It's a little cliche, but my dad is the nicest man I know. Every time I asked him for something like a new game system or whatever, I'd never actually get a no. And while it came late, my dad tried his hardest to get whatever I wanted. He worked (works) long hours doing a lot of physical labor, and I can only hope to be able to repay him one day.
On the other hand, my mom never bought me anything. However, food was the only exception. She believed if you were gonna spend money on anything, you should spend it on nutrition and experiences. And indeed I have fond memories of stuffing my face with my mother and sister on the way home from cram school.
I saw both of my parents inside March comes in like a lion, and it does a great job at its depiction of poverty, as well as how the Kawamotos manage to be happy in spite of their lack of wealth. Because even if they're poor, at least they're rich in heart.
Hope you have a happy Father's Day.

So I actually had a lot more notes that I didn't end up incorporating into the video, just gonna leave it here! Rei's teacher goes out of his way to eat lunch with him on the stairs, and Rei later mentions that he's been eating alone for 11 years. When we first see Rei walking home from the Kawamoto house in the second episode, he mentions that the leftovers felt warm against his body, like a small animal. Hina mentions that Akari likes to bring home strays and make them "soft and fluffy," essentially smothering them with food. She also remarks that she was surprised when she brought home a boy! Nikaidou's butler brings them sweets in appreciation of them hosting him. Hina doesn't have enough money (100 yen) to buy the new drink she wanted, so Rei buys it for her and then they run into Takahashi. Seeing empty bento boxes for New Years, Akari says she feels the need to fill them and gains a sense of achievement for doing so. Kiriyama shows up at a sick Shimada-san's house with groceries and cooks him a meal. Oh and how could I forget, Takahashi cooks them monja in the very last episode, and says he'll bring the tradition with him when he moves to share it with others. Hina reconciles with the other members of her class by doing what? Baking pastries. Etc etc etc. There's a ton of examples!

Sangatsu no lion is about everything. Seriously, I feel like wonderful analysis like this could be made over almost literally any topic when it comes to Sangatsu because this show is so perfect, and it makes me sad that this is so disgustingly, criminally, overlooked as a show. Your personal story fits so well with this theme in the show and is really heart warming/breaking. Thanks for the video :)

I gave $1000 to my dad with a note saying "Feliz dia del padre" later he came by my room ans ask if I typed a extra 0 by mistake, I said: Happy father's day and not I didn't, you can take it as a payment for the laptop (process to point at 8+ years old laptop)" pops:"but won't you any have money left after this?" me: "nope" Pops:"ok, thank you (chuckles)". Shortly after I was overhearing him talking to a roomate in the living room, based in the conversation I may have made my dad tear up a little.

I'd rather have this comment lost down here. I wanted to share it now Twitter, but nah... I'm currently preparing for my backlog exams (I failed in two subjects) and I didn't get any job in college placements, and my CV is mostly empty. My other batchmates have all but settled. My dad is doing everything he can, but he'll retire in about 2-3 years. We are not struggling or anything, but having not taken a position of responsibility even now, I can't be more ashamed. This is the reason why I was crying inside when I heard your story. Thank you for making this.

Beautiful analysis on the Kawamoto sisters. Through no fault of your own, the ending of this video made me cry, because I lost my dad 4 1/2 years ago. What I would give to wish him a happy father's day...

You're dad sounds awesome. Sadly, my dad and I, while we do love each other, are not as close. Your relationship with your dad is very similar to my relationship with my mom though. We also lived in similar living conditions growing up, but thankfully because of my grandparents and school, a lot of stress was taken off my mom. I think our lives would have been a lot harder if we didn't have a strong support system.

What a fantastic video. I've been on a Sangatsu spree for the past week. And it makes me very happy to see how everyone can share some kind of personal experience with this show - may it be the protagonist, the antagonist, the Kawamoto sisters and their family, or anyone in the supporting cast for that matter. This show gave some people the strength to live, some people the will to change, while some people the will to confess and express themselves. This community...this small family that has been created surrounding this underwatched show brings me to tears. I'm glad this show exists. I'm glad I found this at the perfect time in my life. I'm glad and grateful for the privileges I've had for me to be able to find other people who love this show just as much as I do or even more. Sangatsu no Lion was my very first life-changing experience, and I'm forever thankful to this show, its creator, and the people behind its production for bringing such a positive impact in my life.

I still love hearing this story abour your family, i was never in that bad of a position, but my family struggles financial, sadly due to my depression and more at uni i had to leave early with a big bill, its been a few years and it still haunts my anxieties with my parents pushing me more and more, but hearing what it could have gone gives me a sense of, i dont know how to describe it, pleasure, at ease? That someone else managed to have some light even if they didnt live luxuriously

Just because there's food on screen doesn't mean its about food. Sounds like you have a good dad tho :)
@senritsu4685
@senritsu4685 4 жыл бұрын
No, but the fact that the producers deliberately chose to put food on screen so many times in key moments mean the food is representing something, or, as this video suggests, that it is used for characters to convey emotions.

Wait, I gotta call you out on something. You cited some statistics about families that eat together but this doesn't prove that eating together causes these things. Often a family eating together is symptomatic of stability (economic or otherwise) rather than being the cause of that stability. I do think there's a huge importance for someone to have a sense of community though and the Kawamotos foster that feeling perfectly in their actions towards Rei. Also Hina is perfect
@Kamimashita
@Kamimashita 6 жыл бұрын
Hina *is* perfect~ So the study I cited and referenced in the description actually factored in economic stability, and was found to be correlated with meal sharing among advantaged as well as disadvantaged countries. Here is the OECD report for the truancy cited: www.oecd.org/pisa/pisaproducts/pisainfocus/PISA-in-Focus-n35-(eng)-FINAL.pdf You are correct however, that obviously the better relationship you have with your family the more likely you are to eat together and have stability in your home life. More data is needed :)
@zianitori1565
@zianitori1565 6 жыл бұрын
:D I only call stuff out like that because some people will look at data that shows, for example, married black people on average make way more money than unmarried black people and think the solution to the black community's issues is to tell them to get married rather than dealing with complex socioeconomic issues. XD Thanks for the reply!!

Can someone explain why it is "3-Gatsu"? Is it that in Japanese the months are just the number that represents the order that they come in during the year, followed by "gatsu"?
@Kamimashita
@Kamimashita 6 жыл бұрын
That is correct! Sangatsu is literally "the third month", or 三月, the characters for 3 and month. Your Lie in April is another example, the Japanese name being "Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso." Theoretically you could just shorten it to 4gatsu (and indeed some people do!).
