Acrobatics3 OK I watched this video again. Looks like tai chi is mostly defensive. I can see where something like MMA would be more effective in a street fight. Good basic example of Tai Chi self defense. You can explain it all day and a lot of people will never get it. Years ago, I learned twice just how dominating (in a soft way) Tai Chi can be, which kinda blew me away. Then there’s all those fast and powerful whip like strikes, subtle strikes, low kicks etc. etc. I was skeptical about your videos at first Jake, but not anymore. Keep up the good work!

Glad to see you guys understand the philosophy of Tai Chi marital art that "making use of the momentum of your opponent to work against him. @eric thefathead, Another important philosophy of Tai Chi martial art is "to start later but hit earlier". I could weigh into the whole debate about street vs dojo vs traditional vs MMA vs reality vs style vs practitioner, etc, but I'm going to exercise some restraint (martial arts teaches you that! lol) and just share something I found interesting. I remember clearly over 30 years ago my father showing me a technique for escaping a bear-hug. He had been a nightclub bouncer (security) and in their training sessions they practised getting out of a bearhug with... A sudden drop! - much like in this video. I thought it was really cool to see a practical application here for one of the least practical-looking Tai Chi movements :) Maybe people get stirred-up because the Video's title seems a bit of an over-reach! But I assume titles like this and '24 Tai Chi Form - Amazing' etc, are meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek, while driving people to click on the video. And hey, we're all here watching it and leaving comments, aren't we? :D I am a Tai Chi practitioner with a varied martial arts background. So, after putting in over 10,000 hours of practice, if I can watch a 10 minute video, and pick up just ONE interesting and/or useful thing, that is time well spent! DDR and Jake are clearly skilled and dedicated martial artists. So, my attitude is simply "What might I learn?" (apart from how to get more KZfaq hits!)

This is the first comment I have ever left. My instructors pedigree stems from sansai kanazowa, enoida and in his later years of training, the tai chi master sifu Paul Compton. I have been looking at internal arts for the last 10 years now. Nut hit. Do not fanciful your art. You know better. I have watched you for 2 years now. Do not let your students think they can handle themselves when they can’t. Over complicating a technique will get you killed. Your understanding of chi seems like you know what you are talking about, and believe me, I am not discrediting you in any way. But,And I say but. I have had first hand experience of time shift and hollow arms, although I am years away from that understanding. Understanding of chi involves complete relaxation, if done correctly drop you scapula and let your hands hang. You should feel a slight pins and needles feel in your hands. If you can be that relaxed when you hit, you will project with your strike. Why have you never mentioned this. Do not let people get hurt because you are showing them inferior techniques.Be real.

I heard the the calligraphy character for martial means "stop the spear" or has even been translated to "stop violence". The idea behind that being that we're not looking to engage of fight or prolong a fight. Rather a martial artist's goal is looking to find the way to stop the fight. Cool right?

+Jay Dester 2693 Yes, the kanji for 武道 (ぶどう) BUDO or the Martial Arts/Martial Way can be translated into "the Path/Way of Stopping the Spear/Violence". The kanji 武 (ぶ・む) BU or MU which means Military/Martial is made up of two kanji 戈 (ほこ) HOKO which means Spear and 止まる (とまる) TOmaru which means to stop. 道 (どう) DO means the Path/Way. So, 武道 (ぶどう) BUDO can mean the Way/Path of stopping the spear/violence.

I have no problem with people training martial arts like wing chun and tai chi if it keeps you fit and you enjoy it then go right ahead. But people need to stop advertising it as something that will win against the more effective martial arts like Muay Thai, wrestling, bjj, boxing or even judo. If it was as effective as it's made out to be in videos like this, you'd see at least a substantial amount of people in professional mma using the techniques from it. I have nothing against you as the person who makes these videos and have complete respect for the effort you put in to your craft but the whole advertisement of this as something which will work leads to people thinking they can fight and in turn, getting hurt.

People say the video is plain garbage and i mist say some of this is fairly hard but, I have seen tai chi used correctly and SOME of his moves were used, and they are relaxing as well as a fairly great intro to tai chi in some of his videos. But actually getting real lessons or potentially better videos will help.

I don't even drink Kombucha. It is fermented so it has a small amount of alcohol in it. When I tried it, I knew something was wrong with it.

I have done about 6 years in martial arts now, so I am by no means a master. But I do have something to say here. I don't think that Tai Chi is going to teach you how to fight, but none the less, there is no point in all these trolls in the comments. I have been in some real fights, and I can say that Concepts like this can transfer over. I do think the title is misleading and that these particular Concepts won't win you a fight, but before you bash this stuff, give it a try. That whatever Dojo you might train it, try a bit of the concepts. If they don't work for you, then they don't work for you. But for some people, this might be really natural type of concept to work into whatever martial art they study.
