Sometimes the best way to overcome a fear is to just do the thing! And that is exactly what I’m doing this week. There is a bit of a back story here, which I tell in the video, but, as much as I love the woods and hiking, I’m terrified to be out there alone. I said it… I’m afraid to be in the woods alone! But, all that changes this week when I push myself out of my comfort zone and make the decision to do a 3 day backpacking trip into the Idaho backcountry ALONE! I had my husband, Clay, drop me off at a destination point and he was to pick me back up in 3 days at the ending point. In this first video, I’m heading out on the first leg of a 30 mile trip through the Idaho mountains in search of myself. Who am I and do I have it in me to finish this trip? My stopping point for the first night was a beautiful lake, I just had to find it. This trip had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows for me and I documented it all.

Awesome video Liz. I cant help but chuckle throughout this video because your feelings and thoughts are exactly what I would be feeling in the same situation. I live in Idaho as well and love hiking and backpacking however I also have irrational fears of encountering grizzlies and humans in the back country. This was pretty freaking brave, not only going on the solo trip but putting it on the Internet for people to see. Its extremely relatable for women like me and I 100% applaud you for facing this fear.

This really hit home for me. I’m 29 and I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the woods, but only over the last few years have I been getting used to being alone in the dark in the woods. And I am on the east coast where predators aren’t really even on the mind. I applaud you for your bravery in not only your trip, but posting it for the world to see. Also, as a husband I can understand some of the heart strings that this trip probably pulled on for Clay. Can’t wait to watch the next 2 videos of this trip. Keep up the great work! You are both great role models to so many people.

God bless you Liz. I'm from Australia & go camping on a regular basis. Kudos to you for persevering. It's not easy when you feel out of your depth but you didn't give up! Here in Aus I have zero fears regarding any of our wildlife. If I was in the USA, bears would be of great concern to me also (possibly to the point of not going camping or hiking at all!) Well done for overcoming your fears

I'm kind of surprised. I would not have guessed that your experience in the wilderness 'alone' would have been new to you. But, I'm really glad to know this side of you. I applaud your courage, and I believe your videos on the subject will reach an important audience niche. We can't all be "Clay Alone in the Wilderness" and your example is an inspiration. The video quality is terrific...gorgeous scenery. Keep it up. I'll be looking forward to seeing more.

Congratulations! So rewarding to face our fears, it strengths our resolve. One super special companion you had with you, Cedar, he'll know long before you if danger lurks about - be it creature or human. You might enjoy watching Durston, the Great Divide. Dan's wife did a solo trip and face many of the same fears...its a great video, she's vulnerable, open and honest about what she's experiencing just like you. Hope you watch it and perhaps reach out to her. Great job!! Continue to stretch and strengthen yourself ❤😊

Wow Liz! Very impressed by this adventure. Few people can actually do this comfortably. I’m assuming this trip took place some time ago? It doesn’t look like winter in Idaho. I would assume you are all south for the winter now. Looking forward to part two. Congratulations on building the courage to set out on this trip

You are so awesome for doing this I promise you will come out with a great experience. My wife would be losing her shit out there haha. At least you got the yellow lab to keep you company and your last line of defense from being hypothermic wet! Makes me want another on they just cannot help themselves when there’s water.

Well done! Nobody wants to purposely do something they fear. I know I sure don't. It reminds me of fear and frustration I have dealing with some of the technology stuff for my job. I resist it! Way to meeting it head-on and be proud of dealing with it.

This was that trip. I had posted a few pics but that was it. It was a beautiful place but when you are a child and told things will get you in the woods, then eventually it sticks. But I started to break free from that thinking on this trip.
