Your attitude of helping those who want it by sharing your knowledge is the highest form of honorable. I made a good living and had a great life due to someone like you doing just exactly what you are doing. I made it a point to pass on what I had learned in the same manner.

6010/6011 was hard to weld with but once you get a little bit of weld time you’ll get to know what you need to work with.. keep up the good work teaching.. that’s the best way is to practice and learn different techniques

I’m 17 but I think the hardest part for welding pip is just moving your body in the right position and the angle

A tip that you should do every time is get comfortable, plant both feet, get your hip planted, also an elbow and use both hands on the stinger, if your right handed grip the stinger in your right hand and use your left to cradle your right. Stroke your intended path so you wont get in a bind half way through. Sometimes you'll want to adjust your position a bit to continue your weld, just move your ark forward while you get the new position then come back and continue where you left off, any trace you'll be running over with the weld.

Practice passes with no power, just mimic the action and movement you want and practice run until your position is comfortable and can complete the pass

I got an apprenticeship as a pipe fitter at an hvac company I’m currently in our fab shop and for the last month I’ve been setting up one of the welders grabbing some scrap pipe and just practicing downhill 6010 for roofs then Filling them in with 7018 uphill. I’ve been doing my practice trying to see what I can notice in my own stuff as I practice and I’ve noticed stuff like undercut or key holing then I’ll ask the journeyman about it and he’ll give me a demonstration or watch me do a bead then gives me a few tips and has me try again and in one month I made more progress than I did four years ago when I was taking a few classes in high school and early community college

Also when you weld bend your rod's. If you have your rod straight in the stinger your out of position for your body. Clamp it into your stinger and bent the rod end 45 degree this will get you your stinger to be closer to the pipe allowing you for more support and there for a better weld.

I was taught to go uphill in my welding program by my instructor whiners cwi ,couldn't weld down hill if I tried, after not welding for a while I couldn't weld up hill and down hill has been my go to for welding. Good info reminds of my 2nd school for welding for pipe. 6G certified but never did get into pipe welding. Spend a good dime to learn but I guess if I tried,I might be able to get a 6G done lol...

Ikr. It almost makes me cringe every time I see a down hill. Especially with low hy. It just seems as if the strength will be missing. But I guess because of pipe it will need to be more flexible. Big no no on the stuff I have to weld. Hardly any 6010 anyway. 7018 up to 12018. I need it to stay put. No flex

@@carloshart2424 yeah uphill is the key,I like overhead better haha...maybe because I tried harder and was more into it. The only coupon I ever broke was vertical ,redid it the next day and passed.1" inch coupon.

That's a different technique as here in Australia on 6-8 inch pipe we use 4 tacks(prevent gap change from one side to the other), weld over head to vertically up, with a key hole and a flick motion. This is so foreign as how do you know if the root run is going well if you can't see it when welding.

Still glad my mentor taught rig style welding does even I don’t do pipe often but it comes in handy when ever I have to weld a gas line of water line . Saludos from the Bay Area 510. Ps I always use red Lincoln 6010 my personal choice but shit I can’t find it hard to fine the red 6010.

I would like to learn how to run that 6010 root but dragging it instead of stitching ,just how your friend did at the end of the video ,I can get it started but my arc dies after an inch or so.i had the same problem with my root around 6-9 o’clock my root starts to get heavy ,your video help me find out my problems another thing I noticed in your video was your friend was welding down hill ,the school I go to teaches us to weld up hill because down hill causes porosity ? but I also heard pipelines is all downhill !! ????
