Today we are showing 3 different excerpts, from 3 different courses, with 3 different producers and they will talk you through their master bus processing! These excerpts tell you about essential mastering tips that can help you with any mix.
Mark Needham is the first mixer to walk us through his master bus process. With over 35 years of experience, Mark is one of the most in-demand mixers in today’s music industry: As a 11x Grammy nominee, he has a track record of mixing multi-platinum records for artists such as P!nk, Elton John, Dolly Parton, Shakira and Train. Aside from his remarkable mixing career, Mark also helped to develop bands like Neon Trees, The Killers and Imagine Dragons early in their careers.
Ariel Chobaz is the second mixer to show us his master bus processor. He is also a GRAMMY nominated, L.A. based mixing engineer who pumps out platinum selling and billboard topping records day in and day out. If you check out his resume, you’ll feel like reading the ‘Who is Who’ of HipHop and R&B. From artists like Nicki Minaj, Drake, Eminem and Rihanna, to NAS, Snoop Dogg, Boyz II Men, Pharrell, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Blige, Kanye and Christina Aguilera, he’s worked with them all!
Warren Huart is of course our third mixer to take us through his master bus process, but Warren shows us how we can do it using only Waves plugins! This Los Angeles-based British music producer has played a fundamental part in the creation of platinum winning and billboard-soaring albums; as well as the development of many of today's successful artists' careers. With over 20 years of experience in the ever expanding music industry (record production, engineering, mixing and songwriting), as well as his extensive knowledge of musical equipment used yesterday and today, Warren manages to create the most diverse sound around.

Always use a mastering engineer. It's not the sofware, hardware or whatever. Just for the experience and the second pair of ears. Find someone you trust and can afford. When it comes to mastering you have to have a very reliable monitoring and knowledge how your mixes translate. I appreciate each and every tip or technique, but in this case, I'd not go the cheap route. Just my 2c.

Thanks so much Eric!! This information is a Godsend. I’m taking a little of each engineer methods but I really like what Warren is doing keeping it stupid simple with great results. I know everyone have their own chains in what they do in the mastering stage. It’s been trial and error since I first started mastering my own music. I’m kind of still a rookie (9 years) into home studio recording. I’ve learned more in a few months checking out your videos. Produce like a pro is some of the content out there if not the best. Keep up the good work appreciate all you do for the recording community.

Interesting to see how radically different the approaches are. I know some very successful pro mixers in town,, and some adhere to little or no mix buss processing, and yet someone like Needham piles on the plugs!. As you've often said, there are no rules really, whatever sounds good is the right way :-)

More Eric! And super relevant, I always try to do a ‘fake master’ to make it at least semi competitive when people are listening back then inevitably comparing on Spotify, and I can clearly be doing it a lot better! Great to see you in front of the camera rather than being hailed with an extended EEEERRRRIC! How about showing us your editing chops?

Hey Eric great to see you doing a show, very well done. Great video When one guy was talking about quality control, I try that on the mix bus. But with a twist. On the mix bus inserts I use to find anything thats popping out in the mix that needs either attention or a little smidgen of something on the track itself. So if I use a comp on the mix bus lightly and the lower end sounds better, then I bypass it and go to the mix and improve the lower end as much as I can. When I do my own fake mastering, then I have a goto chain in a home-made template. Pultec EQP1, shadowhills comp, Manley Massive Passive, Puigchild comp, Studer A-800, Ozone Vintage Limiter ( no limiting only flavour ) Fabfilter L2. I have a question, would / could a mastering engineer use a plugin Limiter or an analog Limiter for the brickwall, Can a plugin brickwall limiter do as good a job as it's analog equivalent?

Hi Warren, I'm surprised you set the SSL compressor's attack on 1ms. Doesn't it destroy the Kick transient ? I always set it to 30ms on the Master. What do you think about it ? Thanks Eric
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 2 жыл бұрын
Obviously it all depends on the track. However, Mastering engineers pointed out to me that the excessive fish tailing they get in mixes is often from attack times on the master bus set wrong. If you’ve mixed your drums to have parallel energy etc you’ll find you don’t need to have spiky transients to get the drums to sound audible and they will be more powerful in the mix

EQ before or after depends on many factors! Many people will do both, again the music can make a huge difference on what I'm going to do. But typically something like a Pultec with a 60hz and 10-12k lift is often very present on a lot of mixes
