Last year I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding caused by the pandemic, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

Chris! Amazing watch!! Love the music also. I used to listen to marian mcpartlands piano jazz every Sunday night on npr. I still do when I’m packing before getting on a plane. Planes give me anxiety. Anyway… quick question.. I’m sure dozens of your hiking buddies have asked you this but ever tried a hammock system? Just listening to you describe the puddle of water under your tent. I really appreciate how you travel so quietly, peacefully and responsibly through that fragile ecosystem. I watch a lot of bushtubers and gotta have a fire every night. The chopping wood, cutting the wood, splitting the wood. Making fuzz sticks, starting the fire with a ferro rod. Scraping the birch bark with your knife and throwing a spark on that to get it going. I really like how travel very low impact. No fire. Turn in early hit up a book or podcast and lights out. I still have night terrors if I’m out there by myself. I guess as long as you bearbag your food way away and eat dinner way away from where you sleep then you should be good. Of course the one thing I would change is i would bring my solo stove with trangia so i could have a smokeless little fire to boil my water with. A trangia if it was pouring during dinner prep. Thank you thank you Chris for putting good stuff out there!!! Looking forward to seeing a winter video👍🏼.

Ya I am not about the bushcraft action at all. I tried a hammock system for a few nights. I enjoyed it but just prefer the ground experience better. I wasnt worried about the water. I know the waterproofness of the dyneema well from the AT and had full trust it would keep the temporary lake out of the inside haha

Was lucky enough to hike Carrigan on a bluebird cloudless day a couple of years ago...the view from the tower on top is amazing, one of my favorites in the whites to date (although the slog up the signal ridge trail to the summit is grueling). Hoping you can experience that some time soon.

Mt. Nancy was nice with a view. Yeah, carry your pack because you never know what could happen. In NH, it gets dark way too fast. That's one reason why I moved to MI because we're on the East side of the Eastern time zone so we get at least an hour more light than you. Nice video. John from MI

Hi Chris. Just wondering if a winter trip was in the cards this year? I’m curious how you travel through the woods in winter. I’m assuming its the way i like to. Snowshoe in until your tired, set up your 3.5 season tent, chill for a bit, make dinner, eat and go for a quick snowshoe hike before bed to get the blood flowing, pee and get your ass in the -20 bag👍🏼 Take care Chris. Love this kind of videos. Just moving stills, no crazed out camera action or cheesy cheap dramatization. Well done. Is there a reason you switched cameras? I know you don't recommend gear but maybe there is something on the Sony that really wasn't so clever?

The sony setup is great. I love messing with camera gear. I shot with the GH5 for like 2 years and I feel like I learned a lot since I got rid of my first GH5. This GH5 I picked up locally with the Olympus lens and a bunch of accessories for $1100. Absolutely crazy camera setup for the price. You cant even buy the Sony body I have been using for that price. Wanted to see if the quality difference was really noticeable and to me it just really isn't. I also knew the GH5 could handle the expected weather on this trip. Was very pleased with the overall video quality especially given the fog and rain. The GH5 is also a million times better if hand holding things stabilization wise

@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelRichards983 Ya the Panasonic AF is really a joke. I had tested out the g9 and it actually worked pretty well in a sit down talking type of setting recording in 1080 or 4k 60. But it is unreliable to use AF in pretty much any other situation. But I really loved everything else about the GH5 its such a great camera and people seem to be selling them quite cheap lately with all the newer fancy full frame offerings out there

Your videos are amazing. They're very different from other hiker KZfaq channels, I've stopped watching most of them but really enjoy all of your hike videos. They're relaxing but also have excellent production value which I can fully appreciate now that I've gotten my Chromecast with Google TV to behave with 4k video again. It looks stunning, especially with the fall leaves and water!

Beautiful autumn color! I noticed you are using a rain cover for your HMG pack, isnt the DCF fully waterproof?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
the material is technically waterproof but the packs are considered "highly water resistant". I had the pack cover on the second it started to rain and I still had a little bit of water in the pack. The pack cover is also an additional layer of protection for the stuff in the outside pocket of my pack as well as the camera gear inside. I believe a little bit of water seeps in from the sewing at the hipbelt area
@donaldpang
@donaldpang 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisGoesOutdoors thanks for your advice. I have a HMG Southwest but have never put it to the test in heavy downpour. Indeed a cover will extra protection. Cheers

@@donaldpang a pack liner could work as well. Thin plastic trash bag for anything you dont want wet. I think it definitely is coming through the seams. Someone on the review I made commented they thought it was from me using the bag as a roll top. I just dont see it personally 🤷🏼‍♂️

@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Altaplex was great. There was condensation but nothing too crazy especially given the conditions. Light condensation pretty much all over my bag, but I think thats more just because I sleep super hot, I dont think it was leaking from the tent itself. I've come to see it pretty much anytime I am sleeping around 40 degrees or lower.
