I am 47 years of age and I have long since thought I would be too old to learn the art of mastering, but I was surprised to actually notice the difference between the tiniest adjustments you made. Not when you were riding the EQ, but when you explained why you did something and A/B’d the different versions. Thanks for the in-depth explanation, with this course I believe I will get the insights and the training necessary to get my own music where I want it to be, connectivity-wise. Thank you again!!! =)

I love how intuitive the movements on the 'instrument' are! It reminds me of a violin or piano player. I loved seeing the left and right hand do their thing almost on their own. Wow dude!! Great tutorial!! I am about to attempt to master a song at home that I just finished mixing. Watching this really put a lot into perspective for me. Firstly it made me realize how totally unprepared I am for mastering. But because of that realization, I think it will take some pressure off. possibly keep me from dragging my feet so I can wrap it up faster and get on with my next project. I plan on using the one of the Brainworx mastering desk plugins, moist likely mastering desk pro or true peak. My question is.. Of all the mastering approaches and techniques you explained so well in this video, how much or how little of that might carry over to using a mastering desk plugin? For example, would you do the same cut/boost at 31hz/45hz if you were mastering ITB with plugins? Or are a lot of those little moves you mention strictly tailored to the exact gear you are working with. I imagine you need to be "on top of" much more detail with an analog setup like you have in this video, Whereas a plugin, aside from not being real analog gear, will shape the audio in a pre determined way leaving the mastering engineer with less control and fewer tools. Would you suggest to a noob just learning how to master to stick with a single master desk plugin or might it be better reach for other tools (plugins) as well to compliment the mastering desk plugin. I realize it will depend on the source material and many other factors. And me trying to come anywhere near accomplishing what you do in this video with a plugin is a joke. I guess a better way to ask that question is,, Are any of the mastering desk plugins good enough to do the entire job of mastering for a beginner like me? Or should a beginner look at a mastering desk plugin as just 1 tool of many that will help me learn the skill of mastering? I might be over thinking it all. When they say do not mix and master your own songs it really is no jokje. It might not be possible for me to do both without a lobotomy in between. lol I appreciate you making this video. Its really refreshing to find a tutorial like this where they arent just using some techno or dance music throughout but a real musical performance played on real instruments by actual musicians with nuances and groove. I mean no disrespect to electronic music, its just not my thing, I'm not a dancer and when learning my craft the last thing i need is a techno song playing on repeat. Especially from a mixing standpoint or imagining the standpoint of a mastering engineer I struggle to relate to a lot of electronic music and sometimes wonder if a song made up of pre recorded samples really needs to be mixed as thoroughly after tracking. i digress... thanks for making this vid! i look forward to many more Cheers

great Video tutorial and insight to Pro Mastering process 👌 one thing i'm missing here, its shows the texture and musical decisions for the specific music , but i didn't see the Technical or standards for the final level decisions. and how to achieve a industry standard music release loudness without getting the music squashed and distorted, i know its a broad topic and every platform and music genre has its own rules/standards, but it's one of the most important aspects and hard to achieve goals in mastering. clean loud master ! probably this is not what the video was about, but missing this important aspect of mastering ,and i wonder how the pro Mastering guys approach and handle this

Hi Warren, I'm enjoying learning about 'behind the scenes at the mastering lab'. I'm in the middle of making my second album. I'm thinking of taking the upcoming mastering class but I have two questions for you: 1) How much audio production experience do I need to have in order to comfortably absorb the lessons 2) I see that this is geared towards Pro Tools but I have the latest version of Logic... would Logic be compatible with the course?
@Producelikeapro

Great questions! Firstly any DAW will work, the plug ins will work with any major DAW. As for level, frankly all you need is the willingness to learn.

This was certainly a helpful demonstration to understand the idea behind the Lurssen Signal Chain and I appreciate that. I'll EQ more into a chain from now on (when I have to master). I'm not sure wether it's envy, disbelief or simply curiosity, but there is a part of me that wants to put you to the (blind)test with an A/B -comparison wether you can actually hear a 0,07 dB boost. Most of the time I'm mixing I'm thinking in 0,5 dB steps. I know I have far from perfect ears, but 0,07 dB is wild to me. I'm not even sure I'd be consistent on a whole bypass of the fabfilter-EQ. I THINK I'm hearing the difference, but am I reallly?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Жыл бұрын
The boost and cut relationship exaggerates the move, so a cut preceded by a boost is more apparent
@akagerhard
@akagerhard Жыл бұрын
@@Producelikeapro of course. If you make a step forward and I make a step backwards we're 2 steps apart, because we moved in the opposite direction. Still those are very, very, very minor steps, aren't they? Have you ever adjusted a 0,1 dB boost to a 0,07 dB boost, Warren? I occasionally do the 0,1 dB changes but I try not to, because I think at that point I'm mostly fooling myself. I have heard differences while the EQ was bypassed once too often, I guess..

@@akagerhard obviously I can’t speak to how you hear things. For Reuben the boost and cut made enough of a difference to him, I did hear a change also, however if you thought it needed to be a bigger change to you then that’s understandable. He’s doing what he thinks is necessary, sometimes a little sometimes a lot. Isn’t that the purpose of mastering?

I wish I could adjust all of the parameters for each of the processors. I do understand why that wouldnt be possible, if for example this plugin is based on convolution technology- then perhaps an entire signal chain avoids creating redundant signal flow. Still, would be nice to select modules- and affect their parameters without having to blindly flip through presets
